Luceti Valley - The First Log

Summary: Luceti has become an idyllic and peaceful 50s-esque village. The first few days are just business as usual, right?

August 1st had seemed like an ordinary day in Luceti. But late in the evening, for those night owls who had not turned in yet, they were witness to strange fluctuations in the barrier. Beautiful, really, almost like Luceti had received its own 'Northern Lights', even though it seemed to come from the far east, across the ocean. This ominous light show lasted for all of fifteen minutes before it ceased all together. Skimming the ocean waters, a horde of cultists entered Luceti, cloaked by darkness. Upon reaching the entrance to the tunnels, their leader stepped inside and was followed one by one by his fellow cultists. When the last had entered, the tunnel entrance closed. Across the mountains, the entrance to the tunnels in the village did the same.

Midnight passed without incident, but by three in the morning, the change suddenly came. Minds were altered, forms were changed, and buildings sprang from nowhere.

Much later, on August 2nd, morning settled on a changed village, the new mayor made his way to his mansion with his pair of adorable dobermans at either side of him. The sun shined bright. It was a good day to be a Lucetian.

[The question being, how could he have managed something like that? And not remember any potential instance of getting hurt? The more he thinks about it, he's beginning to doubt his memories more.]

Did I get into a fight yesterday?

[What would have possessed him to get into a fight on Walter's birthday?]

Walter stares at Oscar's door like it should be giving him answers right about now.]

No. I'm pretty sure you were too busy being with me most of yesterday.

[welnares]

[The door gives Walter nothing.

But then it swings open, and Oscar is there with a hand on his face.]

You had fun yesterday, right?

[Translation: I didn't make you punch me, right?]

[blackteriques]

[Walter frowns at him, mostly out of confusion. Then he huffs and crosses his arms.]

That's a stupid question and you know it.

[welnares]

[He thinks about it for a second, gaze drifting, then nods.]

Ah, you're right. That was a stupid question.

[But it makes him content to think about it that way. Oscar straightens, hand dropping, and takes a step forward, intending to walk around and past Walter.]

Let me get cleaned up, and we'll go to work together.

[blackteriques]

[It doesn't take long for Walter to notice what Oscar's hand had been hiding, and he reaches up to grab his shoulder before he actually passes him.]

What is that on your face?

[welnares]

[Though he stops at the grab, all of Oscar's previous concern regarding his face seems to have vanished at this point. He shrugs.]

That's what I wanted to know. But as long as it doesn't stop me from working, it's not a big deal.

[blackteriques]

Not a big deal. [Walter scowls at how Oscar brushes it off, holding on to his shoulder.] You look like you got punched. Or like you smashed your face into your doorknob!

[welnares]

. . . Do you think I did? [With a grave expression, he looks back at the door. Accursed doorknob. It was never good news.] Maybe I did. It would explain everything.

[blackteriques]

[This? This is your best friend looking completely unimpressed, Oscar.]

And now you're telling me you don't even know what happened.

[Well. He'd already said that.]

[welnares]

I really don't remember anything.

[Then it occurs to him, and Oscar snaps his head up.]

Well, I remember a dream.

[blackteriques]

[He repeats Oscar flatly, disbelieving.] A dream.

[welnares]

A dream. [Yes.] Where you punched me. Isn't that strange?

[blackteriques]

Maybe. [He replies mildly, trying to keep an open mind.] It depends on how angry you made me.

[welnares]

You looked upset . . . Ah, wait, does that mean you really would punch me in the face if I made you angry enough? This hurts, you know!

[blackteriques]

I'm not ruling out the possibility just because it's never happened! [He rolls his eyes, finally letting his hand drop back to his side.] And if it hurts, maybe you should put something on it.

[Too bad they probably don't have any ice available.]

[welnares]

[Oh, Walter, he thought he knew you so well.]

Fine – where's the ice? . . . Do we have any left?

[He's pretty sure they used up what few ice cubes they had left on Walter's birthday.]

[blackteriques]

[Best friends know when punching is necessary. Hmph.]

...I think we used the last of it last night.

[And having Oscar walk around with a frozen box of corn to his face would be awful.

It'd be a waste of a perfectly good frozen box of corn.]

[welnares]

Hm . . .

[His face would be a portable microwave in that context, okay.]

I'll just go like this, then. It'll stop hurting later.

[blackteriques]

[...Yeah, no.]

You think you're going to get off that easy? After all the times you've dragged me to the hospital for every little thing?

[welnares]

[??]

That was so you could see Mia. I don't have a girlfriend at the hospital.

[blackteriques]

We didn't go every time to see Mia! [Okay, that may be just a little defensive.]

[welnares]

But we did go to see her.

[Walter's little crush is so cute.]

[blackteriques]

[Sadly, it's not a very "little" crush anymore with how many times they've been going.]

Well-- yes. But that's besides the point!

[welnares]

[And Oscar will abruptly nod right there.]

All right. Let's go – to the hospital.
