[A theme park was something he hadn't been to in ages. Ever since he was a child, at least. So even loitering between rides was amusing for him on account of all the vendor food laid out. Sam hadn't known Eugene back when this was his career, a lifestyle he'd had to peek into and write about, making interesting to others.

Normally, he would upturn his nose at the food vendors, but it had been so long since he'd had cotton candy that he broke a few of his own rules and grabbed some. And by some, it meant he brought some back for Sam to enjoy as well. Blue cotton candy, because the pink one had the hideous effect of making his mouth too pink.

Blue did sort of remind him of zoms, however.]

Y'think we should prove our badassery at the haunted mansion? I'm not really feeling like a repeat of Halloween Land...

[He grimaced at the mention of Halloween land and the zombies and their unfortunate incident there.]

Yeah, maybe not? Is it zombie free at least? I don't care what they say, those things can't be safe.

[He takes the offered candy floss and takes a handful, grinning as the sugar sticks to his tongue.]

[It wasn't unfortunate, they'd done just as the handbook told them to. Janine would be proud of them.]

Not sure if it's zom free, but if we go, then I guarantee it will become zom free.

[the grin he gave Sam was unrepentant, then became a soft chuckle as he saw the sugar stick to his tongue]

You seem more nervous than usual, Sam. What's up? Halloween land shook you up that bad?

We are kind of the experts when it comes to that, yeah.

[He shrugs at the question, swallowing the sugar gunk the candyfloss had become.]

I'm not nervous just... appropriately wary.

Appropriately wary-- Sam, I have seen you in some fairly tense situations. You're a bit... more tense.

[He narrowed his eyes a little, unable to find a more appropriate term to describe how Sam had become since he'd arrived. The way that Jack acted a bit oddly nearby him didn't miss his notice as well. But he was going to find out what it was, one way or another]

... Have I done something to make you mad? Y'know I kind of do that without thinking or meaning to-- most of the time.

Our entire lives are tense situations right now. I'm not tense. I'm fine.

[He frowns a little at the questioning and shakes his head.]

No. No! You haven't done anything.

[Eugene didn't let up on his scrutiny as he watched Sam. Tense... maybe not as tense as back in Abel township. But they all had their reasons, and he had the distinct impression he was being kept in the dark for some reason.]

...Fine.

[It wasn't, his tone relayed that]

Anyway. So do you have aquaman trunks or did you leave that back at uni?

[He hunched his shoulders at that response, just for a moment. Right Eugene, not doing anything to reassure him here.]

Hey! That- that was one time! Because my girlfriend really liked Aquaman.

Novelty clothing, y'know. You can't wear something once like that and throw it out. There's got to be good memories attached to it?

[Sorry, Sam, but if he's going to be kept in the dark about important discussions, he's going to be angry. And those hunched shoulders simply confirmed for him that he was being left out, and that hurt more than he expected it to. Which was only going to make him more distant and grumpy.]

I mean, how do you even dispose of those things? Did she get a chance to see them? They've got to be tucked away somewhere.

It was a fun convention I guess. I mean, it was a few years ago now, when I first started uni.

[But let's face it, it hadn't exactly been a long-term relationship.]

Yeah, I'm sure they're still in my cupboard in my room at university. Maybe some lucky person from another settlement looted them or something.

You don't feel weird knowing someone else might be wearing your underwear?

[Yeah, he might as well give Sam his own cotton candy, he wasn't keen on eating it now]

Can't eat the blue stuff, reminds me of zoms with how it stains your mouth.

Well, considering back home I'm probably wearing someone else's underwear... I try not to think about it.

They probably nicked my comics too.

[He'd had a really nice little collection too. Some of them had even had alternate covers.

He took the candy floss and had a handful halfway to his mouth only for Eugene to say that.]

Seriously? You had to say that. Ugh.

Yes, but those are the generic knock-off types, and if you're lucky, you've got a set.

[He did have to say it. Consider it repayment for avoiding the issue. He snickered softly, watching Sam]

Consider it my duty to keep you on the straight and narrow path for gourmet food.

Why this sudden interest in my underwear Eugene?

[He gave him a huffy look and then stubbornly shoved a glob of candyfloss into his mouth.]

I didn't eat gourmet food before the end of the world. Why would I start now?

Because you're in a safer... relatively speaking, place that doesn't have zoms that are out to get your brains?

[both his brows rose and he smiled a little when he saw Sam shove that into his mouth, amused at how he could look so cute and stubborn all at the same time.]

A guy can dream, right?

Yeah but... it's just underwear. And you and Jack are... y'know.

[He's really confused by now.]

I was a student! Not a food critic, Gene.

Oh, sorry I wasn't... talking about underwear anymore, I was answering why you should start eating gourmet food now. But me and Jack are what...? Together?

[Right, he wasn't asking Sam about Jack. For whatever reason. He had hoped the underwear and food conversation would steer away from his lingering curiosity.]

Students can be food critics. Anyone can be a food critic. I'm a journalist and a food critic. Or I was. Anyway, speaking of, what does Simon cook-- or do you cook?

Oh. Oh! Right. Sorry. I got confused.

[And he might have just turned beet red and look like the most awkward person on the face of the planet. Great.]

And yeah, the two of you are pretty much married.

[He rubs the back of his neck awkwardly.]

I cook noodles sometimes, or I tried to make some stuff I remembered from home. Chinese stuff, y'know? Simon cooks more. Meat and vegetables and stuff. Stir fry. Pretty healthy stuff.

[He watched Sam for another few seconds, purposefully leaving his face expressionless before he glanced away with a snerk]

So, Jack didn't tell you about Elvis?

[but then his curiosity grew, first at the mention of Sam's Chinese culinary skill and next at the cooking habits of Simon. He shouldn't be surprised... with a body like Simon's, he didn't have much in the way of fried foods or lots of calories, but...]

I'm having difficulty picturing this as reality. The only time I've seen him cooking is when he had the housewarming.

What about Elvis?

[He gives Eugene a curious look. No, he definitely hadn't heard about that.]

Yeah but let's face it, we have people who do the cooking at Abel, keep us all on our rations. He's not bad really when he has the ingredients. Some of those health shake things look pretty awful though.

If he hasn't told you, I'm not telling you.

[he grinned and shrugged, shoving both his hands in his pockets]

Oh, God, don't remind me about Abel rations. I know they were necessary but do you realize just how-- how... ugh. Ugh... what I wouldn't give to cook something up in those kitchens once in a while.

[But yeah, standing all day on crutches to cook wasn't exactly smart either]

Oh! That's not fair! I want to hear!

[He huffs and gives Eugene a petulant look.]

Well y'know, maybe when we get proper farms set up and, I dunno, we found a couple of goats on one of the search missions.

Well, too bad. Gotta leave some mystery in my relationship, don't I?

[Considering what Sam just said made him pause and think about what kind of food variety would be possible if they managed livestock]

...Could have cheese again if we managed to score some cows...

Well, it's not like the walls of the shack are that well sound-proofed.

[He can't help but grin.]

Yeah we could. Although I reckon most of the milk is probably gonna be for the kids at first. They need their calcium.

[He had the decency to smirk, because Sam was getting him back for the whole 'blue mouth zom look' for the cotton candy, wasn't he? A soft chuckle accompanied that and he shrugged, helpless]

Have your runners find me a gag and you won't be kept up.

[Still, he cleared his throat and glanced away]

So you're going to be on that roster, too. Lucky bastard, I miss milk...
