Birthday Parties!

What: Birthday parties!
When: July 4th (a smidge backdated)
Where: The riverside, south of the village
Summary: After several birthdays had passed, a birthday PARTY is arranged for those who missed theirs. At the river!

[With the help of Toph and Roku (and possibly others), the party had been set up south of the village. There were cakes, party tables, and seats out for everyone. It wasn't really a traditional Water Tribe party by any means, because it was meant for more than one person, after all. But it was by the river and swimming opportunities there. Sokka even set up a net and poles for volleyball. Nami and Roku knew to be there, but of course, Sokka has to get here there still...]

If that's my only choices, I'm taking cake. [He's not swimming in his clothes.]

OK! [She climbs out of the river and bends the water off to lead him over to the table.]

Sanji made two of them, so I know that those are really good. And I haven't tried the one from the bakery yet either, but I've heard that Regal is really good too.

[That was easy. He expected more of a fight about swimming. Or getting waterbended at. Something. He'll take it though. He falls into step beside her.]

I've had a few things from the bakery. Seems all right.

[Katara glances around.]

Yeah - though not all of them very well. What about you?

[Glancing around too, then he shakes his head.]

Not many at all. [Yes, he fails at being social.]

Oh. Well. That's Nami over there. There's Luffy. He's her captain. That's Sanji over there - he's their chef.

That's my friend Caesar over there, and Winry is standing over by Sokka - she works in the smithy too. Roku's over there...

[He files away the information. He'll most likely remember faces.]

I've spoken with Nami. Ran into Luffy once. [There's a bit of a parallel with Nami and Luffy there, between them and he and his lieutenant. It makes him snort, more bemused than anything. But then, he doesn't have a chef.]

Oh, so have you met the rest of their crew? There's Usopp, Brook, Zoro, and Chopper.

I think most of the crew is here... but I don't see Robin. She's with them too. I think that there's only one member of their crew who's not in Luceti.

I spoke to someone named Robin when I first arrived here. [Most of the crew, huh?] That's something, I guess. Not many from my world are here.

[She shoots him a searching look.] I guess that feels like a good thing and a bad thing, huh? I don't know how I'd be doing, if Sokka wasn't here... but at the same time... [this place is the worst town ever.]

[He shrugs. Thought you said the cake was good, Katara. Shouldn't it deserve another piece?]

Yeah, I will. It's my birthday, after all. [She reaches over and picks up a small handful of chips instead.]

I've been told that birthdays are to be celebrated. [Not that he especially cares. It's just a day, really.]

You've... been told? What do you mean? Don't you celebrate your birthday?

[He shrugs. He has no particular aversion to birthdays. No particular attachment, either.] Other people celebrate for me, for the most part. It's just another day.

Sure, it's just another day - but it marks the beginning of a whole new year! And that's something to celebrate.

My people, we only mark certain birthdays as really significant. The coming of age mark is one, and next year I'll be of marrying age - but we celebrate each year, because life is worth celebrating.

Birthdays in Soul Society are, for the most part, either chosen to commemorate a remarkable date or is simply the day that soul arrived there. Very few are actually born in Soul Society.

People are born there? But I thought it was a place for souls to go.
