[Daytime...

Though 99% of students seem to have become suddenly and spectacularly unhinged this weekend, Layton will be hanging on to his identity as a gentleteacher and will be teaching as per usual on the 29th and 30th. He might be a little more emotional that usual, but for the most part he is just your usual nice guy professor. Yes, definitely.

Nighttime (and then some)...

But at night (and then some) the affable Layton is nowhere to be seen and a new face lurks around town: the mysterious MONOCLED MAFIOSO whose actual name you definitely don't know. You do not know this man from anywhere else at all. Your mistake. When he isn't tagging along with his illustrious LOAN SHARK MAFIA BOSS EXTRAORDINAIRE, a.k.a. Tsuna, he'll be doing menial mafia chores like quietly putting out bribes, scoping out town, and extorting people for their sugar and jam and junk. The small stuff.

If a man suddenly finds he needs a bit of sugar for his tea, the monocled man will be just around the corner with a couple packets on hand. If a lady needs to scribble something down, the monocled man will be there in the shadows with a pen at the ready. Need to borrow a piece of paper? He's got one of those too. But when you say borrow, you better mean borrow, because THE PAWNGOLAS never forget what they're owed.

Oh, and fleeting romance. He does a lot of that too. But you still owe him his 6 jars of mustard, missy.]

[Does the mysterious Monocled Mafioso have a band-aide that Vash could "borrow"? In the rush of ripping down one of his wanted posters he's gotten himself a paper cut!]

Ouch!

[And today Vash is dressed like a steroytpical bad guy from an old western. His long hair tied up in a pony tail, complete with black boots, spurs, hat, and dark vest with grey long sleeved shirt.

He's in an alleyway too at night! These posters, who keeps putting them all up anyway?! He'll be thinking on that as he sucks on the finger with the paper cut. Why did it seem paper-cuts hurt even worse than a BIG cut?]

[Why hello there, sir in need of a thing. As Vash ambles along, a vague shape shifts in the gloom of the alleyway and steps out of the shadows as a man, his monocle painted white in the moonlight. His tone of voice is pleasant and conversational.]

Evening, good sir. Are you all right there? [Referring, of course, to the finger in Vash's mouth.]

Hm? [Vash looks towards the man who suddenly appeared in the gloom before taking his finger out of his mouth with a shy laugh.] Oh, it's just a paper cut. I'm alright. I just don't want to accidentally smear blood on anything.

[monocledman]

That would be a concern. You wouldn't want it to get infected, either. Fortunately, I always carry a plaster on me... just in case. [And lo and behold, here is a band-aid in his hand.] Shall I lend it to you?

[goldenglasses]

Ahhh! You have an extra bandage? Thanks! I could really use it!

[monocledman]

[He hands it over easily enough.]

This is no 'extra', unfortunately, as it's the only plaster I have. Sticking plasters have been a bit scarce as of late, so if it's all right with you, I'd actually like to call this something more like a... loan.

[goldenglasses]

[Vash takes the badnage, but stops before he starts to put it on.] Really? I didn't know bandages were so hard to come by! But I think I have some back at my apartment so I guess I could pay you back later.

[There! Totally take care of! He'll start putting that bandage on his finger now.]

[monocledman]

At your leisure. [Though interest rates can be surprisingly high when the client has a questionable history. It would be best for Vash to repay his debt soon. Especially when the monocled man can be notoriously hard to find when he doesn't want to be found...]

Though... pardon me, but you look a bit familiar. Have I seen you somewhere before? [On a poster, perhaps?]

Who? Me! No! I'm pretty sure you've never seen me before! Nope! Never!

[monocledman]

Is that so? My mistake.

[He shifts his weight to one side, and on the wall behind him is pinned a very familiar poster...]

Someone who looks very much like you, then. Identities are so easily mistaken these days.

[Aw man, having that poster right there? That's cheating!]

Ah, yeah, you know... but if you ask me. That guy there is a lot more handsome looking than I am.

[monocledman]

[He turns in half to admire the poster.]

Well, that's very humble of you... though to be fair, it is a very artful sketch. I wonder what this man could have done to earn such a bounty.

... Aah.

[He's not sure if he remembers borrowing anything from the monocled man that appears in front of him tonight. Had he? And why is this guy so familiar looking? He can't place a finger on it though. But ah well, it was a free book as far as he knows and it wasn't that interesting anyway, so he holds it out while peering at the dude.]

This one? Didn't know we had loan sharks in Luceti though.

[monocledman]

[Maiza, you may be a cherished housemate, but a man's gotta pay his dues.]

Please. 'Loan shark' sounds so... predatory. We're simply lenders.

[He inspects the book closely, rifling through the pages for damage.]

And as professional lenders, we take our jobs very seriously. Is there a reason why you failed to return this book on time?

Lenders, eh? Well, excuse me. I do understand how it is to be picky about what you're called.

[He's smiling though. He just happened to conveniently have that book!]

I got engrossed in reading it, but it was a long read y'see.

[monocledman]

I understand. [He nods sympathetically and snaps the book shut.]

However, one really should follow the proper procedures when handling borrowed property. A missed deadline might seem a trivial detail to you, but it also means bitter disappoint for the next in line to borrow. For that reason, sir, I'm afraid I must impose a fee on you.

Can't argue, I'm afraid. What's the price, may I ask, good sir?

[monocledman]

I think it would only make sense for it to be a book. One which would add to our selection. Does that sound fair?

[contaeoro]

Fair enough it seems, although I may be compelled to argue if said book as sentimental value.

[monocledman]

Hm. Well then, by your leave.

[He will be coming in now, thank you. He makes a show of looking around the place.]

Where do you keep your books?

There's a shelf in my room, down the hall to your left. Do take care to brush the dirt off your shoes before you enter, if you will.

[monocledman]

[It isn't in his loan shark nature to be polite, but he gives his shoes the most casual of scuffs before entering... because this is secretly his house too. Oh so secretly. He heads down the hall and to the left as directed, looking into Maiza's room with a bit more interest. It isn't often that he gets a peek in, after all.]

[He's sure his most important books are tucked away at his desk drawer. Not that any of the other books he bothered to keep aren't valuable either. Quickly glancing at the titles:]

[monocledman]

[Mostly free, hm? He gives the spines on the shelf a leisurely read, recognizing some titles more than others. Eventually, he stops on one that he happens to be very familiar with indeed. He plucks Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from its spot with a smart hand.]
