Well, in sci-fi movies I've seen back home, usually battles happen with the spaceships firing lasers at each other. So I'm going to try piloting one of the Tyr-Fighters.

[She supposes she could just stay behind on the ship or on groundbound battle in general, but...she really does want to try it out. Who knew if she'd get an opportunity like this again. And hey, even if she died, she'd still come back. (...right?)]

You can fly one of those things? Wow... that's really amazing. I was looking at them, but there's no way I'd be able to use one. I think I'd just end up crashing it instead.

Someone from Luceti set up a simulation for them in the Battle Dome before we left, so that's where I learned. It wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be, but...I think flying the real thing might be different. [Hopefully not too different.]

A simulation? I guess it might be easier if you thought of it as playing a video game or something...

[Nod.] Yeah, I've played video games similar to what was on the simulator! So it wasn't so bad there. [She lays a hand on the windowpane.] I don't know how it'll be when I'm out there, though. I mean, I barely know how to drive a car back home! And now I'm flying a plane in a fight.

Yeah! I don't have my license yet though. I've just been practicing in the Battle Dome, that's all. [Distantly, it occurs to her then that she'd be eligible for an official driving permit back home now, since she's 16. Surreal.] ...do they have cars back in your world?

[Emil just shakes his head, still looking amazed.]

No, the closest thing we have is carriages, and those aren't that much like cars at all. They don't move by themselves the way cars do.

[Well, Pao-Lin would probably think Emil's world was pretty cool if he told her more about it.]

Nope, you need like horses to move them. They had those a long time ago in my world. So your world will probably get them eventually!

You really think so? But that will probably take a lot more technology than we have right now... I wonder how long it will take for people to invent it.

Good question...I think there were horses and carriages in my world for a couple of centuries before they came up with the first cars. [She simpers.] So maybe you might not get to see a car in your life back in your world...

Oh...

[That's... really disappointing. But then again, if he's a summon spirit...]

But at least you're here now to enjoy those things, right? [She tries to smile reassuringly.] Maybe you might not remember them when you're sent back home, but...the memories might still live on in your heart. [Wow, Pao-Lin, that was so cheesy you could have breaded and deep-fried it and now I've just made myself hungry.]

Right! And now if Doctor McCoy ever comes back, I can tell him that I got to go on a spaceship! I bet he'll be sad that he missed it.

Oh, he's already been to space. That's how I found out about spaceships in the first place. He said he'd take me if I ever got to visit his world, but now I've beaten him to it.

Oh, I see! Does he come from a world where there's lots of space travel, then?

Yeah. Um, well, I don't know if everyone can do it, but the way he was talking about it made it sound like it happens a lot there.

That sounds really exciting. I'd love to be able to visit other worlds like that.

Me too. Then we could all go visit each other whenever we wanted. It would be like we hadn't left Luceti at all.

Yeah! But...that'd only be true if all our worlds were in the same, um, universe.
