What: Building a beach house (not actually on the beach)
When: June 12th - 15th
Where: The Beach
Summary: A house is built, there's a bonfire at night and food provided for those that helped.
Rating: PG-13 for potential language

[After a brief posting the day before on the journal network mentioning the construction project, it's location, and offering a meal in return for work, Adele assists Derek in moving the supplies they've collected since picking the site and in the initial set up. Knowing little to nothing of construction she follows his lead every step of the way, breaking off only to set up water or a quick meal for them in between shifts of planing wood, cutting trim and hammering nails.

It takes time to get it built, but the end of each work day is met with a small or large bonfire, a hot meal, and cool drink.

And at the end there may very well be a house.]

[Loki spends a lot of time quietly contemplating his building materials for the few improvements promised to make for Adele. He paces circles around them, prods them into new configurations, all the while looking very intent about the whole thing.

Then, after much thoughtful frowning and poking, he takes a small flute from the air and plays an odd little tune, during which the components arrange themselves appropriately.

Between little projects, he takes a break, pausing to sit on the beach and drink some sort of refreshing beverage.]

[Derek will stop by at some point or another to see what Loki is doing and how he's coming along. He and Adele had discussed the possibility of asking for magical help, but the hunter had left that to her, since his own ties to the magically inclined were not many or strong just yet.

He'll give the man a polite greeting by way of nod as he sits down, nursing his own glass of water.]

[Loki acknowledges the greeting with the barest movement of his hand; his mind is obviously elsewhere as he continues to pace his circle.

Once he's finished whatever arcane thing he's doing, he pauses to go fetch a glass of water for himself, then sits near Derek with a sigh.]

Complicated stuff. [It's a guess, but people didn't get worn out just by staring at the sand.]

Working in three dimensions is simple. Once you've gotten up to six, it gets a bit... complex.

[He shrugs, though as always he's pleased to have his contributions recognized.]

I had need of a project.

Derek nods, accepting the response, and falls silent, looking over what Loki had been working on.

There isn't anything to speak of there yet, just various bits of wood and the sand scuffed from Loki's feet. Loki follows Derek's gaze. "Laying the foundation is the trickiest bit."

Derek nods again, looking thoughtful.

"Do you have to shift a lot of things?"

He doesn't know how else to ask if Loki has to actually change the fabric of everything, or if it's much simpler than that.

"A bit. Since I want this to be permanent. It would be annoying and boring if I had to fiddle it around every few years. Best to do it properly to begin with."

"Craftsman at heart. Always a good thing."

He had to agree with the sentiment, even if he, like most residents, was well aware that chances were, the house would outlast it's current residents, anyway. The populace had not permanency.

He snorted. "I don't know if that makes me a craftsman. I just like to see things done properly." If he kills something, it stays dead, and so on.

But no one would ever accuse Loki of being a craftsman, a creator, not where he's from. What a curious thought.

[Derek shrugs.]

"You're a craftsman. Part of what makes someone a craftsman is the urge to do it properly, to take the time to make sure it happens in the way you intend it to go, no matter what it is you're shaping."

Hah. I shall add that to my list of titles, then.

You consider yourself a craftsman too?

When I'm cooking or working on something like this, I guess. The job is a little different. I'd call myself a professional on that, but not necessarily a craftsman.

Hm. Interesting demarcation.

But then I don't think I've ever been a professional anything.

If I enjoyed it, maybe I'd consider it an art. But it's a necessity; I'm just an exterminator, to be honest. Not a lot of art to that.

Hah. There is not art in violence, though one could argue that there is in practicing for it.

[He has no illusions about what an ugly, but useful thing violence is.]

[Loki rises back to his feet, finishing the last bit of his drink. Look at this, he and Derek managed to have a cordial conversation.]

Magic is a far more fine at at any rate.

Doesn't surprise me. Even the illusionists back home have to have a certain finesse to pull off their tricks.

I know; that's the point. Tricks need finesse to pull off; I'd imagine the real thing needs it even more.
