Luceti Valley - The First Log

Summary: Luceti has become an idyllic and peaceful 50s-esque village. The first few days are just business as usual, right?

August 1st had seemed like an ordinary day in Luceti. But late in the evening, for those night owls who had not turned in yet, they were witness to strange fluctuations in the barrier. Beautiful, really, almost like Luceti had received its own 'Northern Lights', even though it seemed to come from the far east, across the ocean. This ominous light show lasted for all of fifteen minutes before it ceased all together. Skimming the ocean waters, a horde of cultists entered Luceti, cloaked by darkness. Upon reaching the entrance to the tunnels, their leader stepped inside and was followed one by one by his fellow cultists. When the last had entered, the tunnel entrance closed. Across the mountains, the entrance to the tunnels in the village did the same.

Midnight passed without incident, but by three in the morning, the change suddenly came. Minds were altered, forms were changed, and buildings sprang from nowhere.

Much later, on August 2nd, morning settled on a changed village, the new mayor made his way to his mansion with his pair of adorable dobermans at either side of him. The sun shined bright. It was a good day to be a Lucetian.

[ She glances over. ] Really? There's no one thing you enjoy making more than others?

[imatreenow]

Not really. [Another tight shrug. Then he changes his mind, because maybe if he gives an answer, she'll stop asking.] ...Bread. [Reluctant, as if anything he says is telling her too much.]

[degleamed]

Oh? What kind of bread is your favorite?

[ She always has more questions. ]

[imatreenow]

[He had just reached for a stack of pans on which to begin placing the cut-out cookie dough shapes, when he finally snaps his gaze her way. Enough of her questions - time for a few of his own.]

Why do you even work here? You're family's rich, aren't they?

[degleamed]

[ Her lips twitch, but she doesn't quite frown. It's the truth, after all. ]

Yes, they are. But I like to work. It's good for the soul.

[imatreenow]

[He shoves the stack of pans onto the counter more loudly than he meant to, but he doesn't care.]

So what you're saying is that you do this for fun. [Definitely an accusation, edged sharply with disgust, distrust for everything he thinks she stands for.]

[degleamed]

I do it because I enjoy it. I know most people in my station wouldn't, but...I'm not like them. [ She sighs. ] Is there something wrong with that?

[imatreenow]

My family does this to live. [He levels her with a glare.] We do it because we need money - but I guess you wouldn't understand anything like that.

[He turns back to his work, moving the dough shapes to the tray, lining them up in a neat array, every movement brisk.]

[degleamed]

No, I wouldn't. [ And she was willing to admit it, too. She was an outsider looking in, but that didn't mean she didn't want to help. ] But if it makes you feel any better, I funnel all my wages back into the orphanage in Lowtown.

[imatreenow]

[That will actually silence him for a few seconds, but he's quick to find the loopholes with a sneer.] That must make you look really good. [That has to be why, right?] Does it help you sleep at night?

[degleamed]

Not when I think about the ways my father tries to marginalize the lower classes. [ She sighs, but she can't really blame him for his attitude. ] I know it must be difficult to hear, but I'm on your side.

[imatreenow]

...Whatever. [He's wadding up the leftover dough with more violence than is needed. The back of his mind buzzes, wondering if what she says is true - but he won't let her think that he'll budge on his judgment of her.]

[degleamed]

[ She notices the way he's attacking the dough, and she smiles slightly. ]

You're not supposed to fight it, you know. Work with it instead. [ She means the dough, but she could be referring to more. ]

[imatreenow]

[He hunches his shoulders against her.] I know what I'm doing. [Without looking up, he grabs the rolling pin again and rubs flour onto its surface.]

[degleamed]

I know you do. I was just offering a suggestion.

[imatreenow]

Nobody asked you. [AGGRESSIVELY ROLLS OUT COOKIE DOUGH. If he's more vitriolic than usual, it might be to cover up his confusion regarding her motives.]

[degleamed]

I suppose not. But I offered it all the same.
