An Avatar? Do only Avatars have reincarnations in your world?

[She's clueless, as usual!]

Kyoshi was an Avatar too? That must make them very, very special.

That I know of. I... I don't really know what happens to most other people. [Over to the brighter subject.] I wouldn't say we're that special. But we're kinda unique.

[She notes his sadness, and makes a mental note to be more kind to the boy. In her world, at least, souls do reincarnate. Though most don't remember their past selves.]

Aang, everyone reincarnates. In my world, at least. People are reborn in new bodies when they pass. Its not bad, they get to have a new, interesting life, and build on their past self. I can't imagine its too different in your world. Maybe you just remember yours better?

And...what makes Avatars unique?

You might be right about that. Thanks. [It's definitely a more refreshing thought than just watching from the spirit world as everyone slowly disappeared. Instead he could watch them all grow into new lives, with new friends and lovers. They'd still be living on in some form.]

And the Avatar is the only person who can master all four elements and is supposed to keep peace in the world.

Master the elements? Are you some sort of mage? [Or recalling her earlier conversation with Toph]

Oh, that's me! A bender! You've heard of it?

I know a little. I met an...Earthbender named Toph the other day. Is she your friend?

[Toph had made quite the impression, really.]

Yep! She's one of my best friends.

Good to know! She's teaching me to be tougher, I think. Or that was the intent. It turned into us being silly and sharing insults and techniques to intimidate people.

Well that sounds like how a training session with Toph can go. But most of the time we don't get past the "tough" part.

She seems very sweet, in her own way. But definitely tough. She is fascinating. One of the most fascinating humans I've met in a long, long time.

[Saori smiles genuinely. Out of everyone she'd met? Toph was the most fun]

[Remembering how down Toph had been feeling recently, it felt good to know Toph was still having some fun.]

I'm glad you got along so well. We could always use more friends. Do you meet a lot of humans?

Mmm, more friends are always helpful.

Yes, of course. Humans are the norm, aren't they? Even here.

Usually! But I didn't want to assume. It sounds like you live longer than most people in your world, too.

Oh. I'm...not human. I do live longer than most people, too.

[She shrugs]

I'm a Kami, a god of storms called the Daughter of Wind and Rain.

A god of storms? That's... really neat! [Aang quickly remembers himself and bows.] It's an honor to meet you.

And I am honored to meet you, Aang.

[She inclines her head politely]

I was wondering something. I can sense something about you. Have you ever dealt with spirits before?

Yeah, it's one of my Avatar duties to deal with the spirits from time to time. That's what makes meeting you even more honorable.

Oh! So you are a priest, then? My, you are a fascinating one.

[Genuinely smiling right back at ya!]

Are the spirits of your world more like me then, like gods? Or, are they more like ghosts?

Thanks! I'm a monk, but that and being the Avatar's like being a priest I guess.

It's hard to tell. They're pretty... spirit-y. I guess they're closer to gods. Lots of them look like animals and control different aspects of the living world.

Where I am from, Monks and Priests are similar enough to be the same.

[She nods at that though]

That sounds like the kami, my kind. Each of us controls some part of the natural world. Weather, time, the sun, things like that. But, do they look like me?

I guess the definitions are kind of similar in ways.

They don't really look like you. Most of the spirits look more like animals or weird creatures. Only the spirits of the other Avatars look like people, because they were people. [Pause] There's also the Painted Lady, but I'm not sure if she was completely real.

Weird creatures?

[You have her attention, because this...decidedly...is not her natural form, just one she chooses to take]

and why do you think the Painted Lady might be untrue?

Yeah! The first spirit I met looked like an animal that I now know is called a panda! The water and ocean spirits took on the forms of fish... and there was one scary spirit called Koh the Face Stealer. He was... kind of like a spider. It's hard to describe...

But the Painted Lady? I met her once, but it was actually my friend Katara in disguise, trying to help a village.

Koh the Face Stealer?

[THAT sounds more like a Kami. An odd form, a title, and that sort of thing]
