[What's a knight TREASURE HUNTER supposed to do around here? Bandits running about, thieves striking about every corner but where's the fun in that? There's no treasure involved. Ugh.

In any case, she's heading out of the restaurant when she's beckoned.]

I'm not running a lost-and-found, lady.

Of course I don't expect service for free. If you can help me out, I'm sure I can manage to reward you. Would you be so kind?

I suppose I could hear you out. [She'll switch directions and come over to the booth that she's in but she won't take a seat. Not yet, at least.] Tell me more.

You see, these items are quite dear to me. One day a troublemaker took them from me and scattered them to distant lands. It is not within my own power to retrieve them myself. But I am certainly willing to repay any kind person who would find them in my place.

[Nod, nod, and she leans forward.]

And just how distant are we talking about here?

As close as in a creatures' den south of the lake, to as far as in a cavern by the structure on the shore which lies on the other side of the mountain pass.

[ Which happens to have a teleporter nearby it, so really it's actually easier to reach than the den. Convenient, that. ]

[Sure she knows those places. But that first one-- she'd heard about it. The stories, the gory details, who hadn't? Every treasure hunter worth their salt had.]

The Cave of the Man-Eating Creatures? Isn't it all sealed up?

The seal cracked with the most recent earthquake. The passage isn't much wider than a human, so beasts only rarely escape, and often they are still young and weak. Most villagers think it still closed. After all if nothing frightening comes out, why would they worry? Even an unskilled mercenary can defeat those few that make it this far.

The creatures still trapped inside are another story.

And yet you're sending anyone [greedy] willing enough into there alone. That's a suicide mission, lady.

[Not that that's a no, just...]

Well then, let's see the colour of your "reward" first.

It need not be alone if you don't wish.

Ah, how do you defend yourself? I used to make my living fixing up weapons and equipment during my travels.

[feelinghot]

[Unsheathing her weapon in the middle of a restaurant would be sacrilege, so she'll just point to the huge...axe strapped to her back. That should be indication enough.]

[ There's several seconds as she looks over the weapon. ]

I see. Though not my usual fare I am quite certain I could provide you with a better one, should you help me. Less weight and sharper while still being sturdy.

[feelinghot]

[Common sense would dictate that she ask for proof of this mysterious lady's skills. And maybe ask for some form of deposit so she doesn't get cheated out of this deal.

And so she opens her mouth—]

You've got yourself a deal.

[The experiment, as it appears, has other plans.]

[ But of course! She's a Quest NPC, they never go back on their words! Well, once the quest is over, at least. No telling how many hoops you need to jump through to finish. ]

The items I wish to recover are known as Dark Shards. For they are stones which shine black even in the brightest sunlight.

You have my gratitude.

Sounds easy enough to recognise. [She half-turns to go— and stops.] They aren't dangerous or anything, are they?

[first_darkness]

[ That gets a laugh in response. ] For humans? Only if they're pure of heart.

[feelinghot]

[Ha ha ha....!]

Guess I won't have to worry about that.

[And you know, no talk of what else to do with stuff she might find in the caves like-- the other treasures? She's gonna take that as a "take whatever you want as long as long as it's not that", no questions asked.

So yes, about turn then, and adventuring she goes...!]

[ Go ahead! Other treasures are all hers. As long as she delivers the Dark Shard.

... Which, of course, is in one of the deepest parts of the cave, on a glowing white pedestal, with a mysterious column of light surrounding it.

Nothing suspicious to see here. ]

[She's already pocketed things like a Cape (+1 DEF), Round Badge (+2 DEF against Wind attacks) and an Odd Potion (unlabelled, chance of causing odd statuses). So far, boring.

Except when she runs into monsters, that is. Her MO thus far has been to keep away from monsters and try not to engage in too many fights-- she is alone, after all, and getting mobbed is never a good thing. So she'll just snoop round corners, open treasure chests, jump over nasty things that could reduce HP and scuttle down a slope to...

...oh hey, that's it, isn't it?

The last of the pebbles roll as she stops with a low whistle and dusts herself off.]

Is that the one now...

[ It is! As is probably evidenced by the fact that the moment she gets close to it, a new monster appears from nearby, snarling at her. It's markedly different from the rest of the creatures thus far: it has a slightly different build, and two stripes running from the top of its head down to the tip of its tail which glow whenever it moves.

Also it's rather large. And it does not want to let her at the Dark Shard. ]

[Okay, maybe expecting things to be straightforward was silly. Of course there's going to be security-- of course.

Her axe is far too heavy to swing around all willy-nilly in an enclosed space so she's kept it strapped to her back, making do with a spare dagger in hand. But this one didn't look like a dagger prick would get it out of the way (not that it would for the others either, but they were usually looking the other way) so maybe it was time to change tactics.

De-equip > Star dagger (+3 SPD)
Equip > Two-handed cherry axe (+5 STR, -2 SPD, -1 SKL)

For now, she'll just circle the perimeter, watching. Is this monster aggressive? Will it charge at her?

...is there anyway of not engaging in battle with it?]

[ It won't fight unless she gets within a certain distance of the Shard, but it's the boss battle. Sneaking around it and reaching the Shard is not exactly happening.

But that does mean it stops attacking and goes back to only eying her warily if she moves a reasonable distance away, so plenty easy enough to stop and regain stamina if necessary. It's the first one of the quest, after all. It's strong but not particularly vicious. ]

[Oh damn it, why couldn't it just move out of the way.

She circles the perimeter a little longer, making note of where the "safe" boundary supposedly starts, and stops. And stares this guardian straight in the face.]

This'd better be for a good reason.

[AND LAUNCHES HERSELF AT IT, GOING FOR AN UPPER SLASH.]

[ Because that would be easy!

When she moves forwards, it jumps forwards as well. The slash catches it and it stumbles backwards, yowling. It's stunned for only a moment, then it regains its bearings and charges, fangs bared. ]
