Summary: So you remember all those times Luceti was transformed into Luceti Land? Welcome to Malnosso World, Luceti Land's bigger, cooler brother. Be sure to keep all hands inside the rides at all times, and refer to your map if you get lost. Trust me, you'll get lost.

I... never actually learned how to swim. It was not part of the Academy curriculum.

[They're in space, right? Not exactly needed.]

It's a skill I think everyone should learn. It can be very important.

If you'd like, I could help show you a little. [And bonus, it's pretty guaranteed safety with her water rescue training.]

[Spock blinked at her. She wanted to teach a Vulcan how to swim?]

[Ami evidently does not see why this would be a difficulty at all.]

[Spock hesitates... and looks between her and the water.]

Is it cold?


[Yeah, he has his priorities.]

No, I think it must be heated. [She may have a slightly different definition of cold, but at least to her, it felt pleasant enough when she was in the water earlier.] This would be a good chance to try it.

[spohkh]

Indeed....

[Spock looks around, and sure enough there's a place to change.
Drat.]

[While she waits for Spock, Ami takes a moment to remove her cover and fold it neatly to set it aside with her book. This leaves her in her bathing suit, but as everyone else is in the same, she decides not to be (overly) embarrassed.]

[Spock comes back a few minutes later, looking rather uncomfortable in a blue pair of swimming trunks.
He had considered wearing the wet suit... perhaps that should have been what he went for.]

What is my first lesson?

First of all, I think it's better if we stay by the shallow part of the pool for now. [It's where she'd start with anyone, because it's much easier to be somewhere you can easily just stand up again if anything at all goes wrong.]

[spohkh]

Very well.

[Spock steps towards the pool.. and waits at the edge for Ami. His toes are just out of reach from the water.]

Just step down the stairs and get used to the water first. [She follows her own advice, though she doesn't seem to display any hesitation herself. She seems to feel that heading right in is the best way for Spock to start, too.]

[Spock hesitated for a moment longer.... then managed to dip a foot inside.
He shivered upon contact, but tried not to show how uncomfortable he was as he climbed into the water. There...

...waist deep.


Cold.
The Vulcan quirked an eyebrow at Ami.]

Is it alright? [For all the effort, that calm pause has a mark of someone trying to adjust, and not necessarily enjoying it.]

It might feel different at first, but you'll get used to it.

['Different' was a bit of an understatement, and to say it was 'cold' would be way too obvious.
Spock merely nodded an affirmative and slowly walked around. It was very...

...wet.]

It is quite possible that I will have more difficulty swimming than the average human. As a Vulcan, my bone density is quite a bit heavier.

It should still be possible. [And if not, at least they;re still at the shallow part of the pool and she shouldn't have trouble helping him if something goes wrong.]

Start by getting used to it. Get your head wet while you're still standing on the bottom.

[Spock stares at the water.
Get used to it? Easier said than done as the Vulcan slowly lowers himself into the water, now up to his neck.]

Have you always enjoyed swimming?

Mm. My father taught me when I was young. He said it was a good skill to learn, and to help one relax.

[spohkh]

[Spock tilted his head. Ami didn't talk much about her father.]

Relax? Curious... I suppose the added buoyancy would affect some individuals that way. Floating requires a certain amount of trust... yes?

I guess so. I know the water will hold me up. [She probably intends this to be understood entirely scientifically, but it's also something deeper with her. She trusts the water in a way she's rarely, if ever, been able to trust people.]

[spohkh]

[Spock moves his hands through the water gingerly, trying to regulate his body temperature....

...but his lips were still turning an olive shade of green.]

Do you know an individual by the name of Fenimore? [Spock's teeth might be starting to chatter.]

[Spock that does not look right...]

Is it really alright to stay in the water after all? [Maybe it would be better to talk about Fenimore, who she unfortunately doesn't know, after warming up.]

P-perhaps if this i-is to be attempted again, other p-precautions sh-should be taken.
[Like a wet-suit. The Vulcan walked out of the pool, immediately reaching for a towel, trying to get warm.]

[Definitely a wet suit. But all Ami has to offer is an extra towel. She holds it out a bit uncertainly for Spock to take.]

[spohkh]

[Spock is hesitant, but he takes her towel gratefully, warming up as he dries.]

I believe I can now confidently say why Vulcans do not swim.
