Where: House 53. Gilbert's doing catering, after all.
Summary: Huffy Young Master Nightray grows a year older. Technically.

[Leo had never been any good at celebrating birthdays. Sure, he knew that cake was a good idea, and gifts obligatory (spending a year in a house full of children clued him in on this, granted), but when it came to making preparations, it was simply easier to leave it to Gilbert . Not all of it, of course, just-- the most important bits.

That's why the preparations are kept simple-- Elliot really wasn't the kind for huge parties anyway and this seemed appropriate. ]

I didn't say it was embarrassing. [...well, actually it is kind of embarrassing. But that wasn't the point.] It's strange celebrating birthdays here.

[He shuts the book carefully, maybe reading will have to come later.]

...because we're not supposed to age here?

[Nooooo, go back to reading!! He doesn't actually say anything—he simply makes a sound and looks away again. It's... yeah. Something like that.]

It seems a little silly, doesn't it? [Hahaha.] I'd rather not just think about a friend's birthday and "move on", though.

I wouldn't mind.

[It's not like he'd have just forgotten about it, after all, he just wouldn't be making a big deal out of it! That would be much better.]

[He smiles pleasantly at him from his curled up position on the chair. Of course Elliot wouldn't, but--]

You'd do the same for any of ours, though.

[...okay, that's kind of embarrassing to hear. His face goes slightly red, but he shakes his head.]

You could do it without making a fuss.

[Because, as far as he's concerned, this is definitely a fuss!]

It's not really a fuss. [Just a cake and something simple, right? ...wait, on second thoughts.] I'm not sure about what your brother thinks, though.

[holyknights]

It's a fuss. [He didn't need cake or fancy food or any of those things. He turns, considering heading back upstairs.] Tell me when dinner's ready.

[It's a simple "Ah" that he gets in reply because Leo's not going to stop him. Why should he, anyway? As long as he didn't mind the whole— cake and somewhat lavish dinner, if Gil had really overdone it.

AND AFTER THE CAKE AND ALL THE DOODADS...

[...okay, so maybe he had. A little. A lot?!

If Elliot's heading upstairs, Leo's following too! But he can't help commenting—]

I didn't know that he could cook so well.

[Elliot would frown at that, but he's gotten used to this. The comment Leo makes is about something that he'd have already known if he still remembered this place. In fact, he's pretty sure they even had this conversation before. But he can't let it frustrate him when he knows it's not the other boy's fault.

As he heads upstairs, he nods.]

He's useless at a lot of things, but at least he can cook.

[statice]

[He can shoot too. Leo's useless at that.]

Was he good at it from the start? [Did he learn by serving Oz?]

I don't know. He never had to do it at home. He was always good at it here, though, so I guess he must have been.

[statice]

[Well, that's not entirely surprising. Leo isn't sure Elliot's ever entered a kitchen either.]

...it's a good thing he's here then. I don't think I could've made anything like that.

[holyknights]

Your cooking's not bad, either. [He says this just as he reaches the top of the stairs.] You just don't have to do it enough.

[So maybe he could be better with practice, that's what he means.]

[Wow, Elliot, you make it sound like he should cook for you...]

Maybe. I've never really tried to cook anything fancy though. [headtilt...] It's always seemed too unnecessarily complicated.

[Well, he is practically his wife... Or maybe it's the other way around, huh.]

It doesn't have to be complicated. [...you know. For when he has to cook, that is.] But there's nothing to worry about as long as Gil's around.
