"And through the rise and falling apart"
Who: Aang and Katara
What: A much needed conversation
When: April 16th
Where: House 56 -> THE OCEAN
Summary: ...soooo there are some things they need to straighten out
Rating: G for 'this should be good?'
[Time is the sweetest balm. It's been... nearly a week now, and Katara's starting to feel much more like herself. And as such... she really wants to not have to talk to Aang about That Night, or about what he called her when he first arrived, or about any sort of heart-manipulating experiments and their results, or about Masaomi...
She really doesn't want to have to talk to him about that. She just wants things to stay as they are, while he's here - happy and content, as best as possible. But... he remembers things differently. Or - he remembers things that haven't happened yet. And if she doesn't share of some things that have happened to her, and if she attempts to brush over the things he's told her, and what she's learned, then... then they're living a lie just as foul as one of the experiments. And she refuses to do that.
So after dinner, and after an abbreviated time of practice, Katara knocks on Aang's bedroom door.]

Aang?

We're ourselves now. That's good.
no subject
[Okay, so... dead end. Now how was she going to bring up what she needed to bring up?]
no subject
I missed hanging out like this. Just me and you.
no subject
Aaaaaaaaand, she chickens out.]
We've had plenty of time together since you've shown up.
[You know. With everyone.]
Although I was thinking of cutting back on some of my clinic hours...
[Yes, let's make this about how busy she is.]
no subject
no subject
Okay, be brave, Katara. Isn't this what you needed to talk to him about? Try and find a way.]
...actually, one of the things that being 'her' showed me was that maybe Sokka and Masaomi were right and my schedule might be a little too packed. I've made a lot of progress in my medical studies already, so I might be able to ease back a little.
no subject
That's... if you think that's best. [He struggled to try to get the next words out.] Do you... do you... remember things? From being... the other you?
no subject
...I remember a lot of things. Don't you? Things that actually happened last week more than her other world, but... I remember.
[I remember, Aang.]
no subject
You know what I said.
1/3
I... I know what you said.
no subject
You can do this.]
no subject
Aang, I don't know what to say back. I don't want you to have to lie to me - and I don't know what happened between us that you remember, but - I'm not the same Katara that you knew. That you remember.
[I've done things...]
You're the most important person to the world to me, but right now-- I'm scared. You're saying - [she can't even say it] - but I feel like we're just getting to know each other again. So much has happened...
[She trails off, shaking her head, not sure if she can keep going when she feels like what she's saying could be hurting him with each word.]
[1/2]
But this is you, Katara. The real you. We just... we just confirmed that!
no subject
I just don't know... there's nothing in the Avatar handbook about dealing with people a year in your past. When things were so different. You're from a time that... not long after that, things started to... change. I thought I should act like you remembered me. But... if anyone has a right to know the truth, it's you. I'll tell you whatever you want, Katara.
no subject
"I don't expect it."]
...I can't tell you how much I appreciate you giving me a chance to get used to you being here before... letting me know about this. And I hope that some time of getting to know me here will have helped you too...
[She looks down again, her brow furrowing.]
I guess... I don't want to know. Because I don't want to hurt you. But it isn't fair for you to carry this by yourself, so...
[She needs to hear him say it, because if she doesn't, she can talk herself out of it. She can pretend it's not happening.]
Were we... together?
no subject
Yes. [He pauses a bit and continues.] We... we became sweeties after the war ended. ...We still are, back home.
1/?
[That's exhaled slowly, as her eyes widen with... something. Fear? Anger? Confusion, maybe. Or hurt.
The world is suddenly slanted.
Aang is her future.
Does she even have a choice anymore?]
no subject
What you want and what you feel isn't important right now. Aang is. What can she do, what can she say to make this better?
She swallows hard.]
Aang, I'm - I'm sorry that I'm not the Katara you remember. I never thought - I never thought you felt this way about me, not until you came now. I'm--
no subject
done!
[He loves her? Like that? And they're together?
He was older now, but... it was still hard to see him as much more than a child.
Then again... she remembers him whispering in her ear, the more distant memories of a dance...
She takes a breath here, not because she doesn't have more to say - she does - but in the event he wants to jump in here, it's a substantial pause.]
no subject
I understand.
no subject
[Her brow is crinkled with concern and worry, and she searches his eyes in the moonlight.]
no subject
I don't know, Katara. I've kind of... always felt something for you. Something that only grew with everything we went through together. And... I thought you felt something like that. Like at the Cave of Two Lovers. And that time we danced at that other cave. Maybe it wasn't that strong, but I thought it was growing too. Now I'm not sure when you did start having... feelings... like that.
[He swallows his heart before saying the next part.]
But I understand that with all the time we've been apart since you were brought here... any feelings could have become... [he tried to find the right words] like a plant without water. And I don't blame you for that, or any of this.
no subject
And horribly worse at the same time. Because this was Aang and he felt this way... and... Masaomi felt this way and she...
She just felt weak and impossibly unworthy. For a moment, her strength fails her an she sits down abruptly on the sand.]
...I'm so sorry, Aang.
[There's more to say, somehow. If she could just get it past the weight that was her heart.]
no subject
Don't be. We still know each other. We're still friends. Even in this horrible place. I was able to beat the Fire Lord. So I... [his eyes glisten] I can live with this.
