DRAFT - The Battle of Vaskoth

On the 25th, Lucetians are ushered in to join an already growing army to repel the Cultists.

On the 26th, strange symptoms are reported. The first Runners appear and by nightfall, the hospital is lost.

On the 27th, the cultist horde is completely lost to the virus. They send no more reinforcements.

On the 28th, the situation is grim and an evacuation is called. But the battle is not over.

Notes: There will be two NPC threads. One for Specialist Davis and another for Carol.

[Aang can't formulate a full response right now. The decapitated shambler causes Aang to stare on in shock, just barely managing to utter his name.]

L- Loki.

So it would seem.

[He holds up a hand. The dagger yanks itself from the flaming corpse and returns.]

You are still here. Why is that?

[He speaks softly, still in a state of shock.]

I have to.

You look rather tired.

[Loki knows at this point, he could ask Aang why again, and he has little doubt he'll be handed something along the lines of 'blah blah heroism blah blah self-sacrifice blah blah responsibilities' and doesn't see the point. He doesn't see the worth in any of those things.

Rather, he cuts to what he considers to be the heart of the matter, which would be the person in this equation he actually cares about. The message he received sees to that. Were he concerned only about himself, he wouldn't particularly care if Aang were eaten by zombies; it would be just one more person to kill if it came to that, and Loki is already on his way to the evacuation point. But his friendship with Ikki, the fact that she's gone so far as to declare him her brother, complicates matters badly. He doesn't want to face a game of pai sho in the near future where he might have to admit to Ikki that he gave her grandfather a relatively merciful death. That is not the sort of conversation one has over tea.

His tone drops to something more quiet.]

Your granddaughter needs you. You ought to go home.

She's safe. And she'll stay safe as long as I make sure all of this horrible mess stays here!

She shall not thank you if you die in the process.

This is a losing battle. The maths are not in our favor.

[He goes pale at the moment, considering the possibility of death. Of dying again. But he quickly stands his ground.]

But... that doesn't matter. There's always some way to turn things around. Always. If I can help this place, I can help this world, and that'll keep Ikki safe. I won't... I'm not gonna die. I absolutely can't.

Can't makes very little difference when you're so exhausted.

We will be overwhelmed, sooner rather than later. Our allies are being turned against us by this disease, which spreads further each day and thus increases the numbers of our opponents faster than we can conceivably destroy them. I imagine soon, the only victory will be to burn it all to ash.

[Loki shakes his head.]

The smart choice at this point is to heed the call for evacuation. That is my intention. You should go as well... for the sake of those not here.

[He breathes heavily.]

I... But no, I... have to make sure everyone's okay. That I'm not leaving behind anyone who'll need me. I'm tired but... I can still keep going for a while. Maybe another day, even.

[The temptation is great to just knock him over the head and grab him. That has never been Loki's way, though.

His tone becomes more sober.]

It may well be more than a day, Aang. And you cannot help anyone in such an exhausted state. I fear what would then happen, in a moment of inattention.

And... I daresay Ikki needs you more than any here. It is time to go.

[He hesitates for effect, but he can lie easily, spin this how he needs. Right now, he wants Aang to leave, and he will say what he needs to make that happen.]

If I agree to stay in your stead, will you go? I am... rather more enduring than anyone mortal.

[He takes a moment and looks at him, considering his words. His expression softens when he remembers Ikki.]

I miss her.

[Loki nods]

I know you must.

And if you will forgive me, I do as well, in my own way.

Go back to her. [He hesitates, as if this is very difficult for him to say.] Please.

[It's more effective in Aang's own mind, where he imagines Ikki saying the "please".]

If I go... Can you - Can you keep an eye on my friends, until they come back too? I'm just... I'm worried. I don't want anything to happen to any of them.

[He has Aang now, so to speak. The rest is just details.]

Give me their names and I will do my utmost.

[Also useful to know, of course, how allegiances run.]

W-well, lemme think there's Shikamaru, S- Silver, Nami, Mia... Robin. They both have to be okay. And Roku! I don't know if he went home, I couldn't find him. Masaomi, I met someone named Zelos, and... and... I don't wanna forget anyone! [He reaches into a fold of his robes to pull out his journal, opens it to the draft announcement and begins underlining a good number of the names, including Steve Rogers. One that is notably untouched is Moro's - and Ikki's is crossed out.]

[Steve Rogers? Ooooooh Aang, you comedian. Good thing Loki has an excellent poker face.

He takes out his own journal and begins to note down the names mentioned.]

I will do the best that I can.

[After a moment of soft hesitation.]

Thanks, Loki. I really appreciate it, and I know Ikki will too. [And then he underlines Loki's own name sharply.] But you gotta make sure you come back okay, too, so Ikki'll be the happiest she can be.

[Loki smiles.]

That, I will try to do.

Thank you, Aang. [He hesitates again, not sure quite how to phrase what he says next, then shrugs.]

Please give her a hug for me.

[Aang nods as he gets to his feet and puts his journal back away.]

I'll try to work one in with all the other hugs I'm planning. [He looks back as he begins to walk away.] Thank you, Loki. And... good luck.

[Loki nods. Then between one moment and the next, as Aang glances back, he vanishes.]
