New Year's brings images of crowds, and songs, and fireworks; staying up til midnight and watching balls or bells being rung. But Luceti is a different time and place. Whether you're partying with friends or watching the sunrise, what are you doing today?

I think it's possible... Of course, not all worlds will be so accepting, and it'd be a massive process to go through... but the benefits would be astonishing.

Exactly. We have to keep our minds open. Even I've seen some things that I'd never have imagined before coming here.

[Which really proves the weirdness of Luceti if things are weird by Mulder-standards.]

Critical thinking is important, but... at the same time, when magic is... objectively observable, it becomes... part of the accepted criteria for an explanation...

[... In other words, Robert isn't entirely open-minded - but he's not going to discount the paranormal out of hand anymore. Not in Luceti, at least.]

[Ah, so much like Scully in the skepticism.]

That's a step in the right direction, though... even if it takes proof to believe in it, at least you're accepting the proof for what it is and not trying to explain it away as something else...

[Indeed. Scully and Robert would probably get along at this point...]

Well... from what you have told me about your world, it is... h-hard to understand...

... Possibly, if there were no "cover-ups", people would be... more likely to believe the prosaic explanations.

Maybe. But I can't imagine a world without its share of cover-ups from the people holding power. It was the way of things back home, and now here, sometimes... sometimes it's almost like I never left. Aside from the wings, of course.

[Not that he likes it being that way, at all.]

[That's... discouraging, in all honesty. Robert shakes his head slowly, eyes sliding down to study his hands.]

... Is it... really that difficult...? For you at home, I mean...

It really is. I've been doing all I can to expose it, but it's not entirely so simple. The more I poke into things, the more they'll cover it up and take steps to avoid getting caught. At least I've made some progress with it...

[More than here, but he'd been at it a few years already back home.]

What... sort of progress, if I may ask...? [It seems exciting and yet dangerous; the kind of thing Robert is ashamed to admit he would have stepped away from in fear.]

I've uncovered a great deal- actually I've learned something that's pretty damn major, not long before I came here... The truth about the extraterrestrials, their plans to take over and colonize the earth by infecting the human race with an alien virus. I know now that the conspiracy has been developing a vaccine, that the reason they took my sister was because of this whole thing, that they took my partner so they could run related tests... and this conspiracy is world-wide, I've been to another country where they were experimenting with this same alien substance...

The people involved in this cover-up have too much power, is the problem. I can only do so much to fight them as things are right now, but I'm never giving up.

[Robert listens quietly - he's come to realize that even if what Mulder says sounds insane, he's generally being completely serious.

And the idea of someone taking other people against their will to make vaccines...]

... It... seems atrocious, that such a huge c-conspiracy could... exist, without anyone doing anything to stop it...

... [And yet...] ... Did the vaccine... show any promise, though? Do you think... it c-could help...?

... Not that this is an... a-acceptable way to develop it...

It'll never be acceptable, and the ends will never justify the means, even if... it was. Successful, I mean. It's a long story involving a bee sting and trudging through a hell of a lot of snow, but anyway... Scully was infected with it, and I had to administer it to her. She survived and recovered, so I know it works...

I am g-glad she was alright... [Still, Robert has to wonder.]

... Projects like that s-seem... so difficult to hide from a populace. Especially a populace with... s-some knowledge...

... Still. Perhaps there would be... l-less reprehensible ways to... d-develop it. Ways that were... public...

Exactly, they could develop it in an ethical way, I'm sure of it. If they could do away with all of the secrecy, and stop kidnapping and experimenting on people against their will... The general population has a right to know the truth, about extraterrestrial life, about everything...

The truth... [Do Terrans have that right, to know the truth? To know their world is flawed?

Or maybe they have that right and just took it from themselves on purpose.]

... I... I think it should... h-happen one day. If... if only to change how your world... approaches its reality...

[And that in turn could apply to Terra, as much as it worries Robert to think that way.]

It's important for people to know what's really happening out there. Secrecy and lies don't help anyone, just the people using them to keep themselves in power.

I'll keep doing all I can to make the truth known in my world.
