Luceti Valley - The First Log

Summary: Luceti has become an idyllic and peaceful 50s-esque village. The first few days are just business as usual, right?

August 1st had seemed like an ordinary day in Luceti. But late in the evening, for those night owls who had not turned in yet, they were witness to strange fluctuations in the barrier. Beautiful, really, almost like Luceti had received its own 'Northern Lights', even though it seemed to come from the far east, across the ocean. This ominous light show lasted for all of fifteen minutes before it ceased all together. Skimming the ocean waters, a horde of cultists entered Luceti, cloaked by darkness. Upon reaching the entrance to the tunnels, their leader stepped inside and was followed one by one by his fellow cultists. When the last had entered, the tunnel entrance closed. Across the mountains, the entrance to the tunnels in the village did the same.

Midnight passed without incident, but by three in the morning, the change suddenly came. Minds were altered, forms were changed, and buildings sprang from nowhere.

Much later, on August 2nd, morning settled on a changed village, the new mayor made his way to his mansion with his pair of adorable dobermans at either side of him. The sun shined bright. It was a good day to be a Lucetian.

Like my best friend, Bulla. [She turns up her nose slightly. This conversation is beneath her. Not to mention uncomfortable. Please don't make her think about her extreme lack of social life in depth, Korra.]

[precipitous]

And? Is that all? [ Korra drawls. There were few things she could hold over her sister's head; having more friends was one of them. ]

[maximoff_girl]

This conversation is crass. It's-- vulgar to talk about people like this. [That, or you just don't have any friends, Wanda.]

[precipitous]

Why? It's not like we're spreading rumors or anything. [ She pauses. ] Though, you know, Crystal has been getting pretty close to the boss lately...

[maximoff_girl]

She's been-- Korra! No! You can't-- you can't allow that sort of thing to happen! She's still just a kid. [She's not THAT much younger than you, Wanda. The unspoken implication of Wanda's concern is "We don't want ANOTHER of us going street-rat.] Don't you want better for her?

[precipitous]

[ Korra flips onto her stomach, giving Wanda a look. ]

What do you mean, 'want better'? There's nothing wrong with hanging out my crowd!

[maximoff_girl]

Oh, sure, nothing at all. Right. Nothing wrong with skipping school and living up to every negative expectation people have about our class. [She narrows her eyes.] We're better than that, Korra. I wish you could see it for yourself.

[precipitous]

[ Ugh. Not this again. ] I don't care what other people think. I'm happy.

[maximoff_girl]

Well, you definitely don't care about what Mother and Father think, because in addition to being "happy" [oh, doesn't THAT word just drip sarcasm] you're a disappointment.

[precipitous]

[ Oh, no, she's not gonna take that. ]

They're not disappointed in me! If they're disappointed in anyone, it's you!

[maximoff_girl]

They are not! [Wanda somehow manages to emphasize every word in that sentence as if it's the most important one.] I go to school and get good grades. I keep my appearance clean and modest. I earn my own spending money-- earn it, by working for it, not stealing it! I help out Aunt Makie, and I do what I can to help lift our family's station. What do you do? Nothing. Nothing but make them worry. You should be ashamed. [Wanda has turned full round in her chair, and is clutching her pencil tightly in her fist.]

[precipitous]

[ Korra is nearly snarling at this point, particularly because part of her knows Wanda has a point. She's always been a disappointment to her parents, so she hadn't tried to be any better than that. What did anyone expect of her, anyway?

But she knew the trouble she'd get into if she got into a fight with her, and at the moment, Korra didn't want to disappoint her parents further. ]

I don't have time for this. [ Korra throws herself to her feet, backing towards the window. ]

[maximoff_girl]

That's right. I'm sure you've got a lot of delinquency to catch up on. [Wanda sneers back, pursing her lips. Her stomach feels twisty, and part of her knows she's being way too harsh with her sister. She feels bad, cutting her with words like this, but she doesn't really know how to stop. It's not like she could just apologize or anything-- what person in their right mind would do something as outlandish as that?]

[precipitous]

And you've got a lot of lonesome brooding to do, right? [ Korra gives her sister one last nasty look as she lifts her legs out the window. ]

[maximoff_girl]

I don't brood. [You totally brood, Wanda. You come from a long line of brooders. You're a card-caring member of the broody bunch.] And I'm not lonesome! [Wanda's not the only one who can wield the truth like a razor, clearly. She knows she should stop Korra. Apologize and get her to come back in. Instead, she turns back to her desk, trying to focus on her work again. ]
