TERRACE Draft - Remaining Days

[She saw it coming, but the Cultists were wising up and she couldn't get off a good shot in time. She grabbed for a handhold when the jeep lurched, riding it out. But a moment later, she spotted an opportunity and reached for a particular arrow in her quiver.]

Give me a little speed, Cross. I think I can slow them down.

[She slotted one of her arrows with the explosive tip, taking aim at the jeep's front grate. With any luck, she might even get the ones behind it stuck as well.]

On it!

[He puts the jeep into full throttle. Foot completely pressed down on the gas pedal as they go speeding forward. They manage to get about 30 feet ahead and with any luck they could out run them when Artemis made her move.]

[He puts on speed and she watches the distance he gives her carefully before loosing her arrow. For a moment, nothing happens. Then an explosion burns through the hood of the vehicle behind them and their pursuers vanish in a wall of smoke. The rush of heat blasts her back and she drops down in the back of the jeep to steady herself.

Cross's speed has them gaining more and more distance from the plume of smoke and no pursuers appear, drawing a crow of victory from her.]

Well, I think that should hold them off for a little while!

[He can see in the mirror the gush of flame and smoke covering the jeeps from behind. Steering out of the alley, Cross puts some distance between them and that alley. When he judges that they're far enough a way, he stops and soon collapses over the front of the wheel.]

That was too close.

No kidding. [She leans over the back of his seat as he stops, her expression a little worried.] Hey. You alright?

[He shakes it off as he sits back up. Turning to Artemis he nods.]

Yeah, I'm fine. Just never had to deal with numbers like that before.

[Turning the car back on, Cross looks back to her.]

I'm gonna go on ahead. You want to stick around?

Yeah, me neither.

[She gives him a sympathetic smile at that.]

You did good, though. That was some crazy driving. And sure, I'll stick around. This is a good a place for cover as any. If you don't mind the company?

[He cues in a nervous laugh. Modesty was needed for him to be likable.]

I deal with driving like that a lot back home. You know when the bad guys hijack a car you gotta learn how to keep up.

[Cross returns a grin at her; thankful she didn't want to abandon him just yet.]

Considering how well we work? I like it a lot.

[Putting his hands on the wheel, he gives a quick glance back at her.]

Hold on tight.

[and he presses back on the gas. This time taking a more moderate speed. No need for an action chase speed just yet.]

[She maintains her grip, letting him drive while her eyes sweep their surroundings for any sign of fighting or cultists or allies that need help.]

So what do you do back home?

[No signs yet, but Cross taps the side of his visor, making it examine the environment for any quick get aways for them to use.]

On a normal day or on a more adventurous one?

Hmmm...probably the adventurous one.

[He stares ahead, but Cross takes a moment to figure out how to sell his life the best way possible. He's gotta hook her. Just like a plot twist in a book. His face contorts a bit as he begins to think.]

Suppose you could call me a superhero. I go around and fight crime back home.

By yourself? [She flicks a gaze in his direction before returning her gaze to her surroundings.]

Hmmm?

[Cross wasn't sure if that was concern or just curiosity. But, if there were worries there he'd dispel them quickly.]

Not really. I drag my brother out to help me. He's got magic so we make a pretty good team.

Having someone to watch your back makes it easier, most of the time. Have you been doing it long?

Um, lets see.

[Pulling one hand off the wheel, he begins counting on his left.]

Started training around the time I was nine, actually got into it when I was twelve. So about three years of being in the field.

Wow, you started really young. [Artemis glances down at him in surprise now.]

Suppose so. But, my brother was a lot younger than me when he started learning magic.

[He glances back at her.]

So, tell me. What do you do back home? 'Cause I'm pretty sure an archery club doesn't pack explosive arrows.

I have a friend that uses magic. She started pretty young, too, from what she's told me. [Then again, Artemis had been young herself but she wasn't planning on going that deeply into her background.

She grins when he glances back at her.] Not usually, no. I have some useful connections, though. It's actually pretty similar to you. I fight a lot of bad guys. I started out solo, but then I found a team to run with.

A team, huh?

[There's a twinge of jealousy right there. Working together, having friends. Yeah. He was definitely filling in the picture of Artemis's life right now. Or at the very least what he assumed it was like.]

Must be cool to have a whole team to fight the baddies. Though gotta say I'm sort of not surprised. I mean, with how you handled those guys back there.

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it's pretty rough going, too. People don't always get a long. People have their own ideas how something should be done. Sometimes it can be pretty problematic. But overall? Yeah, I'd say its pretty cool.

[She glances down and flashes him a wry smile at his comment.] Thanks. Although that was half you, though. I'd have been overrun pretty quick if you hadn't come along.

You all resolve it in the end, don't you? Even if there are problems you guys probably manage through it.

[The compliment from Artemis can't help but make him grin to himself.]

Ah, it's nothing. Heroes gotta stick together and all, right?

We do our best. [She has to laugh at that, grinning down at him.] I suppose we do.

We should probably swing by the garrison though. Refuel, get some food maybe? I could use a resupply on arrows, while I'm thinking about it.

Yeah, you're right. This jeep's about half on gas and I could use some more flash grenades. The pains of having limited ammo.

[Turning the wheel once more he begins heading towards the Garrison.]

[She snickers as she says it, dropping back down in the back of the jeep and taking advantage of the respite while it lasts.
