Who: Everybody!
What: A field trip for the entirety of Luceti!
When: October 27th, until the end of November 2nd
Where: The Happiest Place on the Moon, Malnosso World!
Summary: So you remember all those times Luceti was transformed into Luceti Land? Welcome to Malnosso World, Luceti Land's bigger, cooler brother. Be sure to keep all hands inside the rides at all times, and refer to your map if you get lost. Trust me, you'll get lost.

Davis had an extra button on his uniform, just like Kovan Foster did before him. MSF was proudly emblazoned on his shoulders, but for the first time in his career, he was actually just security. It was a rare day the MSF had the time to actually do what their name indicated they were supposed to do. But what better choice than the man with the most experience with the enclosures?

Davis can be found in all areas of the park, patrolling the area and occasionally talking to people like they're old friends, whether they're from enclosures or members of the Malnosso. Regardless of where he is, he always ends up at every food stall, to pick up popcorn, cotton candy, sodas, hot dogs, or whatever other food is available. For a man who used to be fine with black coffee and stale biscuits, his diet has certainly taken a curious upgrade. And for once, he seems to actually be in a good mood.

Katara recognized Davis in passing, as her nerves about the place where they were had her scanning the faces and uniforms of the MSF. Considering that the last time she had seen him he hadn't been looking very well at all - in fact, she'd had to heal him, he was looking much better.

Part of Katara really didn't want anything more to do with any of the Malnosso, ever. But she also really wanted to find out what was going on, and since he was turning away from a food stall, she decided it didn't hurt to ask.

Katara approached him, "Specialist Davis?"

When Davis turned around, it was with a large chocolate milkshake with whipped cream. A cherry topped it all. When he looked up to talk to her, there was still whipped cream atop his lip. He didn't seem to realize.

"That's me." He paused as he looked her over. Recognition hit him and there was the smallest trace of a smile. "And you'd be Katara, right? From Luceti."

"Of the Southern Water Tribe," she said, but it was said with a small smile and a light correction all told. She assumed that he remembered just because she'd healed him, but he'd been so confused, even towards the end. "But that's right. You're looking better."

The problem was, really, that she liked Davis. That was what had brought her over to help him first. It was only the horrible, persistent feeling that she was being lied to or deceived that had made her want to walk away. She didn't understand how someone who seemed so straightforward could work for people like this.

"I'm glad."

He nodded at the correction, but it was clear it didn't seem to mean a whole lot to him. It was just a fact of the world that after enough time, you stop being identified by your world and you start being identified by other things instead.

"So am I. I've got a lot of healers to thank for that. Of course, you were the nicest one in that number."

Yeah, well, screw your world's expectations. Whether she was here one year more or a thousand years more, Katara was determined that her home was the only place she would ever be from. 8|

She really didn't know how to deal well with compliments. That was one thing that hadn't changed about her either. "Thank you," she said, smiling a little wryly. She really hadn't been that nice. She wondered if that was a comment on his other healers. "I was hoping you could tell me what we're all doing here? If there was an invitation explaining all that, it got lost in the mail."

He shook his head. "That's what I've been hearing from Kin'cora, Excenn, and Quell. Somehow the invitation never made it on the network. Some intern missed a few checkboxes when hitting the invitations." This fact had him somewhat amused, but there was a hint of annoyance as well. He bristled at incompetence in the organization.

"As for the why? It's those guys."

He nodded at a group across the path from them. There were some soldiers there, but they were off duty. One was a mother with her husband and a child that was clearly not theirs and they looked happy and content. Whole, even.

"Tyrus," he continued. "They've reached the end. This is a little extravagant. I didn't get anything like this back when it came for me. But the organization is looking for any reason to celebrate, these days."

Katara wasn't entirely sure she believed his discription about it being an intern... that just sounded ridiculous. But it was increasingly evidant that this wasn't done in order to entrap them or hurt them any worse than what was done in their own enclosures.

She looked where he nodded and quietly observed the family before turning back to Davis, "The end of what? What are you celebrating?"

