Beach Party!?

Who: Anyone who wants to come!
What: BEACH PARTY! (For Katara or something)
When: In the evening, about 7PM
Where: On the beach! Somewhere!
Summary: It's Katara's 17th and while all friends of Team Avatar are invited, anyone else can gatecrash too.
Rating: E for everyone (for God's sake there's going to be seven year olds!)

[A few days before the birthday, Katara's housemates began birthday preparations. Not quite entirely secret, but they made invitations, told friends, spread the word, and so on. Birthday on the beach. Be there or be a loser McButtface without friends.

And so there's a party! With tables! And chairs! And umbrellas! And the sun is setting, but the Malnosso had no taste and put the ocean on the east side of Luceti, so it's a sunset over the mountains which isn't as cool as an ocean sunset. But anyway. There's a volleyball net and, you know, an ocean to swim in. Also Sokka ordered a generator with his mission points and abducted the karaoke machine. It was mostly to provide some music, but people can get up and sing with it too.

As for the food? There's a table for that. It's a bring your own dish affair, since Katara is kind of their team cook and they can't exactly make her own birthday meal, right? So anyone coming can bring whatever they like and set it out. The gang brought some meals of their own, so there's bound to be some cool dishes from the air nomads, water tribe, and fire nation. And cake. A big chocolate cake. Someone made it! We don't know who. (Feel free to dibs being the baker or something if you want.)

And a table! A table for presents! Bring a present, set it there. It's very organized.]

((ooc: It's out on the beach and just a general sort of party affair, so feel free to have characters show up even if they're not friends with the birthday girl. It's a free for all. SO YOU BETTER MINGLE OR THERE'S GONNA BE WORDS.

I know the story, Toph-chan. In another life, I even lived it.

[A version of it. A falsified one. He chuckles at that... this fierce defensiveness... who knows, he does understand it. He gets this way about Katara

That's the whole point]

[...Wait, what?]

What do you mean? [He's not lying. Was it that...] ...Oh. I heard about that experiment while I was gone.

Yep. [He laughs, waving a hand in front of him before he crouches down to be sort of frog-legged to the ground, smiling] Once upon a time, and a land that might not have existed, there was a prince in the city of Omashu. The ward of King Bumi, he was named Masaomi - that man, a better man than me, would go on to become the Earth King after the former one's incompetence saw him dead.

[he laughs some more, but it's mirthless] It's a farfetched story, don't you think?

You, the Earth King? [She does snort, but she doesn't burst out laughing as he might expect.] Hey, I doubt you could do much worse than the last one. That guy didn't even know what was going on in his kingdom most of his rule.

Ah, was that it? My memories of that are shakey. I just know that princess, Azula, killed him.

[Despite saying that, he's smiling. It's not his life. Maybe he's just broken]

I don't think he was yet though... he remembered being told he would be by "his" Sokka.

[She doesn't like it--not his story, necessarily, but the fact that something the Malnosso did could rewrite so much of some version of their story. She knew exactly how things had happened...and now she knew how they would end.]

So, you know what Aang did then. So why would you think he's willfully ignorant?

[Know what Aang did? I don't understand it at all. The Prince of Omashu loved him, but for what? Was that boyish charm really that necessary in a world like that? It's one where victory would have come regardless, because there are so many paragons of justice. In that sense, he's just a vessel.

He frowns to himself and sighs]

I don't think it matters what I think, Toph-chan. Not everyone is going to worship Aang-kun. Or, perhaps, am I evil for not doing so?

I don't worship him. [Not the way Katara does...she almost regrets thinking it.] Believing in him is something different. He's the only one who could do anything about it. You get that, don't you? The only bender who could have peaceably defeated Fire Lord Ozai without causing even more war. And he didn't even have to give up his only values to do it. Anyone else would have killed him. But Aang didn't.

[It was just as Iroh had said. If he himself had tried to fight Ozai, the world would have only seen it as more senseless violence. Violence leading to even more violence. But when it's the Avatar...]

Yeah, yeah, I get it. He's a big hero.

[Which is honest. But there's a darker part of him which can't help but not get it at all. Some people are just born special, he guesses]

[She's not sure that he does. Not really.]

But he's just a regular kid like the rest of us, too.

Yeah, just like the rest of you. [That's a lie. Laughing]

[She huffs a sigh.]

So, you don't want to give him credit for saving the world. Whatever. You think he's a bad match for Katara, too?

Objectively? Not really. If anything, if people got what they deserved, her and him would be having a Perfect Romance which would be making everyone else sick.

[A beat]

But, Toph-chan, do you see where the problems here are?

Of course I do. [She's been there and back again. She knows the Aang and Katara who are together, and she knows the Aang and Katara here. In fact, she's the only one who could look at it that way--Aang, even if he was from the same time from her, was too close to the matter at hand. Not that she isn't still biased, but she knows the facts.]

They've changed. Especially Katara. They've gone through things they never had to back home. That's what this place does, after all. Changes people.

[Masaomi isn't the same person he was when Toph met him, either.]

Again with the blaming a place. Every single one of you, every single time. Places don't change people, people can only change themselves. However Katara has changed,it's from the choices she's made in the circumstances presented to her. Putting it on the shoulders of a "place" is just insulting.

[She snaps right back, lips turned down.]

Exactly. The circumstances. Circumstances no one would be facing if we weren't here. It's the whole fact that we're here that we're different than we are back home.

Choices still change a person, Toph-chan. Or is your "fate" so set in stone?

[Coldly. Defensively, really]

Either way, you're proving my point.

[Her voice takes an odd tone.]

It is. When I go back, I'll become exactly the person Ikki says I do.

[But before he can respond, her next question is rolling out of her mouth.]

What is your point?

[Heh. His lips quirk up into a smirk] I guess I don't have one, riight? It's pointless.

[Nuh-uh, not taking that for an answer.] No, you do have a point. So make it.

Nope. [He glances back to Linda, and then stands properly, taking a step backwards with a wry grin] It's pointless before "fate" after all. That's the beauty of it, right?

It's not pointless. There's still a point to making our own choices even if we know how things are going to work out. That's how we get there.

Aaaah, nope, nope. The ones I'm referring to are meaningless. Just as "I" am meaningless to "you." In truth, the only ones who matter to "you" are those comrades you live with.

[He waves, going to just. Start to walk away now]

[She doesn't follow, but she does shout after him.]

I came out here to talk to you, didn't I?

And it's been a pointless conversation! I thank you, as a pointless person!

[He called back, without turning. Laughing.

...He's really pissed still, but no one with working eyes would think it]
