TERRACE Draft - Remaining Days

[Cross's sudden appearance beside her in his Jeep startles Artemis out of her concentration. She'd gotten knocked off her roof a short while earlier and had been doing her best from the ground until things cleared enough for her to seek out another safe vantage point. But she was tiring fast and there were too many directions to guard at once.

Which was why his offer didn't even make her hesitate for more than the moment it took her to register who it was and what he was asking. Her lips curve in a grin as she swings herself up and into the back of the Jeep.]

Just what I needed. Please tell me you know how to drive this thing?

[He won't answer her question. A demonstration was needed. Throwing the gear shift into reverse and he spins the steering wheel in a full motion. The car turns quickly and he grips the gear shift and throws it back into drive. Slamming on the gas pedal the jeep speeds off down the road.

Looking at the road ahead, he stays focus, turning at the right moments, avoiding what falling rubble comes their way, and just avoiding obvious road blocks of broken buildings.]

That answer your question? Anyways, how many arrows do you have left?

[And at his question he hears other engines roaring behind him. Looking to the rear view mirror, cultists were coming after them in their own stolen jeeps.]

Cause I think I need some cover fire.

[He slams the Jeep into gear and she grabs on to maintain her balance, but the sudden burst of speed has her grinning as she braces herself in the back, enjoying the burst of energy that comes with the adrenaline rush. She calls back down to him at his question.]

You'll do, I suppose. And I've got enough. Stocked up not long before you showed. It's been a busy day.

[She hears the roar of engines almost the same time he does, and turns so she can see what they're dealing with. Three jeeps, all loaded in with Cultists. She tries for a headcount but they're kicking up too much dirt to get a clear view.]

Cover fire I can manage. See if you can keep it steady for me, wouldja?

[He'll do? Seriously? Was this the time for jokes?

Not the point in the end. Cross continues pressing on the gas, the jeep continually gaining speed until he's hitting about 100 Kmph.]

Can't make any promises, but I'll try! I'll try and get them to crash around the sharp corners! Hope you got some solid footing!

[There's a corner up ahead and he turns the wheel sharply. Cross attempts to make the transition as smooth as he can, if only to keep from throwing Artemis off the jeep.]

[Sorry, Cross. It's always the time for jokes. Especially when she's tense. Not to mention at that speed, she gives up on attempting to stand and crouches down in the back of the Jeep, wedging her feet to help her keep her balance. She leaves the driving to Cross and reaches for her quiver.

It takes her longer to aim than normal, but she's not wasting arrows and the movement's something she has to calculate for. Still, when she releases the arrow, it flies with unerring accuracy. Or mostly. One of the vehicles following them veers sharply off the road, the driver's shoulder now impaled with an arrow. It happens suddenly and there's no time for the passengers to recover the wheel, sending the vehicle tumbling over a roadblock and sending Cultists flying.]

One down.

[Cross takes a glance through one of the mirrors when the shot happens. Good, she wasn't killing them. Ten points to her. Okay, fifty actually.]

Nice shot!

[Going back to the road ahead, he grimaces as he now see's cultists coming to the front as well.]

More company dead ahead! [Turning his gaze to a road on the right, he turns the wheel sharply onto a new road, this one more narrower, but enough room for the size of their jeeps. However, this way the cultists that were following them had to go in a line behind them.]

[The news that there’s more isn’t surprising, but she doesn’t let it distract her. The swerve catches her off guard though and her arrow goes off course, snagging one of the cultists in the back of the nearest vehicle instead of the driver. She curses, bracing herself better before reaching for another arrow. There were now five vehicles pursuing them.]

No problem. Might as well start a collection. [Her voice is wry as she takes aim again.]

[They wouldn't be out of this narrow road for at least another minute. Which didn't bode well because one of the cars was coming up the rear.]

A collection? I don't think we can take all these cars back with us! Maybe a steering wheel.

[But this probably wasn't a good time joke when the car lurched a bit when an enemy jeep started hitting them in the back.]

[She saw it coming, but the Cultists were wising up and she couldn't get off a good shot in time. She grabbed for a handhold when the jeep lurched, riding it out. But a moment later, she spotted an opportunity and reached for a particular arrow in her quiver.]

Give me a little speed, Cross. I think I can slow them down.

[She slotted one of her arrows with the explosive tip, taking aim at the jeep's front grate. With any luck, she might even get the ones behind it stuck as well.]

On it!

[He puts the jeep into full throttle. Foot completely pressed down on the gas pedal as they go speeding forward. They manage to get about 30 feet ahead and with any luck they could out run them when Artemis made her move.]

[He puts on speed and she watches the distance he gives her carefully before loosing her arrow. For a moment, nothing happens. Then an explosion burns through the hood of the vehicle behind them and their pursuers vanish in a wall of smoke. The rush of heat blasts her back and she drops down in the back of the jeep to steady herself.

Cross's speed has them gaining more and more distance from the plume of smoke and no pursuers appear, drawing a crow of victory from her.]

Well, I think that should hold them off for a little while!

[He can see in the mirror the gush of flame and smoke covering the jeeps from behind. Steering out of the alley, Cross puts some distance between them and that alley. When he judges that they're far enough a way, he stops and soon collapses over the front of the wheel.]

That was too close.

No kidding. [She leans over the back of his seat as he stops, her expression a little worried.] Hey. You alright?

[He shakes it off as he sits back up. Turning to Artemis he nods.]

Yeah, I'm fine. Just never had to deal with numbers like that before.

[Turning the car back on, Cross looks back to her.]

I'm gonna go on ahead. You want to stick around?

Yeah, me neither.

[She gives him a sympathetic smile at that.]

You did good, though. That was some crazy driving. And sure, I'll stick around. This is a good a place for cover as any. If you don't mind the company?

[He cues in a nervous laugh. Modesty was needed for him to be likable.]

I deal with driving like that a lot back home. You know when the bad guys hijack a car you gotta learn how to keep up.

[Cross returns a grin at her; thankful she didn't want to abandon him just yet.]

Considering how well we work? I like it a lot.

[Putting his hands on the wheel, he gives a quick glance back at her.]

Hold on tight.

[and he presses back on the gas. This time taking a more moderate speed. No need for an action chase speed just yet.]

[She maintains her grip, letting him drive while her eyes sweep their surroundings for any sign of fighting or cultists or allies that need help.]

So what do you do back home?

[No signs yet, but Cross taps the side of his visor, making it examine the environment for any quick get aways for them to use.]

On a normal day or on a more adventurous one?

Hmmm...probably the adventurous one.

[He stares ahead, but Cross takes a moment to figure out how to sell his life the best way possible. He's gotta hook her. Just like a plot twist in a book. His face contorts a bit as he begins to think.]

Suppose you could call me a superhero. I go around and fight crime back home.

By yourself? [She flicks a gaze in his direction before returning her gaze to her surroundings.]

Hmmm?

[Cross wasn't sure if that was concern or just curiosity. But, if there were worries there he'd dispel them quickly.]

Not really. I drag my brother out to help me. He's got magic so we make a pretty good team.

Having someone to watch your back makes it easier, most of the time. Have you been doing it long?

Um, lets see.

[Pulling one hand off the wheel, he begins counting on his left.]

Started training around the time I was nine, actually got into it when I was twelve. So about three years of being in the field.

Wow, you started really young. [Artemis glances down at him in surprise now.]
