[Great News, Luceti! Derek can come out and play in the sun!

Bad news...he had to turn into a medium sized, thoroughly irritated, red-tailed hawk in order to accomplish it.

He'll be perching right over here, folks. On the edge of the fountain. Or a low hanging tree branch. The roof of a house.

Or maybe even on your head when he decides he's too tired to fly anymore...

[Setzer is generally not interested in any sort of raw meat, but his new form is technically carnivorous. So don't mind him trotting over to have a look-see at you, Derek.

Also, unless Derek's actually seen death, he might be invisible, but either way, there's a bat-winged horse wandering near.]

[If the player recalls HP lore correctly, having to kill his own infected parents at the age of 17 would definitely qualify him.

...as would many, many other people he's seen die over the years, thanks to vampires.

So, yes, he does see the thestral. And when it trots over, he can't help the instinctive hiss and mantling of wings and head feathers.

Seriously, dude, don't eat him.]

[There's a snort of amusement at that, and to be honest, even if tried Derek could probably get away in the air. Setzer hasn't tried out his new wings much yet. There is, however, a horse nose coming in fairly close. He does try to stay out of strike range though.]

[Derek will hold his ground as that nose gets closer, but his feathers also settle back into place. Tentatively, once Setzer is in range, Derek will attempt to gently tap his beak against that nose in greeting.]

[He has to look down his nose quite a bit to do it, but Setzer gently returns the gesture. Hey, 'sup?]

['Sup, man. Crazy day, right?

Derek will finish smoothing his feathers and will chirp in a friendly tone.

'You can't understand me either, can you?' he says...but of course, it's in hawk tongue, so he's probably doomed.]

[Crazy day indeed. Sadly, Setzer can't understand hawk-speak, so he just snorts and tosses his head.]

[Figures. And no journal in sight for translations, either.

Still, Derek is curious...what are you, anyway? His quizzical chirps may or may not get the point across.]

[They get the point across fine. Setzer's got no earthly idea what he is though, so he simply for shrugging as best he can with his wings.]

[Derek will proceed to mince around Setzer to get a better look while he tries to figure this out. He's like a...zombie dragon horse thing....weird.]

[Setzer lets him, although he does his best to keep an eye on Derek as he moves. It never hurts to be too careful.]

[Derek is just as careful to avoid those hooves and keep from getting under the 'horse'. After a few moments though, he'll make a soft chirping noise and spread his wings, leaving the ground to try and settle, carefully, on Setzer's back to get a close look from there.]

[Robert finds himself suddenly drawn to water, as a turtle. So it's no real surprise that he goes to sit by the fountain.

However, it is definitely very fascinating to see a red-tailed hawk perched on it. So after a moment to adjust his entirely-unnecessary glasses, he looks up and studies said hawk.]

Buteo jamaicensis... Fascinating. I haven't seen any in Luceti before. [Half to himself:] Beautiful raptors, though.

[Derek will regard this definitely-not-one-of-the-brothers turtle as he's studied in turn. He'll also ruffle his feathers and preen himself a little at the compliment, still watching Robert carefully as he does so.]

... The fact that there are none of such hawks normally in Luceti, and the fact that so many people have had their species changed, leads me to conclude that you are also likely a villager in another form. [Robert looks up at the hawk at this, probably wanting confirmation of some kind.]

[Derek will click and bob his head. Got it in one.

...He actually says that, but unless Robert understands hawk, all he'll probably hear is a series of squawks, chirps and squeaks.]

[Robert doesn't hear it, yet, no.

But experience with Ranka-as-a-larva means that he doesn't need to wait for confirmation this time. He opens the journal and switches it to voice function, then holds it close to the raptor, knowing that it's going to be hard for something with talons to use the journal.]

The journal acts as a translator, so hopefully I will be able to hear you speak. It worked in another case.

At any rate, I am Professor Robert Alexander Hastings, if you recognize that name. I am... normally a human, but the Malnosso apparently have a sense of irony.

[Fortunately, Albert has already introduced Derek to this idea, so he catches on immediately and sidles closer to the book. NO reason to 'shout', after all.]

[Here, Derek. Have a huge, kinda nerdy - even for a turtle - shy smile. It spreads across Robert's beak almost without his consent.]

How is it that you know? Did one of the Hamatos tell you? [Because now Robert's wondering how many people know. ~~It might be bad if it gets to Karai.~~]
