[Where as Xzana doesn't realize Jilly's "Oh!" is for natural water absorbing capabilities.]

It feels like rain, but rain does not have the magic to fly. It is just water and can only fall, not climb.

...maybe after she actually figures out whether this woman is truly upset by the rain]

Maybe the magic isn't in the rain itself? Maybe it's in the air, or something else entirely?

Someone must have cast some sort of spell. I wonder how far it's reach is. [She's looking around for another person now, but still eying Jilly a bit suspiciously. Just a bit.]

[she couldn't help but laugh at the suspicion] I promise it's not me. Cross my heart. [she even made the criss-cross motion over her chest, though she knew the other woman probably wouldn't recognize the gesture. It didn't seem to be a universal one, even with people from alternate Earths]

...I guess you haven't been here, long?

[IS THAT SOME SORT OF WARD WOMAN!?] Not a full season yet. No.

[despite the smile and a bit of light amusement at the woman's suspicion, Jilly doesn't push her luck. She keeps her hands visible, and her voice isn't mocking when she continues]

This is probably the doing of the Malnosso--the ones who brought us here. About once a month, something like this will happen. If it's not raining the wrong way, it will be people turning into objects or shrinking or growing or believing they're something they're not. The rules don't tend to work the way you expect.

They must be very powerful warlocks.

I think they're scientists, actually.

...The less fun version of warlocks.

[not that warlocks couldn't be terrifying. After all, it was always the witch or warlock causing trouble in the stories. But Jilly had seen more ugliness from men than she had from magic, and the Malnosso hadn't really changed that.]

They don't use magic. They use machines and medicines to change things.

Like...have you seen the lights that go on in the houses at night? That's not magic. They built devices that let them make light with a switch, whether they have magic or not.

[she paused]

I'm Jilly, by the way.

Those are candles humans use to light their houses. [Sorry, Jilly, you're talking to a forest dweller.] You do not use candles in yours?

[Oh! Name thing! She's getting good at this one!] My mother named me Xzana.

[she smiled at that]

Very bright candles. Brighter than normal ones.

It's nice to meet you, Xzana.

[She nods her head politely back. Not sure yet though if she can trust this woman.] Brighter than normal? How do you make them brighter than normal fire?

With a machine.

[she gave the other woman a slightly apologetic smile] Actually, I'm not very good at explaining it. I don't really understand it myself. But...

I guess...it's like how there's energy all around us, just waiting to be used. And when you do something like striking flint and metal together, you get sparks. Fire. These machines capture that energy and make it so you can use it whenever you want...and more of it at once. So you get a very bright light, like you get with a very hot fire.

[she's not sure if she's grateful or not that any of her more scientifically-minded friends weren't there, since she's fairly certain she butchered that explanation]

I could show you, if you wanted.

[she could sense that distrust, though. The wariness. It wasn't the same uncertainty she got from streetkids, but it was close enough to recognize.]

You wouldn't even have to come inside. I could just show you through a window.

[At first she was going to say no, but that option gives her pause. She really was curious to see these magic lights. No pressure to come inside? And it was raining. Even if it was upside down.]

No, I would like to see these magic lights.

[Pause. Oh! That word Casimir always wanted her to use!]

Please.

[she grinned, tilting her head back towards the buildings]

Alright, then. I'm in House 7. It's not a far walk.

[With a small nod, Xzana will follow. Although she keeps note of her surroundings. Just in case this is some sort of trap.]

[she was careful to keep her pace regular, and not to fall into step too close to the other woman. Claws and scales and doubled wings made it clear she wasn't human...or at least not in a way Jilly was familiar with...but the artist still knew people. She knew the importance of respecting boundaries. So she kept her distance, without actually giving off an aura of being threatened. Somehow, she was confident that wouldn't be an issue.

When they reached Seven, Jilly approached the door first, opening it with one hand before she looked back at Xzana.]

Do you want to come in?

[she could still show her the lights through the window if the other woman preferred that, and she did her best to keep her tone open. Unpressuring.]

[She stares through the doorway. It looked a bit like the human houses she had been in before, yet very different too.]

You live here? It is so big!

[theoniongirl]

[she nodded, smiling] It really is. Much bigger than I had back home.

[much bigger than she could hope to afford, in Newford] But I live with three other people, too, so it's not just me.

Why do four humans require so much space? Is it not hard to heat in winter?

I'm am the losingest loser who ever lost. /drags the thread into eternity.

[she shook her head] We probably don't need this much space. It's the biggest place I've ever lived, actually. But it stays nice and warm in the winter.

[she doesn't mention heaters. She has the feeling that won't be any easier for Xzana to understand than electricity was]

That's okay! I'm happy to tag forever!

[Xzana moves towards the entrance, still looking up in amazement at the size of the community building.] Must use a lot of wood.

[she smiled] Not as much as you might think.

[She enters slowly, eyes looking all around. Taking in any dangers that could possibly come at her.]
