What happened to him after you stopped him?

[It was the 70s. Lupin's not even sure that he wasn't mad at the time.]

He was spaced, Steve. Sent into the black without any protection.

...but enough about that guy. There were portals, you said?

Oh. [It's just as well that Lupin changes the topic. Steve isn't even sure how to respond to that.]

Yeah, Loki-it's a long story-came back to Earth so he could open the portal and allow the Chitauri to invade. Once it was closed, all the Chitauri that made it to our side dropped dead.

...

I thought that Loki was the Norse god of fire and chaos.

...I heard he's the god of mischief. At least that's what I think Thor said.

Sounds right. And the Chitauri?

What about them?

Loki is one of them?

Well, no. He joined up with them to take over the planet.

I..see. [He didn't, but who was he to argue against ancient gods joining with aliens for world conquest?

It struck him with an idea though.]

Portal implies barrier. Do you think you could do something against the barrier that's around our little village if you had the rest of your team here?

[He shakes his head.] I don't think so. It was the Tessaract that created the portal. It's like this incredibly powerful Asgardian...cube basically.

Pity we don't have that magic cube then.

[Though, realistically, he could guess why.] It could really balance the game..and they're not going to let that happen.

Honestly I think it's too dangerous to have possession of. That's why we let Thor go back home with it.

You have a Norse god on your team too? [One he could have sworn that he met over his first Shift, no less. He tried to steal his hammer...]

Well, there's Iron Man, or Tony Stark, who is actually here as well. And the Hulk, who is also here but from a different universe. And then there's Hawkeye and Black Widow, who are both SHIELD agents.

...Tonton.

[Was one of Steve's teammates, and the information caught Lupin by surprise. It was evident in the sudden shift in tone that there was no love lost between them, if only for Tony's nature.

The Hulk was cool. Lupin actually orchestrated a battle tactic specifically designed for the Hulk on a mission back in April. They got along decently. But Tony Stark...]

I can't believe that an irresponsible frat boy like him is teamed up with a nice guy like you.

[Honestly, the reaction to Tony didn't surprise or bother Steve. Partly because he'd gotten a similar reaction from Adele and partly because he remembers his own almost instant dislike of the man.]

Well we have Fury to thank for that. He's the one that brought us together. But honestly, Tony is a valuable asset to the team.

[Tony is a hard man to like.]

I would honestly never imagine that with how stupidly impulsive he is. You are aware that he got several people hurt back in January by appealing to the village's frustration as a whole, aren't you?

[And that gets his attention. Never has Tony mentioned anything like that. Though he has a pretty good idea why.]

...No, he didn't. What happened?

He organized an underground brawl under the guise of training. [A lie that a bunch of people fell for, including himself.] The way he arranged the 'spars' was so inefficient that there were children paired against adults and trained soldiers against laymen.

[He was himself hurt, and dealt with the injuries for about two months after. Lupin knew it was his own impulsivity and compounded injuries, but he was still angry. It was the first time he gave into temptation in Luceti, and it wasn't the last.]

[Steve goes completely still, the words 'under the guise' and 'children' ringing particularly loud in his ears. His hands curl into tight fists and his jaw clenches. Suddenly he understands why Tony seems to have such a mixed review with people.

He thought he knew Tony, at least a little better by now. But he'd never, ever expected him to act so stupidly.]

And then what happened? Was anyone...[He's mostly thinking about the children.] Was anyone hurt?

Yeah, people got hurt. Fortunately, we have lots of kids with super powers here, and young people who are trained fighters. It still doesn't mean that anything was evenly matched.

[He was himself paired with a swordsman half his age, and went down in the third round. He really doesn't have more information than that, because he was busy skulking and trying to sneak by the doctors.]

[He nods slowly.]

No, I know that. Thank you for telling me.

[He forces himself to calm down and un-tense. He couldn't just go storming out to confront Tony, as much as he may want to.]

[He observed Steve for a moment, at the lingering stress his words caused. There wasn't much else that he could do, but speak the truth.]

...He's an idiot, but not stupid, just so you know. He did at least get a couple of doctors and healers down there, one of my friends included. But, there's only so much they can do when the arena is underground.

It's hard bringing equipment into the tunnels, and they dampen any powers that a person might have.

[He shrugs, trying to be idle.]

You're welcome. I figured that you deserved an explanation, seeing as you're a very nice guy when compared to him. Tonton's been here for a while, and has a rep. Be careful.

[It's a relief to hear that at least. But it doesn't do much to ease away the anger flaring in his gut.]

I just never expected him to do something like that. [Stupid, reckless, acts of random violence, yes. But not by bringing others into it.]
