Luceti Valley - The Second Log

Luceti Valley continued in its own merry little way. The rich got richer, the poor got poorer. A new tax hike had ensured increasing animosity between both groups, despite the protests of the every charitable Lord Mayor. But on the sixth day, something happens and people begin to notice things are unusual. Idle thoughts that if thought about too much is bound to get you a visit to the police station for an hour or so. Or worse, it may just get you committed.

Meanwhile, the asylum continues to gain more and more patients. Those that are trapped there will find escaping difficult, but there may be more to this place than they first assumed...

On the tenth, battle breaks out across Luceti Valley. People begin to exhibit powers and abilities they didn't know they had. The police begin rounding up these people to lock up. If they resist, its bound to come to blows. Even though no one has regained their memories of their true self yet, it becomes apparent that some trickery is afoot, even if they might not know the source or why.


Note: This is the second log! There will be a third and final event log for the aftermath. There will also be two separate logs specifically for finding John and defeating Zompano. For those of you that signed up, we'll be randomizing the results and replying to the selected characters later tonight. In the meantime, keep enjoying the event! [So he hadn't guessed wrong at least.] I... have been getting impressions of people, of things, that haven't been... fitting to this city. My job doesn't appeal as it once did.

And I didn't recognize my daughter the other day.

[That synced with his own mindset, to a degree.]

I don't remember most of yesterday and parts of the day before. What I do remember...is wrong.

[He nodded, looking more than a little unsettled.] I still recognize my wife, unwaveringly know her... but my sister...

I'm not the only one this way. I've seen people, around the city, with a look in their eyes that says they feel like something is wrong. More than one of those were grabbed by the police.

I don't like that. I think it's wrong.

That's because it is wrong.

[Barnaby had seen those people as well throughout the parts of his memory that were there. His sister was absolutely distressed by the very thought, and he knew that he wouldn't forget the haunted look in Kakashi's eyes anytime soon.]

Then we need to fight back, or get ready to do so. [He inclined his head, looking over at him.]

I don't want them to come after my family Barnaby, I won't let them. I can't be the only one feeling that way... so if you know anyone else having trouble like us, tell them to talk to me, I'll coordinate some sort of effort. At the very least I'll help people know what to watch for to keep out of sight, I'm apparently rather good at that.

There's a few, but...

[He wanted to protect what was important to him, first and foremost. That just happened to include his sense of justice, but that also included his family. As much as he knew of his sister's discontent, he wanted to keep her out of this.

They were both the elder siblings. They needed to watch from different fronts, whether they coordinated or not. He trusted Saori to watch the twins.]

I'll see what I can do. I don't plan on getting too heavily involved...

[Although he knew he would. Somehow, he knew it was unavoidable.]

[He inclined his head and gave him a wry smile.] It might be okay if things don't get worse... but I have the sense that things always get worse.

That's just what life does I fear. [He shook his head.]

I just want everyone to be careful.

[It wasn't a hunch for Barnaby. It was a certainty that he was trying to ignore. The strategic detainment of people who looked at the world differently than they had only days before and the subtle lockdown that was happening all over town kept him on alert-- nevermind the fact that he didn't even know how they knew. He never bothered to observe the crowd on this level before....

Something was missing. Some tool, something that helped him better calculate, organize, and analyze the data he was observing. Somehow his glasses bothered him a little.]

As do I.

[His voice was low, edged in his own uncertainty.]

Something is going to happen. I just don't know what, and I plan to find out.

I... share the sentiment. I get the sense I've lived through something like this before. [He looked to the street with a frown.]

Hiding and gathering information has been coming to me with frightening ease.

As has the odd detail on just how to handle an enemy group if they haven't spotted you.

So I suppose I'll be useful, if things go badly.

[Barnaby smirked, riding on a wave of disordered emotions that he didn't recognize. He had none of the things that Nagato described...just an odd obsession, determination, and ice-like clarity of mind that he didn't recognize. He could almost contain and restrict himself to the small scale, like protecting his family.

Almost.]

I suppose we'll have to work together then, Nagato.

Of course. [There was a pause, and he looked back to him, an odd look on his face, both contemplative and rather intense.]

I feel like I'm rather... limited right now when I'm not used to being so, so having someone I can trust with me? Very appreciated.

[Though, something in the back of his mind said it wasn't so much trust as confidence, but he quickly hushed that.]

Agreed.

[He recognized the sentiment echoed within himself. Having never done anything like this in his life, Barnaby hesitated to move on his own. Having a teammate was more...comforting.

He needed someone that he could trust, and someone who would put their trust in him.]

I'll do what I can, even though I don't even know what that is yet. I...I will.

[He gave a sharp nod in understanding. He felt that way too.]

When we know, we'll find each other and move forward from there. So far, you're the best equipped person with things going on in this mess.

[He flashed him a small smile.]

Lucky to have you in the family, mm? Even if it's a more recent thing compared to some.

I suppose so...

[Although he didn't understand what Nagato meant by him being the best equipped for this task.]

[Mostly your willingness to put yourself forward. Most others he's spoken to have been far more reluctant. So far.]

Thank you. Even if it's due to your own experience, it's a relief to not be met with disbelief. Not that I've mentioned this to many, of course.

[The need to try was simply instinct, as if he had been doing this kind of thing all of his life. 'As long as there is a chance...'

He couldn't finish the sentence. Not yet, but soon. Somehow, he knew that.]

Honestly, I'm not sure what to believe. But, there isn't much choice but to trust what people to believe is true at this point, especially when there are so many who seem to feel the same.

Do you know how many people I've counted that were taken by the police today? There's clearly something happening in this town. I plan to find out what.

Let me know what you find. I've been getting a feel for exactly how many angles there are to get to where everyone's been taken. More than one got dumped into the asylum instead of jail, did you know that? Interesting that they apparently aren't deemed safe to return to the general populace.

[And all the more reason he'd been skulking around in a very un-professor-like way.]

I haven't been paying much attention to the asylum...

[His focus had been elsewhere, on details that were more important to him. It was why he was hanging out on rooftops in a very un-grad student kind of way.]

I wanted to be sure of the locations in case they targeted any family. We don't exactly have a small number of people that have that qualifier, if you count everyone attached to Kushina and myself. Or you.

[He nodded once, clearly satisfied with that. He was closer to some than others, it felt, and not the ones he thought he should be for a reason he couldn't pin down.]

...I understand.

[Protection was on his mind as well, but in a roundabout way. He wouldn't be able to protect anyone if he was blind to the situation.

It was unacceptable.]

[Something about his tone drew his attention, and he studied them.]

I suspect we're not using the same methods, are we? Between the two of us then... everyone should be safe, right?

You work through your channels and I'll work through mine. There's bound to be a place where we meet in the middle.

Gladly. [He inclined his head to him slightly.]

I do hope we find the other has taken a venue of equal value.

[He tilted his head, watching him, then finally gave a crisp nod.]
