Summary: Brigade party! There's food! There's lights! There's music! There's fireworks!

There were lights! Autumn-appropriate decorations! There were tables of food (though very little of it is vegetarian friendly)! There was even a stage for music and entertainment! Still waiting was the fireworks to take place at midnight, but otherwise things were set up to more or less respectable Brigade standards. Maybe Haruhi hadn't done it herself, but it was done well enough, thanks to the efforts of being coordinated by Mikage.

The stage was left open for anyone to perform that wanted to. The karaoke machine had been dragged outside for people to sing along to, regardless of talent, or otherwise just to play music when no one was on stage. Naturally inside the Rec Center itself is a variety of pool tables, foosball, air hockey, and a TV with some video games. Just enough to keep things a little fun. If only there was a pool.

[Damn. He guessed as much, but it was worth a shot. Dwelling on it isn't going to help anyone, so it's time for a subject change, stat.]

What're you doing here, anyway? Going to the party?

Uhhh...I guess I am.

[He doesn't sound very sure about it, honestly.] I just heard noise outside and came over to see what was going on. And, well...then I stayed. What about you?

My house is right there. [He gestures back towards #23.] The noise kind of carries, so it's hard to ignore.

[dragoneer]

Yeah. I know what you mean.

[Yup. That pretty much sums it up.]

Uh--so! So. Uhh...we could, um...eat. Food. Or something.

[automailed]

So long as nobody's expecting me to sing, fine by me. [His gaze drifts towards the noisy karaoke machine. Yyyeaaaaah no, let's avoid that area. Food sounds like the safest bet.]

I saw these at the fair last week. They still haunt me.

[dragoneer]

Yeah, I think--yeah. [Wholeheartedly agreed. Hiccup heads towards the food tables, and eyes the selection of goodies. He picks up one of these and gives it a very apprehensive look.]

Uhh...do you know what this is?

oh god my gut hurts just looking at it

It doesn't look familiar... are you gonna try it?

[Because the sight of it is kind of horrifying. Wow. Everything about it looks murderously unhealthy.]

It was bizarre. So bizarre.

[dragoneer]

Well, I...[The viking in him says YES, OF COURSE, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR YOU COWARD. But the logical thinker in him has serious doubts about eating...what ever it is.]

Iiiii'm not sure. Are you going to have something?

And yet I'm kind of tempted to...

If I am, it's not going to be that. [He shifts over a bit to snag a couple of cookies instead, using the sling as a makeshift plate. Yep, it's actually good for something now!] I'd rather eat something I can identify.

[dragoneer]

...Yeah. That's probably the safest bet.

[Still, as he picks up his own plate, he puts the strange, somewhat disturbing concoction on it. Maybe he'll give it a try. Maybe.]

How's your arm, anyway?

[automailed]

Still broken. [He gives his fingers a little wiggle to demonstrate his lack of overall movement.] Apparently I broke most of the bones in the arm, so it's kind of risky to use magic to heal it all. I'm supposed to wait a month or so before I try to get it fixed up.

[He's watching Hiccup with a mixture of curiosity and morbid concern. Is he seriously going to eat that thing?]

[dragoneer]

...Does it, you know...hurt? [Because he really has no idea, in this case. Waiting around for a month for any healing would drive him crazy.

He follows his gaze to the brown fried thing.] I might have a bite. Just to see. Maybe it's delicious.

A little, but it doesn't really bother me. I've had worse.

[Losing two limbs? Check. Automail surgery? Double-check. A few broken bones is a walk in the park.

He is kind of intrigued about Hiccup trying the bizarro food, so he watches to see how it goes.]

[dragoneer]

[Hiccup nods. Well, as long as it isn't driving him crazy...]

Okay. Here goes...nothing.

[So tentatively, Hiccup takes a bite of the deep-fried bacon Twinkie. It tastes exactly like you might expect.]

[That... looks so gross. Edward makes a face, leaning back. Sure, it smells like bacon, but the combination...]

...Well?

[dragoneer]

[...Give him a moment. This is a lot to take in. Hiccup swallows and makes a face like he's just swallowed a cactus.]

It's...yeah, pretty terrible.

[automailed]

Okay, that cements it- I don't be trying that. [He'll be over here eating the cookies and being relieved that he's less adventurous about food. That squishy white stuff could be foamed milk or something horrifying like that.]

[dragoneer]

[Hiccup just puts the offending food on the corner of his plate and eats some potato chips instead. Which is still pretty adventurous for him.]

Sooo...um. Anything else new?

[Ohgod small talk HIS CURSE]

Uh... I'm out of the hospital, I guess that's new. [SHUFFLE SHUFFLE. Suddenly the cookie is very interesting.] And a few people showed up from my world, too, so it's gotten kind of busy around here.

[dragoneer]

[One the share, unfortunately.]

Oh, yeah? Friends of yours? Or...

[You know, bad guys.]

One is, yeah. Ling. The other... [Oh, right, different worlds. Hmm.] Do you have anything like a military where you're from?

[dragoneer]

[The word is familiar, if only from the context of the draft.]

Well--sort of, I think. All vikings are expected to be warriors, so I think there are some similarities.

Probably close enough. I'm in the military back in my world, and the guy who just arrived is my commanding officer.

[dragoneer]

So...he's kind of like your chief? I mean, in my tribe, the chief is the one who's in charge of all the warriors.

[Which would be his dad. Yup.]

Not exactly. There's different levels of authority in a military- everybody gets different ranks. My rank's supposed to be major, and his is colonel, which is above mine. But there's still ranks above his, like brigadier-general, major-general, lieutenant-general, and full general, right up to the leader of the country, the Fuhrer president.

[Who is secretly an immortal, ridiculously powerful homunculus, but that's another story.]
