Luceti Valley - The First Log

Summary: Luceti has become an idyllic and peaceful 50s-esque village. The first few days are just business as usual, right?

August 1st had seemed like an ordinary day in Luceti. But late in the evening, for those night owls who had not turned in yet, they were witness to strange fluctuations in the barrier. Beautiful, really, almost like Luceti had received its own 'Northern Lights', even though it seemed to come from the far east, across the ocean. This ominous light show lasted for all of fifteen minutes before it ceased all together. Skimming the ocean waters, a horde of cultists entered Luceti, cloaked by darkness. Upon reaching the entrance to the tunnels, their leader stepped inside and was followed one by one by his fellow cultists. When the last had entered, the tunnel entrance closed. Across the mountains, the entrance to the tunnels in the village did the same.

Midnight passed without incident, but by three in the morning, the change suddenly came. Minds were altered, forms were changed, and buildings sprang from nowhere.

Much later, on August 2nd, morning settled on a changed village, the new mayor made his way to his mansion with his pair of adorable dobermans at either side of him. The sun shined bright. It was a good day to be a Lucetian.

[Konan is on her way home from the local high school. She may have started her maternity leave the previous week, but she's still been writing up lesson plans. She has too much pride in how she conducts her class to let some inexperienced substitute have the students use their art class as a free period. No, these will be structured lessons and if she has to write up the lesson plans while she's supposed to be relaxing, so be it.

She doesn't really mind, though. Tired out as the pregnancy is making her, she doesn't like staying in the home all day. She likes to be out and about in the community. She just doesn't have the energy to teach classes all day and then grade work after school.

Spotting Loki in the streets, she greets him with a smile.]

Loki. How have you been lately?

Ah, Konan! [He gives her a smile. He's feeling nicely lubricated thanks to a martini lunch.] Splendid.

You're looking very... [...pregnant.] ...well. Things are coming along as they should, I trust?

Well enough.

[The doctor's given her and the upcoming baby a clean bill of health so far. She was careful to start her maternity leave a little earlier than some might, because of how much trouble she and Nagato had conceiving. She doesn't want to lose this baby. Their daughter, Elie, was adopted when she was a baby.]

I was just returning home after dropping off lesson plans for the substitute teacher to work with.

[complicatedliar]

Good. Can't be much longer now, right? [He hopes so. She looks like she might pop at any moment to his amateur eye. And he knows she's had trouble in the past...]

Should you even be out? I'll walk you home.

About two more months. It's dull staying at home all the time, so I consider walking to the school to drop off my lesson plans a reasonable amount of exercise.

[After handling the busy life of a teacher up until finally deciding it was time to begin her maternity leave, she's finding that she has way too much time on her hands.]

It's a familiar route, and everyone knows me at the high school.

[Not that it will stop her husband and teen daughter from fretting. It's almost funny how the relatives who actually have been through pregnancy and can empathize with the experience are fussing less than those who haven't.]

As long as that? Goodness, I think I'd go a bit mad with the boredom, myself. Well, so long as you haven't been put on bed rest...

[He grins.] I can always come by and entertain you a bit.

Oh, the experience keeps one quite occupied. Especially now that the baby has grown enough to start kicking. I'm convinced the baby will either be a dancer or a soccer player one day.

[Then there's the baby's odd schedule. Apparently, four AM is prime time to start moving around. Really, it's no wonder she's tired all the time lately.]

You would be most welcome to visit, Loki.

I hear there is more money in soccer.

[He grins.] I'll come by on the weekend then. Unfortunately, my mornings tend to be full these days during the week due to work.

That depends entirely on if the child is a boy or a girl. Either way, this child is very energetic.

[Although, that energy is a good thing. It means Konan knows for sure that the baby is alive. She's grateful she has such an extended family readily available to her. There are plenty of relatives who she trusts to watch the new baby for her when she's napping.]

Work has a way of doing that. Will you be staying for dinner?

[complicatedliar]

Mmm, true. Either way dancing is possible. Just not so profitable. [He'd heard that lecture more than enough times himself. It's a bit sickening that he's parroting it now.]

Lunch perhaps. I'm afraid I can't guarantee you a full day if we want to make it a regular appointment.

That's fine. I think lunch and chess would be a pleasant way to spend an early afternoon.

[Peaceful and calm, and yet a mental challenge. Konan appreciates strategy games, and that strategic and analytical mind of hers has helped her in the classroom indirectly. She's got a good sense of which students misbehave because it's in their nature, versus which ones misbehave because they're bored. Her friendship with Loki has taught her the importance of ensuring the bright yet mischievous students always have something to keep them focused.]
