Summary: Sokka and Suki go on a boat ride. SOKKA HAS A SECRET SURPRISE FOR HER. What could it be?

[This was it. Sokka had been working up the nerve and going through all the preparations for this. The Big Day. Do or die. Either he rises or falls. He'd get to find out the answer to a question that would determine the REST OF HIS LIFE.

... preparing for Black Sun was easier than this.

Either way, he'd let him work crew know he was going to be off, blown off school, informed Katara and the others he would not be back for dinner (or at all that night) and practiced his lines in front of an utterly disinterested Hawky. And then on a slightly less apathetic Momo.

Sunset was still about an hour off and Sokka was waiting by the river with the black canoe, Maza. He had wisely chosen not to take the one named Yue. Although now he was realizing he hadn't taken consideration of the moon cycle. Crap! What if this was a Full Moon? How could he manage to do something like this if he was feeling guilty about Yue!? Ugh... he'll just have to do the deed during sunset, rather than down at the lake. To think, he's already bungling things up this early.

Well, there's nothing for it now. He told Suki to meet him by the river bank. It was just a matter of her showing up now.]

[His sudden seriousness takes her by surprise, and she pauses before answering, puzzled.]

You don't have to ask me about asking, Sokka. You know that.

Well, right, I know. It's just... you know, us? We've come a long way. More than where we were back home. And... do you think what we have here matters? I mean, even if we both go home and forget it all, right now it still matters, right?

I don't see why it wouldn't matter... if we go home and forget, that would be terrible, but the progress we've made here means that we can be just as close back home, too. It's still important, and I wouldn't trade it for anything, even if we might not remember it.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I'm glad you feel that way, because there's something else I want to ask you.

[She blinks curiously at that, and shifts a bit closer, waiting for him. What's so important...?]

[Okay he's just going to pull out the necklace and... oh crap, his pocket is too tight while sitting down. It... just... won't... come out.]

Just a second, I need to um-

[Argh! Okay, maybe if he just stands up a little.]

[He slowly slides up, even as the boat begins to rock unsteadily. He reaches into his pocket again, but now it's all bunched up and these pants really aren't his size anymore. Tug, tug, tug. AHA HE'S GOT IT.]

Suki, I want to ask if you- whoa, whoa, whoa!

[He tried to kneel down too fast and the canoe rocks unsteadily and he does his best to balance it out, but nope. It's not enough, the boat is getting flipped over.]

[Splish.]

[Sokka will soon resurface, necklace still in hand, reaching out to find and cling to the canoe. That necklace is quite very obviously still in his hand, held in open view on the side of the canoe.]

[Hold that thought, Sokka, Suki is busy spluttering and clinging to the canoe. THAT IS NOT WHAT SHE HAD BEEN EXPECTING, THANK YOU.]

[And just what was so important that he had to flip the canoe for it!? Her dress is wasted now, and their stuff is everywhere, and...!!]

[....Wait... wait... distracted. Isn't that Katara's necklace?]

Sokka... What's that?

[He's about to apologize when she suddenly points out the necklace. He eyes it... then her, then back to it. Oh jeez, he can't just hide it now. And he can't just give it to her and not tell her what it's for.

Is this really how he's going to do this? Wading in the water while clinging to a canoe? It... well, that's what it looks like. He swallows hard and flips the canoe right side up, so he can at least wrap an elbow around it. Fortunately the camping gear is still strapped to the bottom, even if a lot of the other stuff is now floating away. Not that is the most important thing at the moment.

Okay, he positions himself towards her and locks eyes with her, to study her reaction and well... maybe communicate his intent with his own. His tone is a bit uneasy, nervous, and yet mixed with determination. He's all over the place.]

In the Water Tribe, we have a tradition. When a guy finds the woman he wants to be with for the rest of his life, he carves.... this. [He holds the necklace out with his free hand, turning the pendant to her so she can see it.] An engagement necklace.

[He rubs away some of the wetness away with his thumb, glancing down at the necklace for a moment before turning his gaze back to her.] I... wanted this to be different. But.

[Deep breath.]

Will you take it? Become my, er, my betrothed? And someday marry me?

[For a long moment, Suki does nothing except stare as he explains. Is he- did he just- does that mean-]

[...........Wow. He did.]

[HE REALLY DID. OH GOSH SOKKA JUST ASKED HER TO MARRY HIM.

INTERNAL KEYSMASH FOREVER.]

[...Or rather, another handful of moments- just long enough to snap out of it and launch herself at him. Hope your grip on the boat is good, Sokka, because your girlfriend is going to cling for dear life.]

Sokka, of course I will...!

[He smiles wide to catch her and embrace and kiss but gravity decides that's too romantic and Sokka goes under instead...

And reemerges on the other side of the boat, clinging to it for dear life, the necklace still in a vice grip.]

M-maybe we should get on land first.

[She can't even be embarrassed for that, she's so tickled. He asked her to marry him! After everything they've been through, he still- they're really going to- and he made that for her and- ...oh!]

Yeah... you're right. [That's not stopping her from remaining good and close to him. She does kick her feet to try and guide the boat towards shore, though- she wants to thank him properly and see that necklace.]

[It's a small river, so before long they'll be dragging the canoe to shore. Despite being soaked to the bone, Sokka tries to forget what just happened and turns to her holding out the necklace.]

Here, I'll um, help you put it on.

Hang on- [Suki leans in to get a better look at it first, brushing her fingers over the pendant.] Oh Sokka, it's beautiful... you made this?

[Don't act so surprised! (Even if it should be.)]

Well I kind of went through a few prototypes first... [He stopped counting around thirty-five.]

Even so, that's amazing... [She lifts her chin eagerly to give him some room to put the necklace on her, sliding her hair out of the way for him.]

[Well he can't mess THIS up. He slides it around her neck and then fastens it in the back. The pendant remains in his hand for just a bit before he lets it fall to her skin, at which point he admires how good it looks on her, then raises his eyes to meet hers.]

So... you're me betrothed. And I'm your betrothed. That means from now on, there can't be anyone else. [...] You know, barring crazy experiments. [Ya know, he probably could've left that out.] But um, I love you, Suki.
