So... meanwhile, back at the ranch, there were opportunities for those who have caught their journals to know who's coming, and those who have not caught their journals to be taken by surprise at the new Water Tribe member in the house.

[Korra's just crushing the soda can in her hand now as she tosses it away.]

Yes, of course Sifu Katar- Oh, wait, I- [Awkward.]

[Katara manages a smile.]

Don't worry about it. At least you didn't call me GranGran.

[But she follows the course of that can in her living room with her eyes as well.]

[...Right. That's probably super strange for her. Korra scratches the back of her head awkwardly.]

So, where to?

Just out. [It's getting a little crowded in here.] We could head up to the river.

[She starts walking towards the door.]

[Korra follows.]

A river? Sounds nice. [At least that means space.]

It's not far.

[Katara opens the door and out they go! She glances back inside her very crowded house and shuts the door quickly behind them before one of the grandkids can see.

She gives Korra a small, conspiratorial smile.]

Come on, quick.

[And she starts sprinting to the road.

No one kill anyone in there while we're gone, please.]

[Hey, not so fast! She quickly takes off as soon as she realizes what Katara is doing. Korra doesn't hesitate or spare a glance over her shoulder. She's leaving that behind right now. Right now is the earth beneath her feat, the fire in her heart, and the liquid flowing through her veins. A smile, the biggest and most heartfelt one she's worn yet, spreads across her face.

Yes.]

[Well, Katara was planning on stopping when they reached the path.

But one glance over her shoulder at that grin tells her all she needs to know.

She needs this.

So even though her heart is aching for Aang right now, and there is a not small part of her that wants to shove everyone out of her house just so she can protect him, the much larger part of her focuses on the right now. This girl, Aang's successor, this stranger, her grandchildren's protector.

So she grins herself and looks straight ahead, turning her attention completely to the run, pacing her stride for a longer race.]

Race you there!

[Come on, Korra. Let's show them how Water Tribe girls get it done.

They can stop when they get to the riverbank. Katara, for one, will be panting.]

I don't know where we're going!

[But she laughs, and picks up her speed just enough to catch up to Katara so they're neck-and-neck. Her heart pumps fast, and it's loud in her ears by the time they make it to the river. She's panting too, but she doesn't feel the need to double over and hold her knees. No, she's got power and pretty good stamina.]

But I guess [pant] here we are.

[Katara's breathing is already beginning to even out, and she notes a similar resistance to the strain of the exercise in the other girl with approval.]

Yeah. [A deep breath - control - and she shrugs and smiles a little.]

I was just trying to escape before anyone caught us leaving and wanted to come along, but sometimes it feels good just to run.

[To be honest? It had done her good too.]

Yeah, it's kind of nice to get lost and let the adrenaline pump.

Yeah.

[Mmm. Katara tilts her head slightly to the side, assessing the other girl. Avatar.

...yeah.]

Let's keep moving.

[She starts up the river, towards the direction of the lake.]

[Korra follows behind Katara. She's suddenly at a loss for what to say. During the run her world was only as big as the elements she connected with, but now she's back to the awkward reality. The reality that she's taking a walk with a women she knew to be over eighty years old.]

[...y u p.]

So... "Sifu Katara," huh?

Heh, yeah... You kind of helped me master waterbending in the future.

I'd love to see some of what I... taught you... sometime.

[Oh hell.]

Hey, I don't mind showing off.

[This is the sound of Genuine Interest.]

Really? Great! Because I really would like to see.

[But Katara's becoming aware of another problem now and is searching for a tactful segue. However, since she occasionally has the tact of a Mack truck, she may soon give up and go for it.]

I just hope you're not disappointed.

[Katara looks at Korra and assesses her quickly. Then she smiles.]

I think I'll look forward to it. But maybe not today - unless you really want to.

[The girl does love her bending, after all.]

[She would love to, but-]

Maybe when my bending stops feeling so weird.

Yeah, it's terrible, isn't it? Like being half-deaf.

[She gives Korra a sympathetic look.]

But in some ways, it's an advantage. I've been pushing against the power cap for almost three years now, and I'm easily just as strong now inside the barrier as I was outside of it when I first got here. So you can look at it like resistance training.

[...belatedly, it crosses Katara's mind that someone might not have explained the barrier to Korra yet.]

[She got the short version from Ikki.]

You know what? That makes it sound kind of fun.

It's better than feeling half-deaf.

[A wry shrug.]

Just... try to avoid going down into the tunnels. Anyone with power is completely cut off there.
