[Clark's walking through the plaza minding his own business when he feels that telepathic touch on his mind.

His first reaction is to use every trick he's learned to deal with telepaths trying to invade his mind. He focuses, guards his thoughts, and tries his best not to let anything sensitive slip by.

Then he actually "hears" what the telepath is saying.
