Neji's Birthday!

Summary: Hinata and Lee set up a party for Neji!

July 1st and July 2nd

[The time since her arrival had passed by swiftly and before she knew it, Neji's birthday was swiftly approaching. In a rush to make sure that things were done correctly and perfectly for her older cousin, Hinata enlisted the assistance of Lee and Chouji. She knew that her cousin's teammate/best friend/greatest rival would want to lend his help and she didn't think that she could handle the food for the entire party on her own. Besides, she and the Akimichi had discussed cooking together. What better way to do that than for a party?

She'd spent two days of afternoon practice making one of the gifts for Neji, away from the floor where the rest of the shinobi lived. Lucky for her, Kiba lived on the top floor of their building and she'd been able to use the kitchen up there. The rest of the food and sweets had been prepared as normal on the fourth floor.]

July 3rd

[The party is well under way. There are plenty of things to do. Of course, this party is not like Masaomi's recent birthday party. Off to one side, Lee has set up a sparring area for those interested. Hinata is demonstrating tea ceremony with a high blush on her face the entire time, in a formal kimono. Chouji's setting up food on a long banquet table. There's a big table with lots of presents there already for the stoic Hyuuga shinobi.

There are also tables with lovely flowers from Raine-san's shop decorating the top for people to sit and talk.]

I was just saying! He says anything I make is his favorite food and now you're saying the same thing. [Sans the pretty lady but YOU KNOW] It's really nothing special, I'm sure there's people out there that can cook better than me. They were just little cake-things. I was late anyway so it had to be pretty easy to do.

I probably put too much frosting.

Hey, I'll never know! Besides, if you ask this veteran, the more a women denies that her work is anything special, the more special it usually tends to be. Overconfidence is the enemy of success, as I'm sure some old fogey once said.

He has a point.]

There's nothing wrong with confidence as long as you don't get an ego about it. That's just annoying.

That's definitely true. I like confidence.

So, confidence or courage? Which is better?

[..Sheesh, philosophical. His expression sours just a little briefly, but he settles into a little smile]

Courage, obviously.

Really, when it comes down to it, it's not something he feels strongly about. Because these aren't traits he has in abundance if you asked him. Or well, asked him and got an honest answer (you wouldn't). But it's just the more "correct" answer to say courage. So when she parrots him, he just shrugs]

[Funny, she'd say he has plenty of confidence and courage. Almost too much.

Her smile gradually drifts away as she watches everyone.]

There's been a lot of parties recently.

[She noticed Masaomi had one too but figured she didn't know anybody well enough to really show up. It would be awkward. She was all but pressured to go to this one and she still feels out of place, but Hinata and Lee put it on and Hinata had all but been a complete sweetheart to her. The least she could do was show face.

But once she was there she had done a little too much (ruined treats, scolding Naruto, and pulling pranks on the birthday boy later) would Masaomi even WANT that around?]

It's nice. Happy Belated Birthday to you too, right?

Ah, I'm glad you noticed. [Well, it was a week or two ago now, but he itches at the back of his neck, putting on a pleased smile. There's a joke he could make about how he didn't get a gift from her or her in a bikini at the party, but neither is said. Instead, he just seems a little sheepish]

There are a lot though, yeah.

[She would just frown forever at him if he asked for her in a bikini HAHA good thing he didn't and ruin their positive chat]

Sorry I didn't show up. I can make you some of those treats I tried to bring today and you can judge if they're actually good or not.

Does that mean I'm in? Because I'm going to need to prepare my heart for it.

[And he looks forward to it. But rocking back on one foot...]

So, how do you know the birthday boy?

Her small smile shifts into confusion before she looks over the heads for a Hyuuga that isn't the nice one that gave her mochi not that long ago.]

I don't.

But I know Hinata and if such a nice girl is going to throw a party for him, it shouldn't be too bad.

[A little boring but not bad.]

I think he's Naruto's friend too, so I should introduce myself at some point.

Yeah, Hinata-chan's a good girl.

[Though one who is impossible for him to get along with, it seems. Which is probably why his tone goes a little airy. He too glances around, as if looking for her or Neji. Finally, he settles on Neji, and shrugs]

As to Neji-kun though, he's okay.

[fervidity]

[He always sounds like that with girls and Kushina catches it.

'Not a girl' he means.

But she follows his gaze and finds Neji too, who seems to be talking calmly with someone. He LOOKS like one of the normal Hyuuga but he's smiling a little.

Normal Hyuugas don't smile that much. Or at all, from what she remembers.]

Looks... okay.

[generalflirt]

Hah. That's really the word for him. He ranges between friendly and troglodyte with no real medium I've observed. So catch him on a good day and he's just a little stiff, and catch him on a bad day... well, I guess you wouldn't catch him, would you.

[fervidity]

Sounds like a Hyuuga. Hinata is the only normal one I've ever met.

[Though maybe stuffy Hyuuga was normal and nice, sweet Hyuuga is the weird kind.]

He's Naruto's friend though so he can't be bad. Maybe you've just caught him on bad days all the time.

[She can see how Masaomi could push someone's buttons... especially straight-faced, touchy Hyuuga.]
