Luceti Valley - The First Log

Summary: Luceti has become an idyllic and peaceful 50s-esque village. The first few days are just business as usual, right?

August 1st had seemed like an ordinary day in Luceti. But late in the evening, for those night owls who had not turned in yet, they were witness to strange fluctuations in the barrier. Beautiful, really, almost like Luceti had received its own 'Northern Lights', even though it seemed to come from the far east, across the ocean. This ominous light show lasted for all of fifteen minutes before it ceased all together. Skimming the ocean waters, a horde of cultists entered Luceti, cloaked by darkness. Upon reaching the entrance to the tunnels, their leader stepped inside and was followed one by one by his fellow cultists. When the last had entered, the tunnel entrance closed. Across the mountains, the entrance to the tunnels in the village did the same.

Midnight passed without incident, but by three in the morning, the change suddenly came. Minds were altered, forms were changed, and buildings sprang from nowhere.

Much later, on August 2nd, morning settled on a changed village, the new mayor made his way to his mansion with his pair of adorable dobermans at either side of him. The sun shined bright. It was a good day to be a Lucetian.

"It isn't being a wimp." Ami was quick to be reassuring about that, at least; and she believed it. It was common sense instead, to her. "If you come right away, you'll be at your best again more quickly, too."

The bruises did look new. She went through the usual litany of questions: how bad did he rate his pain, was there anything in his medical history that would be relevant, such as medications he was taking or allergic to, or old injuries the new ones may have impacted.

"I can hope."

He answered the questions as best he could. The pain was worst when he breathed in, very sharp and stabbing, an 8/10. No medications being taken, no allergies, no relevant medical history.

That wasn't the most promising. She'd have liked to be able to simply send him on his way, with nothing worse than the bruises, some painkillers, and advice to rest.

Instead, she told him, "I'd like to take an x-ray." It sounded like there was a possibility something was broken; she'd rather not assume otherwise.

"I had a terrible feeling you'd say that." Loki gave her a crooked smile. "Whatever the doctor orders."

"You're a very cooperative patient," Ami remarked. To tell the truth, that always made things easier, but somehow with Loki it felt like he was treating it all as something of a joke.

"If something is broken, though, I want to be sure, and I want to be sure to treat it correctly. So we'll go from the results of the x-rays."

"If nothing is broken," she went on, "I'll just give you a prescription to help with the pain, and I'll want to follow up with more visits later either way."

"If I hadn't wanted to listen to a doctor, I wouldn't have come here in the first place," Loki said. "I'll hope nothing is broken, though. That sounds annoying." He got stiffly to his feet.

"I'm afraid if it is, you'll need rest for at least six weeks or so." It would probably be a good idea for Loki to think about that and plan for it now - just in case. "You should consider that might be a possibility."

"What exactly do you mean by rest?" he asked. "I can't really take that sort of time away from my practice."

As a lawyer, Loki's work wasn't physically strenuous. He would usually be able to stay immobile as long as he stayed sitting upright. (Ami doubted he'd object to making others do the running around for any papers or research or documents he needed for awhile.) So her answer was carefully framed with that in mind, a mixture of warning and concession.

"Since it isn't physically demanding, you could probably still go to work as long as the pain isn't too great," she said. "However, if you do that and push yourself too hard, you'll be prone to re-injuring yourself, perhaps even worse. If you choose not to miss work, please be very careful about what you do."

"I'll sit at my desk and be utterly boring. That's what I normally do anyway." But no tennis or golf for a while. That was annoying. Maybe he would catch up on his reading finally. If he didn't spend the time on drinking.

Definitely no tennis or golf. That would be the quickest way to complications.

Ami gives Loki a somewhat sympathetic smile. For all that she doesn't mind desk work, she definitely understands disliking the feeling of not being productive, not being as active, as she wants. It's why she's known for rarely taking holidays or vacations, or even breaks.

"It won't be for too long," she says, though Loki might differ about whether the aforementioned several weeks is too long or not.

"I hope not indeed. The firm won't run itself."

Really gee just wants to get this over with without having other health matters brought up. These days everyone seems obsessed with his eating, sleeping, and drinking habits.

Ami's learned she's not going to separate Loki from alcohol, or convince him to sleep more when she doesn't, either.

"This is all premature anyway," she admits. "Let's start with the x-ray. I'd like to schedule a time as soon as possible. Is today alright?"

"Today is fine. I'd rather just get this done with so I can get back to work and focus on it."

Or try. He hasn't really been able to focus on anything lately. But at least he has a nice thing to be distracted by now, if he can chase gloomier thoughts away.

"Good." It's the answer she'd prefer anyway. It avoids Loki running around for longer with his injuries, making them worse and risking even permanent damage.

"I'll write you the referral for the x-rays immediately, and I'd like to see you again when the results come back." She begins to jot something down, but she keeps her attention on their conversation as well.

"All right. Shouldn't take too long." He has enough money that people don't tend top keep him waiting if he's in a hurry. And he wants to get back to work. Well... he wants to get back to Tony's office. And stop thinking about all of this nonsense.

It was a deer. A deer ran in front of his car. He hates that tinny is making this such a thing.

"No, we understand how busy you are." What she means is she understands Loki will consider getting back to work the most important thing. (The other truth is that right now, with discontent brewing... lawyers may really be needed, by a lot of people, soon. Many of them probably can't afford Loki, but...)
