For... me? [He never really gave his own personal future much thought. He was always so absorbed in the past before, and once he started focusing on the future, he always thought more about the future of others, and the future of the world.]

I guess... I never really considered my own future. I'm still working on accepting my present.

Yes, for you. Surely you have goals you would like to achieve, or things you would like to do or see. They can't all be related to doing what is best for Lhant.

[Ironically, this is an incredibly hypocritical thing for Richard to be asking, because he's exactly the same way. The future of Windor is his future, as far as he's concerned. He doesn't have any personal goals of his own that aren't related to bettering things for his people and the people of Ephinea.]

Honestly? [He pauses for a moment, still being dragged along by Richard. Sure is taking a long time to walk there.]

As long as the people around me are happy, and I'm doing what's right? Then... That's all that really matters to me.

[It's going to take even longer, because Richard just stopped walking. Instead, he turns to look at Asbel, his expression somewhere between surprise and sadness.]

But what about your own happiness? Don't you have any desire for that as well?

As long as my loved ones are happy, then... I'm happy. I could never be content if Sophie, or Cheria, or you, or any of the others were upset or dissatisfied over something.

[That makes the two of them exactly alike. Richard has already come to the conclusion that happiness isn't something that's in the cards for himself, so instead he's decided to dedicate himself to the happiness of the people he cares about.]

You really are a remarkable person, Asbel. Still, you mustn't forget that it also goes the other way around. Your happiness is our happiness, just as our happiness is yours.

[The difference, of course, is that Asbel knows he can be happy, but he'd never be able to live with himself if he was happy and yet others were miserable.]

I know. [He sounds amused by Richard's statement.] We'll just have to both work hard to maintain that balance then.
