This post is for the draftee-only portion of the Zompania draft--the day 3 death, time travel to day 1, and then the events until the arrival of the reinforcements. Be sure to use the above info post for any plotting needs you might have. Enjoy!

[He shakes his head roughly.] Don't smile and say something like that.

[Better yet, don't talk about it at all, because he doesn't want to dwell on it and he doesn't want to see Jeb crack apart. Focus on fighting, on surviving. Too many questions will weigh you down. He points up to the roof of the building behind them.]

I'll keep watch from up there. You stay down here and be ready, got it?

...you know why I can't do what you're saying, right?

[It's obvious, isn't it? Shouldn't it be? Why he has to at least hold onto something familiar? He lets a shaky exhale as he snaps out of it and listens to the rest of what Jean has to say, nodding.]

Okay. You can count on me.

[He has an idea, yeah. He used to think positivity was nothing but a form of denial, but maybe you need a dose of denial to keep functioning in a time like this. He's gonna make it, he's gonna live through this--

Firing off the iron cables of his gear, he swings up to the rooftop, landing with an easy flip. His eyes survey the area. It only takes a moment.]

Cultists at eleven. Four of them, heading this way.

Four of them?!

[He can't afford to stay too panicked for long. He needs to prepare himself to attack, and that's exactly what he does. He begins to focus on creating an attack far greater than he did before, which unfortunately is going to take more time and effort.]

I'll try to draw some of the bastards into the air - you take out the ones that stay grounded.

[He waits a beat, as the cultists tread closer. One at a time, just focus on one fight at a time or you'll end up in trouble--

Then, blades already out, he launches himself off the roof, zipping over to the building standing across the street. That catches the attention of the patrol below - two of them break off to go after Jean, who has completed his landing on the roof. He dodges their swords, trying to duck around the first soldiers back to aim for his wings.]

[He acknowledges Jean's orders, but doesn't make it known--he has to keep himself focused on using his magic.

And it's a good thing he does, because he successfully manages to create many, many vines to spring up from underneath the ground and deal with the two cultists who were still approaching him. Even if they manage to avoid being mobilized by those, there's a second part to this assault--the rocks appearing in thin air and zooming toward their faces.

Jeb is being merciless, because he can't afford not to be.]

[He doesn't have time to worry about how Jeb is doing on the ground; in the compressed space of battle, he can only trust in Jeb's abilities, and worry about himself. And whether or not there's room for mercy, he can't bring himself to fight with the intent to kill.

When his blades slice through skin and hollow bone, and bloodied feathers fly into the air as a scream flies from the cultist's throat, Jean's stomach lurches. He tries to block it out, tries not to wonder as the soldier falters and stumbles off the roof how much longer will he hang on will he die because of me even if I didn't try to did I kill him? Keep fighting, stay alive, come on...]

I... have... to--!

[He speaks this to only himself as he continues his assault, trying not to flinch as he becomes certain that one of the rocks he's throwing breaks a cultist's nose. He can only push himself forward, creating more vines to spring out and wrap around the other cultist's neck when they break free of the others. He doesn't want to do this again--the day before, he had to do this in front of a kid.

But he will. He will if he has to, he will if there's no hint that the cultist will back down. Except in the back of Jeb's mind, he knows the snared cultist won't back down at all. He causes the vines to tighten in warning.]
