"E-everyone? Why s-should anyone feel otherwise?"

"They actually said 'you have no value' to you?" Derek shakes his head, "It can't be everyone; I never said that. Or feel that."

[windandrain]

"T-they don't have to. I...I just know." Saori's eyes waver, though, flickering up to Derek. "Y-you don't?"

[rather_be_surfing]

"No. Maybe you're a little shy, but that's all right. I don't see where that would make you worthless or anything like it."

[windandrain]

"B-but I am. I don't do...anything useful, and I'm just p-plain. Everyone here is...so pretty and kind..." She trails off, unsure of how to go on. Because he's still handsome. And she's still no better than a slug.

[rather_be_surfing]

"I think you're pretty," as if that was the only thing that mattered, right? "And you're sweet. I kinda like being around you, in fact."

[windandrain]

"Ehhhhhhhhh?!" Saori exclaimed. "Y-y-you think that?!?!" A handsome man like Derek? Thought she was pretty? A worm like her?! That didn't compute at all. "W-w-why would you say that?!"

"Because you are? Seriously, you are pretty, Saori. Anyone who can't see that is blind."

[windandrain]

"That…how? I am just a worm. A plain, ordinary person with n-nothing pretty about me. A plain nose, ordinary lips a nearly f-flat chest, and plain brown eyes. How am I pretty?" She plainly is stunned by the idea. Maybe she will need convincing…

If this were Disney, this would be about the time Derek would break into a heartfelt song about how beautiful she really was and how the sun rose everyday just to light her path, and how so many young men pined for her grace and beauty to simply be in the same room with her, and oh why can't she see what she really is?

Alas, this is not Disney, and for some reason, they neglected to type cast him into the moody musical loner biker dude with a heart of gold. So.

"Yeah, but your brown eyes are deep, like the shadows of the forest,"

...maybe we can make this work anyway. Herm.

[windandrain]

"Ehhhh?" She quirks her head to one side, a little befuddled. That's...new, and compliments don't add up. "Is-isn't brown boring and plain?"

[rather_be_surfing]

Derek shakes his head.

"Do you think horses are boring? Deer? Cougars? Bears? They're all brown. Trees have brown bark. A lot of seashells have brown in them. Some dolphins do, too. Birds, including a lot of the raptors. Tiger's Eye. Amber stones. Mountains."

See? Not boring.

[windandrain]

"I...alright. I have eyes that aren't boring."

She can buy that. But the rest of her? She gestures at herself, fingers touching her nose, lips, chest, cheeks.

"But the rest of me, I...I"

She turns away, clearly distraught and about to dramatically run away in the rain.

[rather_be_surfing]

"Hey."

He'll reach out to touch her shoulder, try and get her to turn around again.

"Your hair shines in the sunlight--take a look, there's little rainbows in the reflections," he'd always thought that was cool about black hair, the way it reflected light.

"You look like a real person--like someone who smiles a lot and enjoys life. You don't have to look like a model to be beautiful, you know. And besides, do you know what they have to do to themselves to look that way? Take everything off and a lot of them actually look a lot worse than you. I'd rather see someone who looks pretty all by themselves."

[windandrain]

She turns, confusion but...genuine appreciation evident on her face. Someone thought she was pretty? Just by looking like a normal person? Well...that much she could understand.

"I...um...thank you." She blushes profusely, taking a hesitant step closer. Oh, she didn't deserve this, a worm like her. But if he was going to be nice...oh she couldn't help but smile.

Derek will smile back.

"See? And that smile makes you even prettier. Wish I got to see it more."

What are you even talking about, son?

[windandrain]

"Well..."

In a surprising display of sudden moe boldness, Saori stands on tiptoe and kisses Derek on the cheek, and looks up smiling. Since he's so kind and all...maybe he won't mind. Only when that's done she passes right back into a look of somewhat stark apology.

Clearly, Japanese Soap-Writers are insane.

Clearly. But that's all right because the kiss makes him smile.

"Hey, you want to go get some hot chocolate or something. Bet you're cold after being out in the rain."

[windandrain]

"Oh! Y-yes...that would be very nice. If...if you have time."

[rather_be_surfing]

"For you? All the time in the world."

He'll offer his hand for her to take, if she wants.

[windandrain]

"O-oh...so..."

She bites back a 'so romantic.' Of course he doesn't mean it that way. But she does take his hand, letting the warmth draw her closer.

That nets her a grin, a gentle squeeze of the hand and they're off again. Now...who has the best hot chocolate...?

Probably the tea-shop, at least, that's where Saori looks.

Tea shop it is, then. When they get there, Derek will pull out all the stops on every bit of etiquette pounded into his brain, which is actually quite a lot, including holding open doors, offering his arm, holding the chair out for her, etc.

He won't sit until he's sure she's comfortable first.

She is suitably impressed, of course, and takes a seat, setting nervously but quickly so he can sit too.
