This post is for the draftee-only portion of the Zompania draft--the day 3 death, time travel to day 1, and then the events until the arrival of the reinforcements. Be sure to use the above info post for any plotting needs you might have. Enjoy!

[His smile turns bitter as he looks away.]

Yeah, I've been ordered to get some rest. [He swallows.] The cultists could attack at any time. We need all the help we can get, and I get ordered to rest.

[He sighs. It's useless to even try, he knows that much. He couldn't so much as close his eyes without seeing piles of dead corpses.]

No. I don't think I want to know.

[So he takes orders...another soldier? It would fit with what he'd learned about the man since meeting him at the fountain via casual and sometimes not so casual observation.]

They could, yes, which is why we need a rotation of rested soldiers on the field.

[Siege warfare wasn't something Souji had first-hand experience with, but as with all warriors, he'd read up on the tactics as a matter of rote learning. Exhausting your soldiers lead to mistakes and mistakes lead to loss, death and eventual destruction.]

We've survived this long. Just a little bit longer and we'll be home.

I don't need as much sleep. A perk of being...well, me.

[It's true that he didn't need as much sleep as the average person due to the serum, but that didn't make him infallible. Nearly five days of no sleep-not including when they all died-is still a lot for his system to take. Not that he would admit that.]

Yeah, I know. But I don't want to get too excited just yet. We're still waiting on reinforcements.

[Of being "me"? He tilted his head, making his curiosity obvious.]

We are, which is why you should rest some.

Unless people in the future have somehow learned to no longer need sleep after five days.

[Steve notices his curiosity.]

I was given something called the Super Soldier Serum. It made me strong, fast, basically everything I am right now. Because of it...I don't need as much sleep. [Yet he eats the average amount of food normally consumed by two. That's die to the serum as well.]

If something happens, I want to be prepared. Can't do that when I'm asleep.

Mm, not everything.

[Souji holds his forefingers and thumbs up like a picture frame, focusing in on Steve's face.]

Yes, definitely not everything.

[He lowers his hands and shakes his head.]

You also can't do it when you're so tired you can hardly see straight. How about this - I stay here while you sleep. If something happens, I'll wake you immediately.

[He shakes his head at Souji's antics and waves his hands away. The serum might as well have made him attractive as well, considering he hadn't had women interested in him at the time. Ever.

What Souji says next catches his attention though and he studies the other man for a long moment.]

Why would you do that? I'm sure there's something else you'd rather do then watch me sleep.

[Souji removed the swords at his waist, placing them carefully on the ground next to him, settling back to sit a little more comfortably.]

You would feel better having someone stand watch, wouldn't you? In case something happens, you'd have someone to wake you immediately.

I...[He means to protest, but the words fail him. The truth is he would feel a lot better about getting some sleep if someone was around to wake him up.]

Alright, fine. But don't think you need to stick around if you have something better to do. Just make sure you wake me up before you go.

[Souji smiled and shrugged slightly.]

I needed to take a break as well, but if I need to leave, I will be sure to inform you.

[In other words, he's not leaving until Steve actually wakes up. Even if he gets bored and has to draw little wings on Steve's boots.]

There's a lull for now, so you may as well take advantage of it.

Alright, alright. I can't make any promises that I'll actually fall asleep though.

[He grabs his shield from where its leaning against the wall and lays it down on the ground. Then Steve turns and lowers his head onto the shield. It's not the best pillow alternative, but it does in a pinch.

After a moment of getting settled, he allows his eyes to fall closed.]

It's enough to try.

[Not the most comfortable, no, but Souji understood the reasons. They couldn't afford to get too comfortable in a war zone, and having one's weapons nearby was a necessity.

He nodded and waited until Steve closed his eyes to shift, pulling his swords up to rest against his shoulder and looking away. Staring at the man would only keep him awake longer.]
