A Birthday Gathering for Rei...

Summary: Rei has a birthday, and she doesn’t really know what to make of it. Minako and Ami, however, have other plans, and organize a small get-together.
Rating: PG because birthday? If this changes, I’ll update.


Another year, another birthday, and this one is rather symbolic. It’s her third in Luceti, and if she were home she’d be finishing up high school, an odd thought for certain. It’s not bad really, and she’s hoping for a quiet day to herself with a little time with a few close friends, the ones that already know it’s her birthday. No big party, no announcements, nothing like that. Just friends.

Of course, it’s not like Minako and Ami to go against what she’s explicitly asked for. However, they’re not going to let the occasion pass unmarked. To that end, a small gathering has been organized at Tsukino Shrine. There’s food, drinks, and a few board-games inside the small building’s main room, where people can take refuge from the day’s occasional showers. It is April after all.

Afterwards, Rei closes up for the evening and heads home to House 3 for a more private evening with her friends from home. They haven’t spent a lot of time together as a group and that needs to change.

[Cliff grinned mischeivously at his partner's query, remembering a particular incident that had happened around the new year, and leaned down to whisper his reply.]

Let's tease her so bad that she stays red for a week!

[He would make a Sailor Senshi joke here, but he's supposed to stay quiet on that, even from Cliff.

Instead, he snickers a little and looks over at the pair.]

We can as her how she liked that wine, hm? That should start it off.

[Cliff had refrained from making a similar joke because of a similar promise he had made to the young woman months ago. He had wanted to see if she blushed any redder than her skirt, but there was no way that he could ask that without breaking the delicate trust that a teenage woman places in her friends.

Smirking, Cliff followed his gaze.]

That'd be a good start. Maybe offer a few candles too, for the mood.

They're rather good at setting their own mood, don't you think?

[He smiled faintly, watching as Fenimore and Rei got cozy.]

Young people seem to be much better at recognizing their feelings.

Yeah-- they haven't had enough time to second guess themselves.

[Cliff sighed, quietly amused by the love birds.]

Or time to get so deep that they don't see it. I'm almost jealous.

[Souji reached over and poked Cliff in the arm.]

Projecting a little, aren't we?

Come on, we've seen enough to tease, so let's give them the privacy they didn't afford us.

[aerialassault]

[Chagrinned, Cliff rubbed the back of his head with a hand and cast Souji an embarrassed little grin.]

What? That obvious?

[He was old, Souji. Let him be old!

He cast one last look at the two of them, still smiling, before turning his back to them entirely.]

Yeah. We don't need to stoop to that level. Yet.

[ahappylie]

[He can't stop Cliff from being old, so he has to tease him about it.

The swordsman laughed a bit and shook his head.]

I think if we tagged along on their dates we might be a bit too conspicuous. Or one of us would.

[aerialassault]

Yeah. You're too pretty to hide very well.

[He said it with a grin, playfully poking his partner's forehead with that swift bit of reparte.]

It wouldn't be fair to either of them. You'd steal the whole show.

[Oh my god, Cliff. 8(

Still, he left himself open for that so he just gave a soft chuckle and shook his head again. Cliff is absolutely incorrigible.]

Says the man who has to duck to get indoors.

Hey, ain't my fault.

[Cliff shrugged, shaking his head]

Everyone else here's too short-- you included.

[ahappylie]

We're the right size for us. You're just trying to be a tree.

[aerialassault]

Nah. Being a tree would be a little boring-- they can't do anything but watch things and grow a few leaves.

I'm just trying to be me. That's all.

[ahappylie]

Not if you were a tree that moved. Think of all the pranks you could pull.

[Or the people you could spy on.]

[Espionage wasn't really his thing-- Sorry, Souji. His inherent tree-ness made espionage rather tricky for him to do properly.]

Says the old man.

[He poked Cliff in the side and then tugged on his arm.]

Come on, let's leave them alone. I saw sweets back at the party.

[aerialassault]

[Cliff, chuckling in his amusement, let himself be pulled away.]

Yeah, sure. This old man wants some of that cake to follow that sweet little show.

...I hope everything works out for them.

[ahappylie]

You need to tell me your birthday someday, too, you know. We can't keep just having cake to celebrate other people.

[He glanced over his shoulder at the pair as they left, smiling faintly as he recalled Rei's intensity over choosing a gift just a few months prior.]

Oh, I think they'll be fine.

[aerialassault]

Hah. You're probably right.

[He smiled. In truth, this was already going far better than he had hoped for his young friend-- he wished them luck for many months to come.]

...its in May, I think. [Cliff said, his tone thoughtful as he tried to go through the calculations again.]

All that time jumping planets and timezones and seasons kinda messed with my senses a little. I dunno exactly how long we were on Nel and Albel's planet, but it was a while. Coming here didn't help.

But, I think it's in May by this calendar. May 10.

Now, [he grinned,] you better tell me your's so we can keep it even. I don't wanna miss a chance to spoil you.

Are the seasons here very different from your home world?

[His weren't, but seeing how Cliff had to spin the calculations in his head, it wasn't hard to imagine that perhaps his home was different. Still, he noted the date and how quickly it was approaching.

Until Cliff asked him a similar question. He should have expected that, but it still caught him by surprise.]

Oh, and mine is in the summer. It's still some time away.

...It's just the calendar, mostly. There are groups of people back home who have a hard time with everything the Federation's imposed on everyone just to get by in intergalactic space, and it can be tricky to adjust to. They're sorta demanding.

[He scratched his head.]

And then Fayt and I had been travelling alot before we got here. There wasn't much time to catch up before we jumped off again.

...but, enough of that. It doesn't mean anything here. You need to give me more info than a season, you know.

Hmmm~ [He considered that for a moment, trying to avoid talking about his own birthday. It had unpleasant connotations and he didn't like thinking about it.]

I suppose it must be like me, then. The calendar and time here are so different that even while I've managed to adjust, I still don't fully understand.

[That should give him enough leeway. He feigned thinking harder on the subject, tapping a finger against his temple and lowering his head.]

I think it comes out to be around the seventh month of this calendar.

Seventh month...[Cliff trailed, doing some more mathematical acrobatics in his mind,] ...that brings us to July-- guess we can figure out the day later, huh?

[Or pick one arbitrarily, if this was turned out to be something more than a few miscalculations and it was something that Souji didn't talk about.

Cliff grinned.]

Unless you just wanna celebrate for the whole month, though that just seems like it'd make the day a little less special, yanno?
