DRAFT - The Battle of Vaskoth

On the 25th, Lucetians are ushered in to join an already growing army to repel the Cultists.

On the 26th, strange symptoms are reported. The first Runners appear and by nightfall, the hospital is lost.

On the 27th, the cultist horde is completely lost to the virus. They send no more reinforcements.

On the 28th, the situation is grim and an evacuation is called. But the battle is not over.

Notes: There will be two NPC threads. One for Specialist Davis and another for Carol.

What do you mean when you say "be a hero"?

I mean... saving people. Stopping the battle. I'm the Avatar. It's the kind of thing I'm supposed to do, and I'm gonna come back a failure. I couldn't save Robin and... and Moro.

[Oh, Aang. She pushes her own similar worries aside completely, stopping him with a hand and giving him a reassuring smile.]

You aren't a failure. Nobody was prepared for this and to do the best that you can is more than enough.

Did I do my best? Moro got... got ended. [He mutters it out as clearly as he can.] And I helped. How can I still be a hero?

[That gives her pause. She hates all of this "merciful" killing that keeps happening. Hates it. There must be some other way.

That's not the answer Aang needs to hear.]

No one here is asking you to be that kind of hero. Despite that...you didn't make the decision to help lightly, I'm sure, and it wasn't one you...you didn't want to. To hurt her. You would take it back if you could.

[He responds in a choked voice.]

I would.

That is what separates you. [They aren't even walking anymore, are they? Mia puts both of her hands on Aang's shoulders again.] I don't know if it makes you a hero. I think it does make you a good person. Someone to strive to be like.

[He feels something like comfort from the touch, briefly looks up to her eyes, but then he flickers down to the ground.]

I... I guess you might be right. Thanks. We tried, we tried, we could never hold her still for long and she was so dangerous... But I - Could I still face them, if I go back? With... what I've done?

The hard thing to hear is that you will have to face them with it because you've already done it. [Please look at her. If he doesn't she'll gently try to make him by lifting his chin.] War, like this...is hard. It's painful. [And she isn't being flippant or cavalier about saying it.]

[He finds himself wrapping her in a hug as the tears start to come out.]

I want to go home. I want to see them again.

[Even without using any Psynergy she can feel how tired he is; returning the hug is as much about holding him up as it is comforting him.]

I know. We all do. This time, you have the chance, and I hope you take it.

I see now. I think I will. I think I... have to. But... but Mia. [He pulls back while still supporting himself against her, as he looks up at her eyes.] Will you be okay? You have to be okay.

I am staying. [In light of all this it's extra hard and feels a touch hypocritical.] There's a chance that we can find a way to cure this virus and I want to help. I won't be fighting or putting myself in danger out here.

[He blinks and tries to take it in. His instinct is to tell her to come with her. But... he knows the importance of this. She can make a cure. That... that can help Robin.]

I like healers. I... I respect healers. A whole, whole lot. Because they can help people instead of hurting them. Just... just please, Mia, stay out of danger. If I go... a-and you stay... I wouldn't forgive myself if something happened to you.

I promise to do everything I can to stay safe here.

[He whispers softly as he tries to pull away completely to stand on his own two feet, offering a light smile.]

Thank you, Mia. At least... at least I'll have some good news for Katara.

[Ah, but she isn't letting him go. Not completely. He still feels unsteady, so she'll keep an arm around his shoulders.]

She's worried about you, isn't she?

[Come on, Aang, let's find you somewhere to rest.]

[He finds himself accepting her support without noticing as he talks to her.]

She is. She always is. She's written to me... every day. She's been sounding friendly, but she tells us to be safe, too. At least... I know things are okay back at Luceti. The experiment sounds... kinda fun, really.

An experiment that sounds fun? Will wonders never cease. That's an extra reason for you to go back, hmm?

[He loses himself in the wistful conversation.]

I... I guess so. There are ghosts that are harmless and it sounds like... they like to get candy and play jokes. And there's a maze and... big webs and everything. I... I wonder if I can still enjoy it.

Ghosts? And you think that sounds fun? [It might not be as bad as those masks, though.]

Even if it is gone by the time you return, I am sure you'll find something else peaceful to do.

Well, the way Katara described them... They're not trying to hurt anybody, it seems. They play jokes and look for candy instead.

Of course. I... I can be back in time for Halloween. Ikki's been looking forward to that so much. [He gives her a fond smile.] She's gonna dress up as a character named Little Red.

Little red? Are you going to be Bigger Red?

[No one who reminds her so much of Ivan can be called "big" in her head. Not until said blond boy also outgrows her.]

N-no, I'm going to be... [Robin. He put together the costume already.] I don't know yet.
