Not for you. [Lucky him, being a super soldier.] How's Howard taking it?

He's not too happy about it actually. I think he's been spending a lot of time in his room. [Or maybe he's been teleported out of the apartment. It's hard to tell.]

[She nods.] Tony's probably doing the same, except he'll be up in his lab. [Which is actually sort of comforting, since Pepper knows he'll have everything he needs nearby.]

[He snorts in amusement and shakes his head, almost fondly.] Like father, like son.

Exactly. [And it's not the only way in which they're alike. But that's dangerous territory, and Pepper glances around before she leans closer to Steve, lowering her voice.]

He still doesn't know, does he?

[He shakes his head.]

No. I've tried telling Tony to just get it over with, because Howard will figure it out eventually, there's no way he won't. But Tony will do what Tony wants to do. And I promised not to say anything.

[Pepper can definitely understand Steve's efforts--but she knows better than almost anyone how futile they are.]

Tony's never been the best at communicating. [And ironically, Howard was a significant part of the reason for that.] Honestly, he probably is waiting for Howard to put it together himself.

I guess I just don't understand why Tony thinks Howard would react so badly to the news.

[She glances down then, briefly debating how much she should tell Steve. It's hard to decide just what she should keep in confidence, and what Steve should know, since he's just as much in the thick of this as she is.]

Howard died when Tony was still a teenager--so he never got to see the man Tony became. [Pepper meets Steve's gaze, picking her words carefully.] It's probably his last chance to be someone worthwhile in Howard's eyes--or to be a disappointment.

I think anyone would be afraid of that. [Especially someone who thinks he never made his father proud.]

[He gives her an incredulous look. From what he's gotten from Howard and seen from how the two interact, Tony wasn't exactly making a good impression.]

That would make more sense if it seemed like Tony was actually making an effort to play nice with him.

Believe it or not, he is. The fact that he talks to him at all is a pretty huge effort on Tony's part--and let's face it. Playing nice with anyone isn't his strong suit anyway. I mean, how long did it take for you to get irritated with him when you first met him?
