What: Toph's Birthday Party!

Where: House 56
Summary: It's Toph's 13th birthday! Pretty much anything goes here. Fun, chatting, games, food--whatever! What to run a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey? Go for it! Want to crash the party? Go for it!
Rating: PG-ish, sure.

That's right, Toph is now officially a teenager. And this party? Despite the Malnosso and the draft and the whole fact that they were stuck in Luceti in the first place? It was gonna be awesome. She had already decided that. Even if some random morons showed up.

Everything was pretty much set behind the house; Toph even provided the chairs and tables herself through her earthbending. But there are some folding chairs set out as well for those who mind a more comfortable seat. There is also an array of party foods, with excesses of chips, popcorn, and soda.

So the party is ready to roll, and so is the birthday girl. Let's get it started.

Yeah, guess so.

[And because she can't hold off asking any longer:]

So, you gonna give me my present, or what?

Oh, yeah. One second.

[He slips away to his room and comes back with a box that... well, is just a box. Toph is blind and Sokka is pretty pragmatic about that kind of thing, except when he forgets she is. For a lack of other things he thought she would like that he could make, he settled for something he found and had kept for himself for nearly a year now. It's a chess set. The pieces are stone, but he replaced the old board with a stone slab that he painted and carved dividers into himself.]

It's not the best present, sure, but... happy birthday anyway.

[Toph takes the box in her hands and weighs it carefully--well, it felt like...a game. A game with stones, which was pretty cool, but...]

Um, this is swell, Sokka, but what is it?

It's called Chess. A kind of strategy game, sort of like Pai Sho, but its really popular on other worlds. Someone taught me to play it about a year ago. And... well, I figured you might like it or something.

[The sentiment is mostly so that the two of them can play it together. They don't get an excuse to just hang out nearly enough.]

It's not hard to learn. I can show you how to play.

[Well, she's skeptical, but...

Buddy time with Sokka would be too bad.]

Okay, sure. Just don't be surprised when I kick your butt!

Sure. Good luck with that. I've had a year to get good at it. And I am the plan guy.

[Except for the bit where he hasn't really found anyone he can consistently play against. That's a bummer.]

We'll see about that! You've just never had the privilege of playing against me before. Just wait until the great Toph Bei Fong masters chess!

I'll be waiting in suspense until then.

Well, you gotta teach it to me, first.

What, like now?

[She shrugs.]

Sure. Why not? You got something better to do?

... well, when you put it like that, not really.

[Okay, time to head over to the couch and he'll clear a space off on the table there. He'll start setting up the board, naming off each piece and demonstrating how they move, complete with explanations. The queen will get explained last, because he figures she'll like that bit, seeing as how it's the best piece to use.]

[Huzzah! This game better not be lame. Really, really.

And...that's...a lot of different stone dudes doing a lot of different things. Still, she can keep track, even if she has her doubts if this will actually be fun.]

Okay, okay. And how do you win?

[Maybe he should have picked out checkers... or Candyland.

He taps the king.]

Your king has to be taken. Or at least, if you can't make any move to keep your king out of danger, then you've lost. That's checkmate.

[Candyland would only be sufficient were real candy involved.]

So that's the only dude you really need to worry about killing, right?

... not exactly. If you try to go for him right away, you'll just get your butt kicked. You've gotta take down his army before you can take down the king.

[It's like the exact opposite of how they took on the Fire Lord!]

[She nods.]

Okay, got it. So you kinda wanna make him as vulnerable as possible.

Yeah, exactly. Wear down his defenses, that kind of thing.

Like when we invaded the Fire Nation! [You know, minus the tanks and subs and solar eclipse.] Okay, I gotcha. I'm ready to give it a shot.

Alright, well, it's your birthday. You have the first move. [He sits back and waits to see what she'll do.]

Okay. Here goes nothing.

[She puts a hand on the side of the board, and the leftmost pawn creeps two spaces forward.]

[... he really should have expected that. He quickly gets over that and moves one of his own pawns, in front of the right bishop, a single space forward.]

[So...maybe she should think about building a kind of fence, right? Hey, it was worth a try. So she moves the pawn right next to the first one she moved one space forward.

...Yeah, strategy is gonna take awhile to figure out here.]

[He's sort of seeing what she's doing. So a few moves in, he'll demonstrate that's a bad idea by having the oddly moving knight removing one of her pawns, while remaining untouchable for now.]

Hey! [Welp, now her strategy is totally botched. So she'll try a new strategy.

Which is get as many dudes as far across the board as possible. Sure, she loses a lot of those dudes in the process, but she has made it far with a few of them!]
