Katara and her boyfriend, Bumi's ward Masaomi, are heading back to the house after Katara had an experience that left her shaken with an Avatar that doesn't remember her. Sokka and his good friend Winry from Omashu are moving her back into the Avatar House after her belongings had mysteriously vanished. What could possibly go wrong?

[Masaomi you conniving son of a skunk bear. Don't act like this is no big deal! His frustration grows visibly that not only is Masaomi playing this off as no big deal, but Katara is trying to play innocent.]

Yeah? I don't know how you missed it, but Winry wasn't here this morning. They dropped all her stuff off at the Hughes place.

[generalflirt]

[Winry. That's Sokka's coworker at the Smithy... the oddly gold-haired girl? She was cute, but she was never living here. So that confirms Sokka is different. Sigh. He hopes this isn't going to be too troublesome, in Shikamaru's words. He gives Katara's hand a little squeeze, but lets her handle answering that]

...Sokka. Winry's never lived here.

[Please don't let them have fallen in love or something like that.]

There's an experiment - haven't you seen Aang?

[Wow, that kind of hurt just to say.]

[markofthewise]

[... and just like that, it all made sense. No wonder Katara and Masaomi are holding hands. They've been affected. He groans.]

Winry's been living here longer than you have, Katara. And yes, I realize there's an experiment? See the moving? We're moving. And I already talked with Aang. He's off in superhero mode. [Annoying, but harmless for a first experiment. He'll be fine.]

[generalflirt]

[Before Katara can respond to that - because spirits know he can sense how she was reacting when she said what was up with Aang - Masaomi decides to speak up]

I don't remember Winry ever living here either, Sokka. [a beat] Not that I'd stop you from moving her in, of course. You have the space, after all.

[markofthewise]

[Glare.]

I don't think you'd be stopping me from anything, Masaomi. What are you even doing here? It better not be claiming to live here.

[markofthebrave]

[Okay, no. No talking to her boyfriend like that.

...but then again, he was obviously shifted so - firm concern.]

He's here because I wanted him to walk me home. [She leans forward a little.] What's the matter, Sokka? Don't you remember him?

[markofthewise]

Yeah. I remember him. Unfortunately. The only problem is, the Malnosso apparently have you remembering him wrong.

[generalflirt]

[He was prepared to make a calm reply before Katara stepped in, but when Sokka says unfortunately, his suspicions since that glare are confirmed. Sokka remembers things different - well that was obvious from the moment they walked in. But...

This Sokka isn't my friend.

That realization hits him with an absolutely crushing force. He feels like he was sucker punched by that one and his eyes widen just a bit. His grip on Katara's hand tightens, but not so much in a supportive way as... he's bracing himself on her. He knows it's probably going to be hurtful to her that her brother is different on top of their Avatar, but right now he feels cold that where he was expecting sarcastic commentary ultimately good natured in origin, he instead is confronted with obvious animosity.

None of it shows on his face beyond his eyes widening though. His spine straightens, but he works hard to keep a neutral expression]

No. [Strong confidence.] I know exactly who he is. You don't even remember meeting him in Omashu?

[They'd BOTH wanted to punch Masaomi out at that point.]

No. That's where we met Winry. And- wait, why are you talking about meeting him in Omashu? He's from Earth! Japan or something!

[markofthebrave]

...we met Winry in Luceti. [She doesn't let go of Masaomi's hand, she's almost afraid to, afraid that he'd disappear, though she wants to approach Sokka.]

I don't know what you're talking about. Masaomi's Bumi's ward, remember? We met him when Bumi was putting Aang through those trials.

[markofthewise]

Bumi? With a ward? [He rests his hand on his forehead. Not quite facepalming. Yet.] You need to take a step back and think about how ridiculous that is. Why would Bumi adopt someone, much less Masaomi?

[Why would Bumi adopt someone, much less Masaomi?

