What kind of friend might that be?

[There are so very many shades inherent in that word- and for all her forlorn twists and the rather solitary nature of this walk and the memories it holds for her; she is truly curious. There'd been a time, with another man, a far better man than she'd ever known or deserved, when she'd hoped for something for herself. Something small and simple like a cottage on the beach.]

[He shrugs, like it's no big deal, which may seem to be a odds with his next words. He starts clearing out old tree limbs and fronds from the current area he's prodding at, making a 'clean' spot while he talks.]

Someone who's been good to me, and deserves better than what's she getting hit with in life right now. I can't help her with what's going on; it's not my place, and some of it I can't do anything about anyway even if it was. But she really wants this house. So...that at least I can do for her.
