Summary: What's a summer without going on a trip to the beach at least once?
Rating: PG13+? Depends, really.

[When one enters the beach, if they're the type of people to make beelines for food as soon as they step into a party, they'll notice that there are a few tables set up with a bunch of snacks laid about, along with a giant cooler residing at the end of the table. There's a barbecue going on too, though it'll be self-serve if you're hungry.]

[Otherwise, there's a bunch of sporting equipment laying about. A Frisbee, a few volleyball nets... Whatever you'd like to be there! Don't forget, there's always swimming in the ocean, too.]

I'm fine. Barely felt it. [And now that that question is out of the water, Walter reaches out to touch the water that Katara is standing on. ...Hope that doesn't do anything weird.]

[Nothing untoward should happen when he touches the water. It's simply 'solid.' It may feel a bit like plastic or glass. She calls it 'hard water,' and it takes a ridiculous amount of skill and a constant thrum of effort to maintain it, since unlike ice or mist it's not the natural state of water to be in. But she doesn't mind. It's a great way to build up bending stamina, even if it makes surfing twice as exhausting an activity.]

[...eyebrow at the investigation going on down by her feet, but she doesn't say anything. She supposes wanting to touch the water is a fair enough trade for splashing the guy.]

[He's going to inspect the water for a moment longer before coming to a conclusion.] This isn't a skill from the Filial spirits, is it? [Why yes, he's going to have a casual conversation all the way out here, like being this far from the shore is nothing out of the norm at all.]

[She shakes her head.] No, although Sona can enhance it once I bend it. She thinks it's 'interesting but unnatural.'

[Katara doesn't think much of it, really. Although she is eyeing him a little oddly. Is he still wearing a shirt? That's a little... huh.]

[It's not just a shirt, but a long-sleeved one. The water may obscure it, but he's also wearing pants and boots.]

Interesting but unnatural. That sounds about right. [He was still reestablishing his connections with the Filial spirits, but Sona was definitely the easiest to communicate with.] You "bend" it? The water?

[Yeah, that's just... really odd. Although not entirely unfamiliar, and Katara is nudging at the part of her brain which makes this seem like it's something that she should remember.]

That's right. I'm a waterbender. [One who is starting to find standing up on the surface level of the water and communicating to some guy whose head is surface level in the water a little awkward. She skillfully maneuvers to sit down on the board instead, bracing her hands behind her to balance it. There. That should take care of that.]

My name's Katara. What's yours?

[Waterbender. Something about that term sounds ... yes, unnatural. And potentially dangerous.

...But she's also adjusting to sit down on her unnatural water. To talk to him. So he decides it can't hurt to at least answer.]

Walter. I arrived this most recent cycle.

Do you always go swimming with all your clothes on?

[Because, clearly, this is the most important question.]

Is that odd? [He sure saw nothing wrong with it.]

[Um. Yeah.]

Well, I've never seen anyone do it before. At least, not on purpose.

It's not unusual where I'm from. [He says this in the broadest sense that he can, since he's seen swimming Orerines. ...Not in the most flattering of ways, but hey. They were swimming with their clothes on, too.]

Why would you need to expose yourself to go swimming?

It's not about exposing yourself, it's to enable you to swim more effectively. If you go in the water with your clothes on they get waterlogged and can drag you down. Plus, it feels uncomfortable. And when you're done swimming, and you want to dry off not everyone has the option of bending the water away. That's why I like these suits - they're far more water repellent than anything we were able to make in the South Pole.

Is it? [It's a more ... polite response than anything, because he doesn't really agree with anything that Katara just said.] I suppose you people would need all the help you could get when it comes to swimming.

What do you mean?

People who haven't been swimming their entire lives. [What was it that Fenimore would chide him about? Being discreet? We'll see how long that lasts.]

I've been swimming since I could crawl.

[Slight exaggeration here, but when you are living right next to the ocean, even if it is in the South Pole, you learn to swim almost at the same time as you learn to walk.

...although. Yeah. She hardly wore a bikini during those lessons. Brrr.]

It's just a matter dressing appropriately to suit a task. [Frown, frown, shrug.] But it's not really a big deal. I mean, if you like your clothes getting soaking wet, there's nothing really wrong with that.

[It's weird, but there are weirder things in Luceti and Katara doesn't really feel like arguing about it when she could get back to surfing.]

The only problem with that would be if my clothes were soaking wet. [Did that even make sense?] But they're not.

[...They probably just had that whole tangent for no reason at all.]

[There is no way your clothes aren't wet. She is starting to think you might not be quite right in the head.]

[It seems we have a failure with communication here. Not that that occurred to Walter at any point.]

[...Oh, whatever. Why the hell was he doing all this talking when he could just show what he was talking about?

Below the surface, a dark shadow rapidly forms. Walter swims backwards a little, and then gets a firm grip on the dark 'bubble' that he is now sitting on.

There are definitely other ways to show the fact that his clothes aren't soaked, but this was just a little dramatic.]

[Walter brushes on the water on his clothes; the fabric seems untouched, with the water slipping off of his clothes easily.

He seems unfazed by her surprise. ...Well, no. It's more like he's gauging her reaction.]

It's my teriques. Not a thing.

What's a teriques? [She shifts a little closer. Her stance is still loose and easy, but it would take less than a second for her to snap to attention - she's not feeling threatened, though. He's not attacking her. So she's just curious.] Can I touch it?
