What: Guy Fawkes/Bonfire Night celebration
When: The evening of November 5th, of course
Where: Out in a conveniently clear patch of land outside the village where nothing will set on fire.
Summary: November 5th is Bonfire Night for all of those of British origin and for anyone else, well, fireworks and a bonfire and good food can't exactly hurt right?

It had taken a fair amount of work to get this set up, but by the time people arrive, there's a large bonfire roaring in a cleared out area and a table of food and drink set out for anyone feeling a bit peckish. He has gone all out; pork pies and mushy peas,
parkin, bonfire toffee, all of these are set out along with whatever else he thought people might enjoy. There are also drinks of all kinds, from juice to mulled wine and beer.

Of course, the main event is the fireworks, which are let off once everyone has arrived and settled down to watch them.

"Travesty," Simon shakes his head, although he's just as fond of coffee, to be honest. He reaches over and steals a handful of the marshmallows she's still hoarding, popping them one by one into his mouth without bothering with the fire.

[tryit]

She gives him a mildly disgusted look. He's wasting a perfectly good fire right now.

"Speaking of travesties..."

[luckynumberthree]

"What?" The word's muffled around marshmallow and he pauses to swallow before arching an eyebrow. "It's a marshmallow. I was hungry."

[tryit]

"They taste better roasted."

[luckynumberthree]

"It also takes longer." He feels this is a valid argument to back up his 'hungry' reasoning.

[tryit]

She rolls her eyes. "Whatever happened to patience being a virtue?"

[luckynumberthree]

"Never claimed to be virtuous. Just hungry," he countered with a smirk, then snagged one of the extra sticks and popped two marshmallows on the end. "But if you're gonna be fussy..."

[tryit]

"Hey, it's not my fault you Brits do everything backwards."

[luckynumberthree]

"Considering we were doing it first, I think you've got that backwards.."

[tryit]

She bats his leg playfully with her own, attention otherwise still focused on roasting her marshmallows to perfection.

"I'm pretty certain that we're the ones who patented the modern day marshmallow."

[luckynumberthree]

"Shows how much you know," Simon snickers as he pops his own stick over the flames. "Technically I think the French did that. But the Egyptians had something similar to it. It was used for sore throats."

Because Simon Lauchlan is a wealth of absolutely useless trivia.

Kate snorts. "Did you miss the part where I said 'modern day'?"

"Just because you stick a sticker that says NEW on something doesn't make it actually new," he teases her, bumping his shoulder against hers.

[tryit]

She bumps his shoulder in return, hand falling to casually rest on his thigh. Kate snickers a little, shaking her head in mock disappointment as she slowly moves her thumb in small circles.

"You know that's not the way the world works, don't you? Dad never would have made his first fortune if that was the case."

"His first fortune?" Simon echoes, not missing that distinction and shooting her a startled look. "How many did he make?"

[tryit]

Kate shrugs. "A few?"

She knows she's mentioned it to Sam. But it's kind of slipped Kate's mind all together as to whether or not she's mentioned her family's wealth to Simon.

She hasn't. Then again, half their time of late hasn't been spent talking and the times that has is usually more the witty banter sort rather than delving into history.

Simon gives a low whistle at that, one eyebrow arching upwards, but he's still playful and relaxed, because he's used to compartmentalizing the present and Before. Even if Before here means Luceti and not the apocalypse. But hey. Everyone's gotta come from somewhere.

"Well now. Aren't we fancy stuff?"

She's never been comfortable with her family's wealth even when Kate has had no problem using it to her own advantage in the past. In general, she really doesn't have a lot of positive things to say about New York's upper crust. It wasn't until the Young Avengers that she really had real friends in school. Everything can be so... fake.

But Simon's reaction is a better one than she could have hoped for. About as playful as he's been with anything else she's told him. And it puts her at ease. "It has its advantages."

"Let me guess. You have all the best toys," he teased her, tugging his stick out of the fire to eye his marshmallows skeptically (and a hint impatiently) before putting them back over the flames again.

[tryit]

Shaking her head at his impatience, Kate pulls her perfectly done marshmallows from the fire and offers it to Simon. Her thumb continues to draw small circles as she leans against him. "You bet. I even had a pony. In New York City."

No reason to mention that said pony came from one of New York's bigger crime lords.

[luckynumberthree]

"I'm not going to eat your marshmallows," he chuckles when she offers him hers. "Mine are almost done anyway. "There's chocolate and graham crackers in the bag there if you want the whole mess of it. A pony, huh? What the heck did you do with a pony in New York City? Was there even anywhere to ride it?"

[tryit]

"What a gentleman," she quips, reaching across him and into the bag to pull out the graham crackers and chocolate. How long has it been since she last had s'mores? Forever, it seems. "We kept it in a stable up in Westchester. Sometimes Dad would have a driver bring it down to the city so I could ride in Central Park."

[luckynumberthree]

Simon just starts chuckling at that. "Sounds tough. Musta been busy, growing up in the city?"

[tryit]

"Definitely not boring."

Even though, in that sense, being rich had little to do with the excitement of living in the Big Apple. Not with all the superheros who call New York home.

[luckynumberthree]

"So how did you go from the little rich girl with a pony to being a bow-wielding superhero?" he counters after a moment, rocking sideways to bump his shoulder against hers.