Something that, in his youth, Masaomi had actually reflected on a lot. He recalls the story of course (that they found a baby under the king's bed in the morning one day during cleaning) but the actual reasoning for his King (father, really) taking him in tended to elude him until he finally asked in his teen years to be greated with an answer which was superficially "why not" but on a deeper level knew it had something to do with a destiny he had yet to see.

Masaomi keeps up the poker face as best he can, but hearing Sokka voice this is frustrating. He considers speaking up at that one but. If Sokka isn't even hearing Katara he's not going to hear him. At least not at this moment. Wait for the right one.]

[That sets her off. How dare Sokka poke at those issues?

Much less Masaomi? How dare you.

She leans forward, refusing to let go of his hand.]

I understand that you're in some kind of weird experiment right now, Sokka, and that's the only reason I'm going to forget you said that. You've got no right to talk down to him when both he and I think that Winry moving in here is equally as weird. We'll talk about this calmly and with some basic common courtesy, or we're leaving.

[markofthewise]

Why does everyone assume I'm under the experiment! Of course, why not? I just forgot that Hiccup is a Pokemon trainer, that Fenimore is an expert in firearms, that Aang is Batman's sidekick, and that now apparently Masaomi is dating you. Fine, whatever. We'll talk. But I'm going to finish helping Winry first.

[Because he's pretty steamed off himself. Not so much as Katara and not even so much at Masaomi. But that the Malnosso bastards would force the two of them together like that.]

[generalflirt]

[And there's the moment. He speaks up now, putting his face into more a relaxed sort of mode, squeezes Katara's hand and then worms out of it to step forward]

Ah, wait a minute, Sokka. You two should probably talk. [Because Katara is going to be upset if you don't] -If you don't have a problem with it, I could help Winry finish up.

[markofthewise]

[On one hand, he doesn't like the idea of Masaomi being with Winry like that. But this version of him is one Katara trusts, right? And it's just in the next room. He was hoping to put off talking, but with the offer there, he doesn't really have much choice. So he sighs.]

Fine. Go and help. Just try and remember she's taken.

[markofthebrave]

[Sokka, the two of them are standing there holding hands. Just how much more insulting can you be? As if Masaomi would even think about cheating on her.

--wait.]

Taken by who? You don't think that the two of you are together, do you?

[NOT AGAIN.]

[markofthewise]

[Sokka just stares at her.]

What? No! I'm with Suki. [That's how you know he's the sane one.]

[generalflirt]

[...Hah. No, no, keep the temper in. It's easy, really, he's worked on restraining himself to be polite and diplomatic for most of his life. He can't quite force a smile at the implication he would ever cheat on Katara (just what does he remember?) but he can waves a bit as he heads off to the other room.

...At least Sokka's with Suki. It would be a shame for he to be upset too]

Don't worry, you trust me.

[You're supposed to anyway. Okay, so it's a pot shot, that wording, but his mood is a bit too foul.

/And thus Masaomi was out of this conversation to go meet Winry (which I'll make a new thread for I think)]

[Said under his breath. Not loud enough for Masaomi to catch on, but Katara might catch it.]

Katara jerks her head to the side and starts walking away from what's apparently now going to be Winry's room.]

All right. Let's hear it.

[markofthewise]

[He follows, equally unhappy about any of this. He crosses his arms, looking just about as displeased. So he just goes right into it. Bluntly and direct. He manages to, at least, keep his voice low so Masaomi doesn't hear him.]

I know you automatically think I'm wrong and that you're going to tell me how it really is. But you know what? The Masaomi I know isn't from Omashu. He never met Bumi. And he's definitely not your boyfriend. He's from Japan. He's a crazy guy who can barely focus on what he's doing, flirts with any girl he comes across, and has spent who knows how long trying to wear you down just so he has a shot at you. Which now, thanks to the Malnosso, he's apparently got. And I know that you'll agree with me once you're back to normal.
