A Birthday Gathering for Rei...

Summary: Rei has a birthday, and she doesn’t really know what to make of it. Minako and Ami, however, have other plans, and organize a small get-together.
Rating: PG because birthday? If this changes, I’ll update.


Another year, another birthday, and this one is rather symbolic. It’s her third in Luceti, and if she were home she’d be finishing up high school, an odd thought for certain. It’s not bad really, and she’s hoping for a quiet day to herself with a little time with a few close friends, the ones that already know it’s her birthday. No big party, no announcements, nothing like that. Just friends.

Of course, it’s not like Minako and Ami to go against what she’s explicitly asked for. However, they’re not going to let the occasion pass unmarked. To that end, a small gathering has been organized at Tsukino Shrine. There’s food, drinks, and a few board-games inside the small building’s main room, where people can take refuge from the day’s occasional showers. It is April after all.

Afterwards, Rei closes up for the evening and heads home to House 3 for a more private evening with her friends from home. They haven’t spent a lot of time together as a group and that needs to change.

Are the seasons here very different from your home world?

[His weren't, but seeing how Cliff had to spin the calculations in his head, it wasn't hard to imagine that perhaps his home was different. Still, he noted the date and how quickly it was approaching.

Until Cliff asked him a similar question. He should have expected that, but it still caught him by surprise.]

Oh, and mine is in the summer. It's still some time away.

...It's just the calendar, mostly. There are groups of people back home who have a hard time with everything the Federation's imposed on everyone just to get by in intergalactic space, and it can be tricky to adjust to. They're sorta demanding.

[He scratched his head.]

And then Fayt and I had been travelling alot before we got here. There wasn't much time to catch up before we jumped off again.

...but, enough of that. It doesn't mean anything here. You need to give me more info than a season, you know.

Hmmm~ [He considered that for a moment, trying to avoid talking about his own birthday. It had unpleasant connotations and he didn't like thinking about it.]

I suppose it must be like me, then. The calendar and time here are so different that even while I've managed to adjust, I still don't fully understand.

[That should give him enough leeway. He feigned thinking harder on the subject, tapping a finger against his temple and lowering his head.]

I think it comes out to be around the seventh month of this calendar.

Seventh month...[Cliff trailed, doing some more mathematical acrobatics in his mind,] ...that brings us to July-- guess we can figure out the day later, huh?

[Or pick one arbitrarily, if this was turned out to be something more than a few miscalculations and it was something that Souji didn't talk about.

Cliff grinned.]

Unless you just wanna celebrate for the whole month, though that just seems like it'd make the day a little less special, yanno?

Do I get sweets everyday for the month if we do?

I dunno 'bout sweets, but I can spoil you every day for a month!

[ahappylie]

That doesn't make me want to find out what day I'm born on here, you know.

Well, what about if I spoil you extra special on the day we figure it out? Does that work?

You know you shouldn't spoil me too much, right? I can be insufferable if you do.

Welp. That's just a burden I'll have to bear.

[He laughed again and shook his head.]

One day I'll learn how to get on your nerves.

That ain't gonna work-- I'd just learn how to get on your's if you ever figured it out.

Something has to ruffle your feathers.

Had we met ten years ago, you'd have a much easier time of this. But, you try spending a few months on a ship with a bunch of energetic folks who have a nasty case of cabin fever. It's a great way to learn some patience.

[He snickered.] I've spent most of my life with men like that, Cliff-san. Even with an entire country to walk around in, some people simply aren't meant to be contained.

I don't doubt that, but I'm willing to bet that a shipful of discontended Klausians is a little crazier than your barracks were. [He smirked mischeivously at this.] ...Unless you wanna prove me wrong.

[ahappylie]

And how should I do that when I don't know what discontented Klausians are like? [He saw that teasing look and returned it one of his own.]

Be creative. Use that imagination of your's.

[He was curious about what Souji could come up with.]

[Be creative, he said. Okay, Souji can do that.

He stops walking and leans his head back, tapping a finger against his chin as he thinks.]

[ahappylie]

[He could say something terrible, something inappropriate, or something actually factual, but why do any of those? He lets the silence sink in for a minute, then looks to Cliff.]

Did you chase people with chickens?

[He didn't, but hey.]

[Cliff stopped and stared at Souji, completely caught off guard by the seemmingly absurd reply.]

...Why would you chase someone around with food?

[Live animals were rare on ships, as there simply wasn't the facilities for one. Cliff was thinking of a cooked chicken leg, not the live animal.]

Why not?

[Souji shrugged.]

The best way to beat someone is to take them off guard.

[Cliff grinned.]

Nah, that's too obvious. The best way to beat them? Is with the scuttlebutt.

[ahappylie]

[Okay, you lost him.]

I have no idea what that is, but it certainly doesn't sound edible.

[Cliff gently patted him on the shoulder, understanding the pain.]

It's not food, Souji. It's something much more useful.
