What: Building an art gallery
When: August 11 thru whenever they finish. No later than the 16th.
Where: The open space to the left of CH 4/across from House 39
Summary: So Pepper suckered some people into manual labor. These are the results.
Rating: PG-13, maybe, if someone hits their thumb with a hammer and says bad things.

[She can't hide it; Pepper is ecstatic to take this major step in the art gallery project. The construction marks the point where the idea shifts into reality, and this time? She's responsible for much more than 12% of the baby.

Of course, the good cheer will probably turn into frustration as the building goes on, but what can she do? Other than try to supervise. And yes, Tony, that is Pepper's job, so no attempting to use it as an excuse to slack off. Also part of Pepper's job is providing drinks and food for everyone involved, and making sure there are no major injuries, so expect refreshments and first aid kits on site. And when she's not tending to anyone else's needs or watching Steve and Tony at work for reasons, Pepper might even jump into the fray, attempting a bit of building herself--success remaining to be seen.]

[She took the nail and set it up on the next part of the frame.]

The Prof always made sure we had enough materials when we had ta rebuild the Mansion. If it falls over, I guess we'll figure it out.

Once it's finished I'll see about enchanting it so at least the artwork might be protected. I'm sure it'll be fine, though. Everyone's working hard, after all.

[She tilts her head and gives him a considering look.]

You wanna give this a shot?

...What, the construction? I'm about the last person you'd want attempting manual labour.

[Rogue could make a horrible pun about nailing here.

She chooses not to, but the wickedness of it stays in her eyes.]

Is that it, or do ya just not wanna give up the view?

[Hrnk. He's been caught.]

Th-that's not what I've been doing!

[Rogue laughs, briefly but a genuine, throaty laugh.]

Dang, Billy. You've to to work on your "lying" face.

[....Okay, he has to give her that one.]

Well, can you blame me? Not just Teddy, but Cap, too...

Naw, I can't blame you. If I wasn't workin', I'd likely be joinin' ya.

The obvious answer to that would be to take a break, then.

[She tilts her head, tempted.]

Maybe after I get this frame up.

[Billy sizes up the frame, brows furrowed. It's like he's facing down against his evil nemesis.]

Anything I can do?

[She's got it covered, but, hey, life skills, right?]

How are ya at lining things up according to code?

[That probably is not the sort of response she's looking for.]

She takes a breath.]

Building code. Each of these beams needs ta be nailed four inches away from the other one. I need to measure the distance each time and make sure it's all aligned. If you could measure it and set it in place, then I'd just hafta hammer.

[Sob. Clearly the life of a Big Apple high-riser kid has spoiled him when it comes to manual labour. He perks up at her answer, though- that doesn't sound so hard.]

Yeah, sure, I can do that!

[Rogue nods. Attaboy, Billy!]

[It's always nice to feel useful. Hurriedly retrieving the tools of his new task, he gets to work immediately, measuring out each line with care and marking it out. He's not the fastest worker ever, but enthusiasm has to count for something, right?]

[Enthusiasm does count for something. She glances up at him.]

Make sure ya keep it straight.

[Nice and aligned.]

Uh... should I be doing something else to make sure of that?

[Oh geez, is he failing already?]

Naw, you're good. Just keep your eye up an' down the board to watch where it hits the other side of the frame.

Okay got it. [He works in silence for a bit, then glances back over at her.] So you've done this kind of thing before?

[She glances up at him and shoves her bangs back.]

Yeah, a few times. Just the one big job, though, after the Mansion got blown up.

What happened? If you don't mind me asking, I mean.

[She stills for a moment, not really wanting to discuss that. It was ugly. And painful. And still had the power to make her angry.

But a moment's consideration told her that it would probably be more trouble hiding it than not.]

Mystique managed ta sneak inside and activate the self-destruct. Why we had a self-destruct, I don't even know. But Scott was there an' everyone got out okay. The mansion was leveled, though.
