Who: YOU AND ME! THAT SPELLS... MOUYE?
What: More event shenanigans

Summary: It's that special time when the Malnosso collect all their recent experiments and apply them all at once to measure effectiveness. Although invaluable as research, it tends to leave the subjects looking just a bit mad.

So there is a mod post and it pretty much tells you EVERYTHING you need to know. This is a second log so people can change up their effects and try something new, jump into the event late, or just avoid the impending CAPTCHA on the first log.

[He awoke almost a week ago, and was still awake--this Shift was going for much longer than anticipated. This bothered Red. Deeply. While not normally a drinker by nature, he finds himself stealing into Good Spirits late that night with the intent of having a few whiskey shots and letting his mind drift. Without Luke, Sabriel, or even Adele to call upon without making relations more awkward, there was little else to do but continue working. His notes were all ready compiled, however, and he left a pointed note for Lupin tucked into the journal for him to find whenever the Shift actually ended.

For an evening, just an evening, he was taking a break.

The blond man sitting in the bar went unnoticed as he slid up to the bar and ordered his whiskey--not a pure shot, but served on the rocks. If he was going to drink, he meant to enjoy himself.]

[Six days. Six days as a man and Adele is starting to get very tired of the entire ordeal. He's done his usual routine for the week, work, relax, his evenings were open because Cloud nine didn't have a proprietor at the moment. Or rather because the proprietor was a child. So that time was spent in Good spirits, enjoying a book and a drink. Conversation if any came his way. Tonight's book is an old favorite, the Gin is good, and...

Red is just one seat over. After a moment Adele turns and offers him a half smile.]

You have been keeping yourself busy Red.

Adele.

[He doesn't start, but sets his tumbler down on the small napkin provided and shuffles his position to face her. Their last interactions were...awkward, at best. He didn't exactly know how to proceed.]

I have. Lupin has a full note this time, explaining everything that happened. Points of view are a mess when looking back, so maybe this time he'll keep everything straight.

[And not be an idiot like last time. They couldn't afford to mess up anymore friendships because of the Malnosso.]

Or he'll ignore everything.

[He lifts a shoulder and resumes sipping his Gin.] But I honestly doubt he'll do that.

[Lupin was an information monger- and that's a title he hadn't given out in a long while. Applying it to Lupin fit but. At the same time it makes him uneasy. But it was true, after a fashion.]

He won't--he knows what's important.

[Above all else, Lupin was intelligent. The trick was getting him to use his wiles in a way that benefited everyone and not just however he pleased.]

But enough of that. This Shift has lasted too long, don't you think? How are you managing?

Occasionally. I don't credit him with an overabundance of common sense. After all. He is a thief. And a mandman. And friends with me. That alone speaks volumes as to how much common sense he has.

[He scrubs his face with a slow grunt, blinking back an odd lethargy. This week had been exhausting. The days before even more so.]

I haven't murdered anyone yet. So. I think I'm doing well.

...he's smarter than he looks. Trust me.

[Red smiles slowly at Adele, a decent mimic of Lupin's own sly smirk. The woman didn't give herself enough credit--but it was frustration that fueled her words. He knew that feeling well.

He sighs, smile flickering away, and leans back in his chair. Adele had all ready seen him at a low point. What was the point in hiding now?]

That's as good as any of us can hope to manage right now, but enough of that. Let's not talk about the Shift.

I would hope so, since he does not look terribly smart.

[It's a joke. Or it isn't. Either way Adele huffs a laugh to himself and finishes his Gin, turning in his seat to better look over at Red. Whatever it was he'd been doing, whatever they had to cope with tonight-it's better not to think about. On that, he can agree.]

Then what shall we talk about? The weather?

[Red chuckles at the sorry joke, glad for something to change the mood. Their relationship was odd, awkward--anything to deflect from that as well was a welcome change. He glances at her with the distant, lazy eyes of a cat, and a strange smile grew on his face as he spoke.]

I don't know--life in general? The Fountain?

