That sounds very unpleasant. I hope that it won't strain your friendship unduly. [The temptation to prod further is fierce. He rubs his forehead with one hand.]

Perhaps you ought to get a bit of help with it?

[He can't help but laugh. There had already been a bit of strain between him and Peggy since the last Shift. He doesn't think this is improving things at all.]

I really don' think there's much anyone can do. We're just going to have to wait it out.

But if things are difficult now, life rarely returns to complete equilibrium once the problem is past. And you never know when that will happen.

[He sighs.]

People really don't communicate enough. In general. Not to be rude but Terrans are particularly bad at it, from what I've seen.

That's true, I suppose. But there really isn't anything that can be done about it.

If you can't solve the problem, then there is always reaching an empathetic understanding with it. [That's what he's had to do with Rothel. That's why he's come to peace with pretending they're not related. It's what was necessary for Rothel to function well in his own life.]

Yes. You are from Earth, right? If I've misjudged I'm terribly sorry.

[Lon grins.] I've been told there is a negative connotation to non-homo sapiens using the term Earthlings. Something to do with twentieth century mass media.

The most pernicious conflicts the the ones where no blood is drawn.

[Laugh.] Little green men? I think it's something to do with that? Though obviously, I'm not at all green.

No blood. No argument. It's not even a misunderstanding. We're just...it's complicated.

Ah, aliens and conspiracy theories. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the aliens were almost always depicted as being enemies to humans in the movies.

I hope it clears up soon, then. [He'll just leave that alone now.]

Yes! Yes, that's it. It made things terribly awkward upon first contact, I hear.

[He smiles just slightly. Steve can't help but think about what happened in New York. His first experience with aliens hadn't been the greatest either. He might be able to pick up on some glimpses of the battle as Steve remembers and the anxiety he feels.]

[Steve looks startled. How could he know? He clearly doesn't seem to have any of Loki's memories so how...?]

I didn't think Earth had ever been invaded.

Ah, but time doesn't necessarily make something less troubling.

[Steve isn't sure how to respond. He's still wondering how he had figured it out...almost as if he had pulled the thoughts from his head.]

[Steve stares at him for a long moment looking very uncomfortable. What else had he been able to read off of him? What if he sees himself among Steve's memories and asks questions?]
