Happy Happy birthday!

Who: Close friends of Rei Hino's and one other guest
What: Birthday party surprise times!

Summary: Rei is getting a surprise birthday party!

Helios had done all he could to make sure Rei was out long enough from the shrine to setup for what was indeed her birthday. With some help from her friends and close acquaintances Helios had decorated the shrine in some lights and lanterns for the occasion. It was nothing too outrageous because he knew Rei was a more subtle person, so the decorations are few but meaningful.

Birthdays are good for starting fresh, and spring is a time for letting go of the past and starting anew. The lanterns symbolize that but also help with the festivities. Even if its a small affair Helios puts a lot of hard work into it because of how helpful Rei has been these past few weeks. So to help ease out of the terrible feelings since the draft and to celebrate the birthday of a good friend Helios will invite whoever is close to the young woman.

((ooc; For the sake of not hurting my hands trying to juggle both a post and a log I'm just going to handwave Helios putting up the announcement over the journals to help set things up for Rei's party. If you're character is a close acquaintance/friend of Rei's they're more than welcome to stop by!))

Well, in that case I'm lucky that I brought both, right?

[Because he was terribly uncreative when it came to bringing stuff to parties. He pulls a bag out from under the table where he'd kept a couple of bottles back, and offers her a bottle of red wine.]

How's that? I have no idea about vintages or anything so...

Max.

[She gives him a teasing look]

I'm seventeen, I don't know much about wine other than I have a little on every birthday since I was twelve. My grandpa said it was proper. So I'm sure it's fine.

[Gosh, she's not a wine-fiend.]

[He laughs softly, shaking his head.]

I feel like I should know something about wine though. Not that most of it probably applies. Who knows where the hell they get the stuff from here?

I honestly have no idea. I assume they shift it in like they do us. But...most things here are pretty high quality.

[She gives the bottle an appraising look though.]

It looks like it should be alright though. Thank you for bringing it.

I guess they must. I recognise some of the brands at least.

[He twists off the cap, and god, screw caps are the gift of the gods when it comes to opening wine.]

Shall I pour a glass?

[She nods]

If you don't mind.

[He grabs a couple of glasses, pouring them both a reasonable glass of wine and handing one over.]

So, Happy Birthday, Rei. Here's to many more happy ones.

[She takes it and raises it slightly, dipping her head in thanks.]

Thank you, Max. You're a good friend, and I'm glad to share today with you.

Same here. I... I appreciate what you've done for me. So thanks for that.

[Rei took a sip and huffed out a faint laugh. He was thanking her? After everything he'd done for her, he was thanking her. She giggled, her face just sort of twisting for a moment in a weird sort of way, shoulders twitching and lips pulling back into a smile. She laughs a bit more loudly, almost hoarsely, but still low enough that only he'd hear]

It's...fine. I should be the one thanking you.

[He's not sure what's quite so funny about what he'd said so he just gives a somewhat bemused smile.]

I- I haven't done anything... And I meant, y'know... Helios...

You saved my life. And you...you talked to me about...my feelings.

[She keeps up that little shaking laugh, shoulders unsteady, but seems to regain control while she talks]

I'm glad I could make you happy. It was the least I could do.

It... it seems like what any halfway decent person would do, I guess. But I'm glad I could help you.

I appreciate it. [He glances over at Helios, for a moment, a fond look on his face.] Really. It makes me happy.

I'm glad you could too. I don't have a strong desire to be dead.

[She slides over closer, more in control of herself than before.]

It's good that you're happy. I never did apologize properly for tricking you.

Yeah, me either. I'm under strict orders from one of my housemates that I'm not allowed to die while anyone else in the house is still breathing.

[He smiles, giving a soft laugh.]

Well, you were right. Neither of us would ever have said anything if we hadn't been forced to.

[Rei takes another sip of wine and nods sagely]

You aren't allowed to die. Not now that you're dating my friend. I won't allow it.

I don't have any particular desire to die, trust me on that. I spend too much time around dead things at home as it is. It's depressing.

Good.

[She leans against him now, a playful smile forming]

On a happier note, how are things with him, anyway?

[He wraps an arm around her, a warm, friendly gesture. It's kind of nice that she's comfortable with him. He can't help the faint blush that appears on his cheeks.]

Uh... nice. Really nice. I mean... yeah, my vocabulary has been thoroughly screwed which is probably a big clue.

[You know, it's a marked change from how she was a year ago. Her first birthday in Luceti had been just her, Ami, and Usagi. She wouldn't have ever gone near a man like this. And now there were three she was comfortable enough to hug. The hug is welcome, and she closes her eyes in apparent peace.]

It is. You deserve it, and so does he. It makes me incredibly happy, seeing how it turned out.

[Max sips at his wine, content to keep hugging her if she's happy with it.]

Yeah. It's been quite a while since I was last with anyone for more than a quick fling. I like it.

[She takes a sip as well, nodding and not pulling away.]

That's good. I'm glad I was able to help with that. You look a lot happier than before.

[That brings a pleased smile to his face.]

Yeah? I was kind of a mess over the draft so it's not really surprising.

Before that too, Max. I remember what we talked about before we left, and after Valentine's.

You just keep seeing me in a near perpetual state of panic unfortunately. I swear I'm normally more together.
