Who: Anyone who wants to come!
What: BEACH PARTY! (For Katara or something)
When: In the evening, about 7PM
Where: On the beach! Somewhere!
Summary: It's Katara's 17th and while all friends of Team Avatar are invited, anyone else can gatecrash too.
Rating: E for everyone (for God's sake there's going to be seven year olds!)

[A few days before the birthday, Katara's housemates began birthday preparations. Not quite entirely secret, but they made invitations, told friends, spread the word, and so on. Birthday on the beach. Be there or be a loser McButtface without friends.

And so there's a party! With tables! And chairs! And umbrellas! And the sun is setting, but the Malnosso had no taste and put the ocean on the east side of Luceti, so it's a sunset over the mountains which isn't as cool as an ocean sunset. But anyway. There's a volleyball net and, you know, an ocean to swim in. Also Sokka ordered a generator with his mission points and abducted the karaoke machine. It was mostly to provide some music, but people can get up and sing with it too.

As for the food? There's a table for that. It's a bring your own dish affair, since Katara is kind of their team cook and they can't exactly make her own birthday meal, right? So anyone coming can bring whatever they like and set it out. The gang brought some meals of their own, so there's bound to be some cool dishes from the air nomads, water tribe, and fire nation. And cake. A big chocolate cake. Someone made it! We don't know who. (Feel free to dibs being the baker or something if you want.)

And a table! A table for presents! Bring a present, set it there. It's very organized.]

((ooc: It's out on the beach and just a general sort of party affair, so feel free to have characters show up even if they're not friends with the birthday girl. It's a free for all. SO YOU BETTER MINGLE OR THERE'S GONNA BE WORDS.

[He finds that a little funny; for once, he ignores a chance to drop the "114" bomb.]

Oh, that's great!

Yeeep, any day now I'll be man enough to lift people up and spin them around, all that magic and strength. [He rocks back on his heel, looking for- ...Oh she's eating the grilled eel over there (Linda that is) fair enough. He focuses back on Aang]

Sounds like some good people-bending practice. [He follows Masaomi's look.] Looks like Linda the Pikachu's doing well too.

A~ah. That she does! I'm glad to see Katara in high spirits too, given the circumstances.

[He finds that wording somewhat odd - but assumes he's mostly referring to the draftimes.]

I know, I'm really glad that she's having a great time. She deserves it. It helps to have had such a great turnout. Ikki alone makes everything so much more fun.

[He agrees with the first part. He almost, almost just agrees with Aang. then there's the second part. And a switch flips in his head]

Ah, I'm sure Ikki-chan does just that! It relaxes Katara to a point of total contentedness!

[He says this blithely, with a broad smile and a thumbs up from his good hand]

[Aang's eyebrow raises slightly; he's not sure if he misheard a pronoun there.]

She makes a little more excitement than relaxation, but it's still positive. I just know there's been a lot more smiles around the house. [Especially considering the last few weeks.] And it sounds like you had a good time talking to her too. You got her thinking you're a secret agent!

Yes! Lots and lots of smiles! Excited smiles which are filled with genuine appreciation! It's a great source of perfect bliss to your household to have such a charming young girl around, I'm sure!

[And he laughs obnoxiously here, waving a finger in the air]

[Something's up, although Aang's not exactly self-aware enough to recognize that he acts similarly when he's nervous about something.]

It's bad that she's here to begin with, of course, but we love her already. It's definitely a new experience.

Yep, yep, a happy family! [More obnoxious laughing. And he waves his hand a moment, but when it's back down at his side despite his broad smile and slouched shoulders, it's balled into a fist] One with no problems, right?! No chance of that!

[Now he's starting to get the sense that something's bothering him.]

I mean, there are still problems. Nothing... nothing's perfect.

Really, really?! Could it be Sokka-kun is dragging you down with this heartbreak of romance?! Or maybe Zuko-san is making it just a bit awkward, possibly even the venerable Uncle Roku-san?! Because it seems to me, Aang-bozu, you've been describing some real domestic bliss so far, right?!

[The fist breaks. His whole body is tense though, despite the relaxed smile. The smile in no way reaches his eyes though as he goes to give his hand an easy wave]

[Aang shudders at the mention of Roku and Zuko because it cuts cleanly to a fear he hadn't acknowledged to anyone. As much as he's come to trust both of them, he still feels a creeping fear whenever they're around Ikki. First he looks down at the sand and speaks weakly.]

It-it doesn't make our problems go away. But she makes us all feel better after everything we went through. [Pause. He meets Masaomi's eyes and speaks more sternly.] Something's wrong.

[Oh, now you notice? His face flattens. He keeps his gaze fixated right on Aang's eyes and then says this in a flat, even tone]

Yeah, you are.

[Slight pause.]

Me?

Yes, you. [A beat] I can't even begin to pretend I know your circumstances, but if you continue to pretend that having a seven year old she's going to feel responsible for is going to help Katara's mood at all I'll hit you.

[He flinches at the sudden threat. This side of Masaomi is... definitely new to him.]

I told you it's not all good. But I'm not going to just list any problems any of us have to anyone at her birthday party!

[He exhales sharply through his nose. Aang's right, it is a birthday. Even if his flippant attitude is pissing him off, this is a day when people lie and pretend everything's okay]

[And so he screws up a polite smile onto his face]

Eeeeh, even you have problems? I guess that's a bit of a surprise to me. Not! That we will discuss them today.

[And now he's going to turn on his heel to head to the food table to get Linda. Aang can follow if he wants]

[Aang's left with some emotional whiplash that leaves him rooted to his seat. He wasn't ready to just run after him and joke around like nothing just happened, and he was nowhere near starting a fight. If Katara wanted Masaomi to know any of her problems, she would tell them herself. He wasn't going to deprive her of any more choices.

He was left wondering what kind of person Masaomi really was, and whether or not Katara had ever seen that other side. But he remembered it was Katara's birthday. So he scrolled through the music machine selections for some happy music.]
