[This time he turns, looking back at Riku.]

But is there really any answer they could give that would explain all of this? Perhaps it's not enough just to know their motivation. I don't see how anything could be worth so much suffering...

You'd be surprised, Ion.

[He heaves a heavy sigh and folds his arms.]

There are people out there who're so fixed on gaining power, that they'd throw away a million lives, if it meant achieving their goals. To them, all that suffering's a means to an end. They see people as cannon fodder, collateral damage, pawns... Maybe all of the above.

...actually, I do know there are people out there like that. And if not for the motivations of a man who wanted nothing more than to destroy a world he saw as flawed, I probably wouldn't have even been born.

[After all, replicas were such a vital part of Van's plan to destroy the world and the people who still believed in the Score. There really were a lot of parallels here, between Van and the cultists, and perhaps even those who believed so fervently in the Score. Maybe that's what makes it so difficult to take.]

Back on Auldrant, there were people who had such strong beliefs that they would even go so far as to start a war just because their beliefs told them they should. I'm well aware there are people out there like that... but I still can't understand how someone can look at this and not see how terrible it all is. It's as though they're blind to it... or perhaps incapable of understanding it at all.

[Riku grimaces at Ion's words, yet the news hardly surprises him. Aren't most wars started over a clash of beliefs? Differences in goals and ideals? All it takes is one small spark for disaster to strike...]

Maybe they're blind because it's the only way to get by. That's the thing with soldiers; they've gotta follow orders, whether they like it or not. So, for all we know, there could be cultists out there who hate what they have to do. Deep down, they might not want a part of it, but they're stuck. It's their lives versus everyone else's, and under that kinda pressure, they're probably taking the safest route and just following along.

If not, then their hearts are probably just clouded with darkness. There's probably no reasoning with them, and all we can really do is fight back.

[He rubs at one of his temples, squeezing his eyes shut tight.]

Makes me wonder if this'll ever really end.

[That certainly was a chilling thought -- that perhaps the bulk of the cultists were merely following orders they believed were somehow justified and may not actually want to carry them out. But even if that were the case, on the battlefield, ideals didn't mean much. When it's your life or his, sometimes the only option is to fight.]

...we have to believe it will. If we can't even hope for the possibility of a peaceful future, then there's no real point in fighting, is there?

It's just a matter of trying to find exactly what that peace will look like when we reach it.

[And so far the Malnosso's vision of peace seems to revolve around wiping out the entirety of the cultist population. Whether or not there could be another option remains to be seen.]

It's the same way with this world. People give up so easily when their friends disappear. The stakes might not be as high, but I think you hit the nail on the head with this.

[Sora'd probably know what to say at a time like this. Chances are, he'd spout some sappy remarks about keeping their spirits up, thinking positive, and working to create that future themselves.

Now, Riku isn't Sora, but he can at least try to apply the same sentiments.]

We can't just follow the Malnosso blindly. I think that if we really want to find peace, we're gonna have to orge that path with our own hands.