"I'm not celebrating. They're celebrating the end of being in Tyrus." When he looked back at the family, his expression hardened. Envy them? Hardly. He pitied them.

"Not that there's much to celebrate there."

Katara raised one eyebrow at the difference. He'd said the organization was celebrating -- what, was he telling her he wasn't part of it anymore? Her gaze flickered to the shiny row of buttons on his chest. That seemed... unlikely.

"So they're being integrated into the Malnosso. Is that the goal for all the enclosures?" It sure seemed like it, first with the missions and then with Carol and now Alice... if that was the case, no wonder the Organization seemed like such a mess. How could you work side-by-side against the same people who had treated you as inhuman for so long? Not well, was her guess. Not well at all.

"The goal is for there to be no one left in the enclosure to be integrated. Doesn't always work that way."

"Because of something the scientists do, or because the people in the enclosures are here for such a 'short time?'"

Davis seemed to be unsure how much he wanted to say. But after a moment of staring at her, he rolled back his shoulders and started talking.

"Both. Your first year? That's your best chance of getting out of here. And then it dips after that. More and more and more. Eventually you reach a point where there ain't no going back. People like me end up at that point. Or Carol. Or anyone you see working here that isn't packing a pair of giant wings. Once you reach that point, there's no reason for you to be in an enclosure. You're deemed no longer viable for testing and your cast into the open world and you have to adapt and deal with it. That's what happened to Tyrus. It's a celebration, sure. But the only reason the scientists are happy is because they'll be able to reset the enclosure and start over again and hope for a winner this time."

Katara looked back over to the family. No longer viable for testing meant that they were probably stuck here. Their hope for going home became the same hope as anyone else's -- a randomly applied shift on the people that had occupied the same testing ground as they once had. Maybe it wouldn't be so different to work side-by-side along the people who had once tortured them after all. They'd be doing the same thing.

At any cost.

"How many people are being integrated from Tyrus?" Katara asked in a quiet voice.

"Tyrus was one of the bigger ones. Over eight thousand, last I heard. A third of them are already in the MSF. More are going to sign up after this."

"Eight thousand..." She looked back at Davis, sober. "Out of how many?"

She had been here for almost four years. If what he said was true, than her window of opportunity for going home was closing rapidly. She did not want to be here anymore; Katara desperately wanted to go home.

But if she remained, if Luceti ever 'graduated,' could she join with the MSF? Work with them? She wouldn't join the Cultists -- never. But she could not see herself working with the Malnosso either. She would have to find another way.

He shrugged. "Out of how many that had ever been there? A lot of people came and went through that place. At least ten times that amount were sent packing beforehand. I don't have the numbers, myself. That's more Carol's field."

Katara nodded quietly. So they didn't even have a percentage of how many people got to leave. "I see."

"...how long has this been here? This park?"

[ ... What? You know, he was not expecting to see this guy in line for cotton candy, but there he is. Masaomi has popcorn in hand and Linda on his shoulder, but he was not expecting to see Davis as a fan of sugary sweets, for some reason. It might be whatever memories he's seen of him on mission or drafts but mostly it's just not part of the image. Still, the guy isn't talking to anyone and he's in line, so... might as well bug him]

Ho, Davis-san. I didn't expect to see you here.

[Davis has a mouth full of cotton candy when he spots Masaomi. It takes a moment for him to let it melt on his tongue so he can swallow it. Subtly he removes a piece from his cheek.]

Here specifically or just the park in general?

Bit of both. Last we heard, that war out there wasn't going well.

[So sparing someone like him seems farfetched, right? Right? ... Less than the cotton candy though that's just silly]

That was before the bomb. Times are changing. Enough that for once, we're doing actual security.

[He casually taps the S on the MSF letters on his chest. And then he stuffs a small piece of cotton candy into his mouth.]

That changed things that quickly?

[ In spite of himself, he is surprised by that one. Linda doesn't follow why he is surprised, but she does get that he is and ends up looking between the two from his shoulder but at least doesn't comment on that.]

Sheesh, I guess that made a nice call.