There is not much for me to say on the matter. I'm crowd control, from what I understand. Other than that I have heard nothing.

[He shrugs.]

Unless you know otherwise.

We need a balloon.

[It was stated simply, as if it were just something as casual as the weather.]

A hot air balloon. It's hard to rig up if you don't have a ton of mechanical know-how, and Lupin is best with smaller gadgets. He needs help with the actual fire mechanism--balance, control--but isn't asking for it.

At all.

[He sighs.] It's a big thing too, but he keeps stalling. Its the distractions. He always falls for distractions.

Has he not worked with hot air balloons before? Or did he simply purchase the parts and assemble them as needed? I do not think it would be terribly likely for anyone to just find a whole rig in the village.

[Frowning, he drums his fingers on the countertop. No hot air, no heist. But. He doesn't know anything about hot air balloons.]

Damnit Red, [A grunt of irritation.] I'm a surgeon, not a mechanic!

He's a thief, Adele. He steals the necessary components.

[Sarcasm aside, there's a smirk that's an echo of Lupin's curling his lips. The glimpse at the cool, sly thief is ruined by her frustration--Red bursts out laughing.]

Oh--God Goldie! I never pegged you for a Trekkie!

Dellie, not Goldie. [It's a fairly quick, quiet reminder. Something he intends to stick with for a long while afterward.]

McCoy was one of my heroes growing up, and a solid motivator that got me through medical school.

Sorry--Lupin doesn't see the point in differentiating. You're both parts of one like he and I are...it's too complicated to explain.

[He shakes his head, shoving the thoughts aside for later, and takes a deep sip of his whiskey.]

Wasn't saying that there was anything wrong with liking McCoy. It was just a surprise.

...This isn't a discussion I want to have- because we've already seen where it goes. We're not, She's her, I'm me, don't call me Goldie.

[As far as he's concerned? End of discussion. Forever.]

It was one of the few things Robert and I had in common.

...I'm sorry, you know that Lupin's not going to listen to that, right?

[Which was going to make everything that much more rough. Lupin liked the nickname for Adele as herself as well. The last thing Red wanted to see was her not smiling.] I'll do what I can to keep him in line, but there's not much I can do.

...

At least you had something in common enough to make life bearable. I wasn't asking you to build one, though.

That's for he and I to work out.

[End of discussion. Right now he has to work out how to get a hot air balloon up in the air and flying without worrying about actually being on it because that would just be the worst goddamn thing ever-

He cuts off that line of thought with a swallow of gin.]

We didn't even speak the same language when we met. He didn't know much French, I didn't know much English. But the mechanism- I could speak to Howard. Or Stark. But. I'd rather speak to Howard.

[Just work it out for the better, and don't take any irritation at Red out on Lupin--that was his only hope, left unvoiced by her curt tone. He sighs at her words, and shakes his head again.]

Ask whomever you like--Lupin knows both but won't ask either. [He sneaks a glance at Adele once more, curious.]

...you never did learn to shave, did you?

I'll speak to Howard once I'm. Me. Again. Because I don't think flattery will go across near as well while I'm in a male body. [He snorts.]

Mm? Oh, no. I decided I like the rugged bestubbled look. It makes me so much more handsome, don't you think?

[The commentary earns a soft chuckle from Red, and he hides a smile in his tumbler.]

Oh, I don't know. I always prefered my men to be clean shaven.

Depends on the man. Why, I think I may very well attempt to grow a beard much like Ben's. Or perhaps a goatee and mustache like Stark's. I bet I could wear it better than him.

Anyone can wear it better than Stark, but I don't think you can pull off something like Obi-Wan. It would hide your smile. It's a nice smile--for you, not for anyone else.

...Red, you and your commentary on my smiles is edging upon romantic and borderline uncomfortable territory. The last time a man commented on how much, how nice, and how they want to see more of my smiles- it was my husband.

It's not romantic, believe me. Lupin thought for weeks that you cut too stern a figure. The smiles do wonders for you. They make you more approachable.
