Specialist Davis - Day 3, Round 1

[personal profile] specializing 2014-05-22 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
[He was supposed to be able to handle it on his own. The invasion plans had been meticulously crafted and timed with the precision of a Swiss watch. He and his forces knew what they were up against, or they thought they did. But the times when everything smoothly follows the plan are not the times that shape you into a real soldier - he knows that well. Still, this hell is more than more than the standard margin of error had predicted. His reinforcements never came. Something went seriously wrong, and the whole assault unraveled. In his hands.

That's when the last-ditch call to arms was fired out. As if anyone had any choice in the matter.

The freshly-conscripted fighters (or not so fresh, considering the hour) can find Davis scrambling around behind the lines, issuing brusque orders and attempting to suffocate any outbreak of panic in the air. That stuff is contagious, and he won't have it. While his right shoulder is wrapped in bandages that are slowly soaking through with a telltale rust color, he'll erase any doubts of his capabilities with his sharp body language, which is carefully forced in order to exude steel-like command.

But there are moments where he lets it slip. And his haggard grimace says it all.]

John - Day 1

[For once, John sounds... tired. And a little exasperated, which is about as unhappily emotional as he gets.]

Welcome back to the land of the living, Luceti draftees. Yes, that means you died. Do you recall that sudden burst of light that was, to you, only a few moments ago? That was the bomb Specialist Davis was trying to stop before he was cut off and you lot went to rescue him. Quite dangerous, that bomb. The best way to describe it is a mass sacrificial black hole. I'd explain more, but we haven't the time.

You've been pulled back to the beginning of the attack- two days before you joined it, in fact. Going by your calendar, it's May 20th. You're the first residents of this world to be revived before you died, isn't that fascinating? Two days is all the time I could buy for you without creating more problems than would be solved, so it's your job to make good use of what you've got. Do yourself - and Davis, and all of the troops attempting to prevent that massacre from repeating itself - a favor and ignore that valiant but ultimately wasteful rescue attempt. He dies, or you all die- those are your most likely options. Perhaps he'll live long enough for you to save him after the bomb is dealt with, but if you don't deactivate it first, you'll never know.

I can't save you again. If you fail once more, you'll discover what true death in this world is like, and chances are you'll never go back to your own worlds.

It's your choice.

[Well that explains things. Hardly a choice at all either, is it? He wonders if now's the time to ask questions but- no. These could be important, so he'll be brief. If John's even taking questions from the peanut gallery.]

Just Luceti draftees. [Guess that means they're on their own. Talk about a hassle.] Wouldn't an MSF team trained for this kind of thing be more effective?

That's just cynical enough for me to appreciate it.

Unfortunately, I don't have the information required to repeat the process with them. There's plenty of soldiers around now if you'd like to pass the task on to someone you feel is more qualified, but you lot always seem to want something to do.

-Hey, wait a minute, did you move or something?!

[ This is a serious moment. There are more serious things. But he is briefly distracted from all his wasted time . . . ]

[ Now isn't the time to let those words sink in to the core.

They're here, and now it's time to get up and continue on. What a message. What a limited amount of time. Dearly bought time. ]

Then we'll thank you later, and be awaiting your full explanation once we tackle that objective.

[ Because even with limited time, if the intelligent brains on this team couldn't pull a plan together, then - well, no time to dwell on that. Just go. ]
